  • Ferrari, Red Bull and Mercedes have all had their moments but none has been a consistent challenger, as McLaren鈥檚 58-point constructors鈥 championship lead shows
  • Jeddah hosts the fifth race in six weeks in a hectic start to the season, which stays at a record 24 races

JEDDAH: Ahead of Sunday鈥檚 黑料社区n Grand Prix, this Formula 1 season is looking like McLaren vs. McLaren. Still, defending champion Max Verstappen of Red Bull says he hasn鈥檛 lost hope.
McLaren drivers Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri are the only ones to consistently have the pace through the first four rounds of the championship.
Norris has a three-point lead but admits he isn鈥檛 at his best 鈥 though he had the fastest time of the day in practice on Friday 鈥 while Piastri has momentum after winning in Bahrain last week.
Ferrari, Red Bull and Mercedes have all had their moments but none has been a consistent challenger, as McLaren鈥檚 58-point constructors鈥 championship lead shows.
Friday practice
Norris went fastest in the second practice session, while Yuki Tsunoda crashed to continue his difficult start with Red Bull.

Norris was .163 seconds faster than Piastri in the second session, which was run under floodlights and more representative of race conditions than the hotter daytime session. Verstappen complained earlier in the day of his car feeling 鈥渧ery loose鈥 in high-speed corners but ended Friday third fastest, .280 off Norris.
In his third race weekend with Red Bull since replacing Liam Lawson, Tsunoda clipped the wall on the inside of a corner and slid into the barrier on the other side, requiring a red flag.
Alpine鈥檚 Pierre Gasly was the surprise leader in the first session, just .007 of a second faster than Norris. Charles Leclerc of Ferrari was .07 off Gasly in third and Piastri fourth, barely a tenth of a second off the pace. Lewis Hamilton was eighth in the other Ferrari. Verstappen was ninth.
Verstappen鈥檚 hope
Verstappen is the only non-McLaren driver to win a grand prix this season, but in Bahrain he was struggling so much that Red Bull motorsport adviser Helmut Marko said he was concerned the Dutch star might reconsider his future.
Verstappen said this week he wasn鈥檛 considering the championship picture this early in the season.
鈥淚鈥檓 not thinking about that. I just go race by race,鈥 he said. 鈥淎t the moment we are not the quickest. So then naturally it鈥檚 very tough to fight for a championship, but it鈥檚 still a very long road ... I鈥檓 hopeful that we can still improve things.鈥
Two-time champion Fernando Alonso dampened speculation Verstappen could seek to join his Aston Martin team after Red Bull car designer Adrian Newey made that move last year.
Asked if he鈥檇 welcome being Verstappen鈥檚 teammate, Alonso said Thursday: 鈥淵es, but it鈥檚 unlikely to happen. Very unlikely.鈥
Alonso鈥檚 current teammate is Lance Stroll, son of team owner Lawrence Stroll.
Busy schedule
Jeddah hosts the fifth race in six weeks in a hectic start to the season, which stays at a record 24 races. There鈥檚 a little respite after 黑料社区, with two weeks till the next event in Miami.
鈥淚t鈥檚 on the upper end of the limit. It feels like race 10 already,鈥 said Williams driver Alex Albon, adding it鈥檚 especially tough on mechanics and other crew members.
鈥淎s drivers, we travel better than everyone else in the paddock. We stay in better hotels than everyone else in the paddock 鈥 it鈥檚 just a function of being in a privileged position. With mechanics ... these are people with families. These are the people that really struggle.鈥
The rookies are still enjoying their first taste of F1, though.
鈥淚t鈥檚 just the beginning of my career, so I just want to keep racing and keep driving,鈥 Sauber鈥檚 Gabriel Bortoleto said. 鈥淚鈥檓 learning new things every single weekend, so for me, if I could have another race next weekend, I would be very happy as well.鈥

Amnesty International urges FIFA and UEFA to suspend Israel from international football
  • Amnesty International says the Israeli Football Association violates international law by providing economic opportunities to settlers鈥 football clubs in West Bank
  • Suspending the IFA would mean that Israeli national and club teams would be barred from participating in international competitions

LONDON: Amnesty International urged FIFA and the Union of European Football Associations to suspend the Israeli Football Association until the latter excludes settlers鈥 clubs in the occupied West Bank from competing in the Israeli leagues.

Agnes Callamard, the secretary-general of Amnesty International, called on Wednesday for the suspension of the IFA as Israeli forces 鈥渃ontinue to perpetrate genocide against Palestinians in the Gaza Strip鈥 since late 2023.

The Israeli national team is currently competing in the European qualifiers against Norway and Italy for the 2026 World Cup, which will be held in Canada, Mexico, and the US next summer. Additionally, the Israeli club Maccabi Tel Aviv is participating in the Europa League.

UN officials and figures from the football world have increased pressure in September on FIFA and UEFA to suspend Israel from international football tournaments, describing it 鈥渁s a necessary response to address the ongoing genocide in the occupied Palestinian territory.鈥

This week, UEFA has postponed a vote on banning Israel from European football following US President Donald Trump鈥檚 plan to address the ongoing war in Gaza.

鈥淥ver 800 athletes, players and sports officials are among the more than 65,000 people Israeli forces have killed in a deliberate campaign of wholesale devastation, forced displacement and starvation of civilians (in Gaza),鈥 Callamard wrote in a letter addressed to Gianni Infantino, the president of FIFA, and Aleksander Ceferin, the president of UEFA.

Amnesty International said that there are six football clubs based in settlements in the West Bank that play in the Israeli leagues. These include two clubs in Ariel settlement, Beitar Givat Zeev Shabi, Beitar Maaleh Adomim, Hapoel Oranit, and Hapoel Jordan Valley, according to a report by Human Rights Watch.

Israeli settlements in the West Bank are deemed illegal under international law following its military occupation of the territory in 1967. Last month, Israel failed to comply with a UN General Assembly resolution to withdraw from the area within 12 months, as instructed by the International Court of Justice, which ruled that Israel鈥檚 presence there is 鈥渦nlawful.鈥

鈥淎t the same time, Israel is brutally expanding its illegal settlements and legitimizing illegal outposts in the West Bank as part of its unlawful occupation of Palestinian Territory. It is nothing short of a disgrace that the IFA is still allowing clubs from these settlements to keep playing in its leagues, after multiple warnings for more than a decade,鈥 Callamard wrote.

Amnesty International said that settlers鈥 football clubs competing in Israeli leagues violate international law and FIFA鈥檚 rules, which state: 鈥淢ember associations and their clubs may not play on the territory of another member association without the latter鈥檚 approval.鈥

Suspending the IFA would mean that Israeli national and club teams would be barred from participating in international competitions until it complies with international law and FIFA statutes, according to Amnesty International. The IFA would also lose its membership and voting rights, and neither FIFA nor UEFA would provide any funding.

鈥淭here should be no place in football, or indeed in any sport, for clubs based in illegal settlements in the Occupied Palestinian Territory,鈥 Callamard added.

鈥淭he IFA is shamelessly contributing to Israel鈥檚 violations of international law by providing sporting and economic opportunities that help sustain these illegal settlements.鈥

The Palestinian Football Association filed a formal complaint to FIFA in March 2024 about Israeli violations and has accused FIFA of failing to take action against these violations.

Israeli attacks on Gaza have devastated the football infrastructure and sports facilities, resulting in the deaths of hundreds of athletes, including 69 who participated in Olympic sports.

In August, the football community mourned the loss of Suleiman Al-Obeid, 41, who was killed during an Israeli attack on people waiting for humanitarian aid. Al-Obeid earned the nickname 鈥渢he Palestinian Pele鈥 due to his impressive career, in which he scored over 100 goals.

FIFA World Cup 2026 tickets go on sale amid high demand and many uncertainties
  • The buyers will be those who were selected, out of 4.5 million applicants in a lottery that took place last month
  • Ticket prices will range initially from $60 for group-stage matches to $6,730 for the final

MIAMI: Not even half of the spots in the 48-team field have been claimed. The schedule of matches won鈥檛 be finalized until December. And other than host nations US, Canada and Mexico, nobody has any idea where or when they鈥檒l be playing.
Millions of football fans worldwide evidently don鈥檛 seem to mind any of those points.
Tickets to next year鈥檚 FIFA World Cup officially go on sale Wednesday. The buyers will be those who were selected, out of 4.5 million applicants in a lottery that took place last month, to have the first formal chance to purchase tickets over the next few days. FIFA said lottery winners have been, or will soon be, informed by email.
There are unique questions for consumers heading into the tournament, particularly about how they鈥檒l get visas, if necessary, to visit the US as the country cracks down on immigration. There are also more traditional concerns such as who, when and where 鈥 and none of those will be answered until the draw on Dec. 5. FIFA knows many fans won鈥檛 fret about those answers; they鈥檒l just want tickets now and will figure out the rest later.
鈥淭hese are not only outstanding figures, but also a strong statement,鈥 FIFA President Gianni Infantino said on social media, reacting to the 4.5 million applicants for a spot in the purchase window that opened Wednesday. 鈥淭he whole world wants to be part of the FIFA World Cup 26, the biggest, most inclusive and most exciting event ever. From Canada, Mexico and the United States, to countries big and small across every continent, fans are proving once again passion for football truly unites.鈥
In divided times, the notion of football being something that 鈥渢ruly unites鈥 will be put to the test.
Here are some things to know as tickets go on sale.
What鈥檚 for sale?
Fans can purchase seats in one of four categories; Category 1 is the best seats, Category 4 is somewhere around the tops of stadiums. Ticket prices will range initially from $60 for group-stage matches to $6,730 for the final but could 鈥 and almost certainly will 鈥 change as football鈥檚 biggest event utilizes dynamic pricing for the first time.
There are other ways to get tickets other than shelling out big bucks. American Airlines announced last month that its AAdvantage loyalty program members can redeem miles for World Cup tickets, starting Oct. 13 for executive platinum and concierge key members, then Oct. 14 for platinum pro, platinum and gold members, followed on Oct. 15 by all members.
And starting Thursday, some Verizon customers will have access to free World Cup tickets and other perks. The telecommunications giant is a World Cup sponsor and will simply start dropping free ticket chances to its customers through its app.
鈥淔or me, there are few things as exciting as experiencing football live, whether that鈥檚 on or o铿 the pitch, and so I am proud to partner with Verizon to celebrate their plans to give fans unprecedented access to the tournament,鈥 said football icon David Beckham, part of Verizon鈥檚 promotion for the World Cup.
Who鈥檚 in?
The US, Mexico and Canada all automatically qualified as host nations. Also in so far: defending champion Argentina, Japan, New Zealand, Iran, Uzbekistan, Jordan, South Korea, Brazil, Australia, Ecuador, Uruguay, Tunisia, Colombia, Paraguay and Morocco.
That leaves 30 spots still unclaimed.
FIFA said fans from 216 countries and territories applied to be part of the first ticket lottery. The top three nations of interest, to no surprise, were the hosts: the US, Mexico and Canada, in that order. The rest of the top 10, also in order of application totals: Germany, England, Brazil, Argentina, Colombia, Spain and Italy.
Nobody has said how many tickets FIFA plans to sell in this first window. Availability won鈥檛 be depleted; based on the listed stadium attendance figures, there are roughly 7.1 million seats to fill for the 104 matches around 16 North American venues, though it鈥檚 unknown how many of those seats will be available for sale to the public.
Will visitors travel to the US?
There is an immigration crackdown unfolding across the US, which could dampen overseas interest in traveling to the country. US tourism officials have already noted a drop in overseas visitors this year and even organizers in some US host cities have acknowledged that political dynamics may have an impact on attendance.
Adding to some of the uncertainty, President Donald Trump, who has a close relationship with Infantino, has suggested that the host cities could be changed if he wants to move some events away from places his administration considers unsafe.
The US cities that are scheduled to host are East Rutherford, New Jersey; Inglewood, California; Foxborough, Massachusetts; Houston; Arlington, Texas; Atlanta; Seattle; Santa Clara, California; Philadelphia; Kansas City, Missouri and Miami Gardens, Florida.
鈥淚f any city we think is going to be even a little bit dangerous for the World Cup 鈥 we won鈥檛 allow it to go there,鈥 Trump said last week. 鈥淲e鈥檒l move it around a little bit. But I hope that鈥檚 not going to happen.鈥
The State Department says that 鈥渢he safety and security of the United States鈥 along with 鈥淲orld Cup matches, athletes, fans, and venues鈥 are the top priorities with regard to its role in the World Cup process. It also suggests that travelers who need a visa should start applying now, and officials have said the US is trying 鈥渢o ensure an efficient, smooth, and effective visa process.鈥
What鈥檚 next?
A second phase, called an early ticket draw, likely will run from Oct. 27-31, with purchase timeslots from mid-November to early December. A third phase, termed a random selection draw, will start after the final draw of teams on Dec. 5 determines the World Cup schedule.
Tickets will also be available closer to the tournament 鈥渙n a first-come, first-served basis.鈥 FIFA also said it will start an official resale platform.
Some tickets have already been snagged; hospitality packages have been sold since May.
鈥淭he world will come together in North America,鈥 Infantino promised, 鈥渓ike never before.鈥
The tournament runs from June 11 through July 19.

鈥榃hole country behind us鈥: Herve Renard and 黑料社区 united in World Cup convictions

鈥榃hole country behind us鈥: Herve Renard and 黑料社区 united in World Cup convictions
  • The French coach spoke to Arab News about the vital upcoming Asian Qualifiers, the famous 2022 World Cup win over Argentina and starring in the new 鈥榊ou Got This鈥 campaign

RIYADH: A video for a newly launched campaign, 鈥淵ou Got This,鈥 featuring Saudi national team head coach Herve Renard, begins with a solitary figure running 鈥 at first alone, then gradually joined by others, until the crowd itself carries the Frenchman forward.

It is not only a metaphor for Renard鈥檚 philosophy, but also an apt reflection of his training methods and the unity he believes is key to 黑料社区鈥檚 dream of returning to the World Cup. In October, his team will take on Indonesia and Iraq in the fourth round of AFC Qualifiers, top the three-team Group B, and head to the tournament co-hosted by the US, Canada and Mexico next summer.

鈥淚t鈥檚 very good support,鈥 Renard told Arab News at the launch of the Adidas campaign. 鈥淚 think (the whole) country will be behind us. We know what they are expecting from us, but we are also expecting from them to support us. From the first gun to the last one. And together, we have to do it.鈥

It鈥檚 a powerful call to arms, and hearts. For Renard, running is more than fitness; it鈥檚 his thinking space, his strategy room, and his sanctuary.

鈥淚f I don鈥檛 run, I鈥檓 not feeling comfortable,鈥 he said, explaining how his solitary runs are moments of mental preparation. 鈥淚 never use music when I鈥檓 running. I鈥檓 always thinking about what I have to say, what maybe I didn鈥檛 do well before, what I have to improve, or what I will say to the players. Always to anticipate what鈥檚 coming.鈥

Arab News journalist Aisha Fareed with Herv茅 Renard during an exclusive interview. (AN Photo / Abdulrahman bin Shalhoub)

Renard is, in essence, consistently debating with himself 鈥 mentally rehearsing every team talk, every tactical shift, every outcome.

鈥淎s a coach, we also like the pressure,鈥 he said, acknowledging the weight of expectation. 鈥淚t鈥檚 some adrenaline, you know? The competition. If there is no pressure in football, it鈥檚 not the same.鈥

But there is one thing that keeps his compass steady: positivity.

鈥淎t the end, we are always thinking, we will be so happy, this is the most important (thing).鈥

If Renard, in the campaign, is the lone runner at the start, the Saudi crowd is the thunder that roars behind him. The energy of the supporters at home fixtures has often been transformational for his players.

鈥淭his is fantastic. Especially when we play in Jeddah,鈥 Renard said. 鈥淭he atmosphere can be incredible. But I always tell the players (that) the fans will follow us if we show them we are determined, if we are motivated. The first actions come from us.鈥

It鈥檚 a two-way relationship built on belief. The team feeds off the passion of the fans, and in return, the fans draw strength from the fight of their players. It鈥檚 no surprise that the memory of that famous 2-1 victory over Argentina at the 2022 World Cup still echoes in every chant.

鈥淎lways remember this game,鈥 Renard added, his voice trailing into nostalgia. 鈥淏ut the focus is to try to do the same in the near future.鈥

With the 2026 FIFA World Cup looming and qualification rounds nearing conclusion, Renard鈥檚 attention is firmly on the immediate task of securing 黑料社区鈥檚 place on the global stage once again. Recent friendlies against North Macedonia and Czechia have, according to the coach, been pivotal on and off the pitch for his squad.

鈥淭he spirit was fantastic,鈥 Renard stressed. 鈥淲e changed five players for each game, but the spirit was the same 鈥 the way we started, the way we finished. We didn鈥檛 treat them as friendlies. We were already thinking about October.鈥

And the evolution isn鈥檛 just about the senior squad. With 黑料社区 set to host the 2034 World Cup, the development of young talent is becoming more crucial than ever.

鈥淭he league is getting stronger,鈥 Renard said. 鈥淪o, it鈥檚 good for some Saudi players. Now they need to compete more. They are playing with very big players. That (will) bring them some experience.

鈥淚鈥檓 sure they will get it. And they will be stronger for the future.鈥

Renard鈥檚 leadership is not flamboyant. It is thoughtful, relentless, and quietly commanding 鈥 like a long-distance runner who never stops moving forward. In his words and his work, there is always purpose.

鈥淟et鈥檚 do it together,鈥 he concluded, returning once more to that image of unity. 鈥淚t鈥檚 a collaborative kind of work.鈥

From the quiet moments of introspection on a solitary run to the roar of the stadium in Jeddah, Renard is leading a collective sprint toward a future that holds both challenge and promise. And in true Saudi fashion, the whole nation is running with him.

Jannik Sinner thrashes Learner Tien to win China Open for 21st title
  • The Italian world number two lifted the trophy for the second time on Beijing鈥檚 hard courts
  • Sinner鈥檚 win in Beijing marked his third title this season, after his victories at the Australian Open and Wimbledon

BEIJING: Jannik Sinner won the 21st title of his career by thrashing American teenager Learner Tien 6-2, 6-2 in the China Open final on Wednesday.
The Italian world number two lifted the trophy for the second time on Beijing鈥檚 hard courts, where he beat Daniil Medvedev in the final on his tournament debut in 2023.
The 24-year-old is the third man to win multiple China Open titles after Novak Djokovic with six and Rafael Nadal with two.
His only loss on Beijing鈥檚 center Diamond Court has been to great rival Carlos Alcaraz, who won last year鈥檚 championship match in three gripping sets.
Alcaraz was not defending his title in the Chinese capital and on Tuesday won the Japan Open in Tokyo.
Sinner broke immediately in the first set on the way to outclassing the 19-year-old Tien, who was in his first ATP final.
The world no. 52 got a rare chance to break in the second game of the second set but Sinner quickly retook control, ending a one-sided match with 10 aces over the 1h 12min final.
Tien would have been Beijing鈥檚 lowest-ranked champion in tournament history.
At 19 years and 9 months old, Tien would also have been the second-youngest American Tour champion since Andy Roddick in 2002.
As it was, he was never really in it, despite some flashes of his rich potential.
Sinner鈥檚 win in Beijing marked his third title this season, after his victories at the Australian Open and Wimbledon.
Sinner may now have a chance to snatch back the top ranking in men鈥檚 tennis before the season ends after Alcaraz pulled out of the Shanghai Masters injured on Tuesday.
The Spaniard took the world number one ranking from Sinner when he defeated the Italian in the US Open final.
Sinner will be the top seed in Shanghai, which began this week.

Japanese players headline Mid East Falcons roster for Baseball United鈥檚 first season

Japanese players headline Mid East Falcons roster for Baseball United鈥檚 first season
  • With 13 players aged 18 to 44, the Falcons will have a strong following of baseball fans from Japan

DUBAI: Baseball United has announced that 13 of the 23 roster spots for its Mid East Falcons franchise will feature Japanese players.

The Falcons will compete in the league鈥檚 inaugural season this November and December in Dubai.

The group represents nearly 60 percent of the team鈥檚 roster and includes nine players who have competed in the Nippon Professional Baseball League, the highest level of the game in Japan.

Japan is currently ranked No. 1 in the world by the World Baseball Softball Confederation, a position it has earned through decades of international dominance.

The country boasts a deep heritage dating back to the 19th century, with the NPB widely regarded as the No. 2 professional league in the world, behind Major League Baseball.

Japan has won multiple World Baseball Classic championships and consistently produces elite talent on both the domestic and MLB stage, including the reigning MVP from the Los Angeles Dodgers, Shohei Ohtani.

Japan boasts the highest per capita baseball viewership in the world. The nation鈥檚 games in the 2023 World Baseball Classic posted massive viewership, with all seven drawing 30 million or more viewers.

More recently, the 2024 MLB World Series averaged 12.9 million viewers in Japan, making it the most-watched Fall Classic in the country鈥檚 history.

Baseball United has been making inroads in the country over the past year, including through a partnership with the Tokyo Broadcasting System that includes a reality TV series to discover the nation鈥檚 next stars.

The competition鈥檚 top players will also join the Falcons roster. The winners will be announced before the start of the season.

鈥淛apan is one of the greatest baseball nations in the world,鈥 said Kash Shaikh, chairman, CEO, and co-founder of Baseball United.

鈥淚t has everything that produces elite baseball 鈥 an elite professional league, strong minor and independent leagues, exceptional high school programs, widespread youth engagement, and one of the most passionate fan bases in all of sports.

鈥淚t鈥檚 an honor to have so many Japanese players representing the Falcons. Their experience, talent, and knowledge of the game will make an immediate impact 鈥 not only on the field, but also in inspiring fans back home and across the world.鈥

The Japanese players represent a mix of international stars, NPB standouts, as well as young prospects from the Yokohama DeNA Baystars organization.

Munenori Kawasaki, 44, an infielder from Kagoshima, is a veteran whose career spans the NPB, MLB, Chinese Professional Baseball League, and now the Route-Inn BCL, a Japanese independent league.

He debuted with the Fukuoka Daiei Hawks (currently Fukuoka Softbank Hawks) in 2001 and later played in the US for the Seattle Mariners, Toronto Blue Jays, and Chicago Cubs. He also represented Japan at the 2006 and 2009 World Baseball Classics, winning both tournaments.

Kawasaki played in Taiwan with Wei Chuan Dragons in 2019, and since 2020 has been a member of the Tochigi Golden Braves in Japan鈥檚 independent BCL, where he plays and serves as a technical advisor.

Hiroyuki Nakajima, 43, an infielder from Hyogo, has built a distinguished career as a shortstop in the NPB, starring for the Seibu Lions, later joining the Orix Buffaloes, Yomiuri Giants and Chunichi Dragons.

In 2012, he signed with the Oakland Athletics, bringing his talents to the US. During his career in the NPB, he earned multiple Best Nine and Golden Glove awards and represented Japan in the 2008 Beijing Olympics and 2009 World Baseball Classic.

After announcing his retirement in 2024, Nakajima is now making a surprise return for Baseball United鈥檚 inaugural season, bringing veteran presence and decades of expertise to the clubhouse.

Shuhei Fukuda, 36, an outfielder from Kanagawa, who has played for the Fukuoka SoftBank Hawks and Chiba Lotte Marines in the NPB, is known for his speed and defensive range.

He announced his retirement in 2024, but in February 2025 returned to play in the Baseball United UAE Series. Later that year, he began serving as a special assignment coach and consultant with the Seattle Mariners, an uncommon honor for a Japanese player without prior MLB experience.

Manato Tanai, only 18, an infielder from Hiroshima, began his professional career when he was drafted by the Yokohama DeNA BayStars in 2024, and is regarded as one of their top prospects.

A right-handed hitter, he is known for his speed, strong arm, and reliable defense. In his rookie year, he played in the Eastern League, the NPB鈥檚 farm system, gaining experience and selection to the 2025 Fresh All-Star Game.

The Mid East Falcons will debut alongside the Mumbai Cobras, Karachi Monarchs, and Arabia Wolves in Baseball United鈥檚 first season this November. The Falcons鈥 first game is scheduled for Wednesday, Nov. 19, against the Monarchs.

The first season will feature 21 games in four weeks at Baseball United Ballpark in Dubai, with broadcasts to fans around the world. The season will culminate with the United Series 鈥 a best-of-three championship final 鈥 from Dec. 12 to 14.
