BARCELONA: Barcelona coach Hansi Flick said Saturday he has faith in veteran goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny after first choice stopper Joan Garcia suffered a knee injury.
Garcia will have surgery because of a meniscus injury and will miss between between four and six weeks, including Wednesday鈥檚 Champions League clash against Paris Saint-Germain.
Garcia was hurt at the end of Thursday鈥檚 win at Real Oviedo which left the champions two points behind La Liga leaders Real Madrid.
鈥淚t鈥檚 not good to not have Joan because he did a fantastic job. It was the last situation in the match against Oviedo. It happens,鈥 Flick told a news conference ahead of Barca鈥檚 game against Real Sociedad on Sunday.
鈥淣ow Tek (Szczesny) is back. And when you see the last season, the second part, we won almost every match. We won three trophies with him.
鈥淗e is a fantastic goalkeeper and a fantastic person. I have no doubts about that.鈥
Szczesny, 35, came out of retirement to sign for Barcelona last season when Marc-Andre ter Stegen suffered a knee injury.
The Polish goalkeeper established himself as first choice and helped Barcelona win a domestic treble of La Liga, the Copa del Rey and the Spanish Super Cup.
Flick also confirmed teenage winger Lamine Yamal would return to action after a groin injury.
鈥淲henever he鈥檚 on the bench or in the team, like tomorrow, he will have some minutes of course,鈥 said the coach.
鈥淓veryone is convinced that it鈥檚 the right moment to come back. We are happy we have him as an option for the match tomorrow.鈥

BEIJING: Jannik Sinner survived a scare to sink French qualifier Terence Atmane 6-4, 7-5, 6-0 at the China Open on Saturday as Iga Swiatek launched her title bid.
The world number two Italian Sinner will face 57th-ranked Fabian Marozsan of Hungary in the Beijing quarter-finals.
鈥淚t was a very tough match today,鈥 four-time Grand Slam champion Sinner said. 鈥淚 felt like he was serving great.鈥
Sinner said that he lost a bit of concentration during the second set but quickly recovered to steamroll past the 68th-ranked Atmane in the deciding set.
鈥淚 started off very well in the third set then I saw (Atmane) struggling a bit physically.
鈥淚t鈥檚 not how you want to win a match but very happy to be again in the next round.鈥
Atmane declared it would be a fight with two aces in the first game and made Sinner work for the first set.
Atmane sent down six more aces in the second and broke the 24-year-old Sinner to force a deciding set.
With the Frenchman flagging, Sinner raced to victory.
In the women鈥檚 draw, Swiatek breezed past home player Yuan Yue, cruising into round three with a 6-0, 6-3 victory.
The world number two from Poland next faces Colombia鈥檚 Camila Osorio, ranked 83rd.
Swiatek broke early to set the tone for an ultimately one-sided match against Yuan, winning the first set without dropping a game when the wildcard from China fired long.
Cheered on by her home crowd, the world no. 110 made a better fist of it in the second set but Swiatek wrapped things up when Yuan returned into the net.
Swiatek, who came to the Chinese capital after winning the title in Seoul, gave kudos to her opponent afterwards.
鈥淪he was reading the court pretty well,鈥 Swiatek said.
鈥淚t wasn鈥檛 easy and every game was tight.鈥
The six-time major champion is the top seed in Beijing after world number one Aryna Sabalenka withdrew with injury.
Swiatek won the prestigious WTA 1000 tournament in 2023 but missed the competition last year citing personal matters.
It later transpired she had accepted a one-month doping ban after testing positive for a prohibited substance.
鈥淚 have great memories,鈥 Swiatek said of her history in the Chinese capital.
鈥淏ut every tournament is a different story so you gotta start from the beginning and grind.鈥
Also in the women鈥檚 draw, world number five Mirra Andreeva of Russia swept aside Zhu Lin of China 6-2, 6-2 and American Jessica Pegula dispatched Australian Ajla Tomljanovic 6-0, 6-3.

West Ham sack Potter, Nuno tipped to take over
  • Potter鈥檚 exit was widely expected after the Hammers slumped to second bottom of the table ahead of Monday鈥檚 trip to Everton
  • Nuno is expected to replace Potter in time for the clash with Everton after reports the Portuguese coach has had positive talks with the West Ham board

LONDON: West Ham sacked Graham Potter on Saturday after only nine months in charge, with former Nottingham Forest boss Nuno Espirito Santo tipped to take over the troubled Premier League club.
Potter鈥檚 exit was widely expected after the Hammers slumped to second bottom of the table ahead of Monday鈥檚 trip to Everton.
Nuno is expected to replace Potter in time for the clash with Everton after reports the Portuguese coach has had positive talks with the West Ham board.
Potter managed just three points from West Ham鈥檚 five league matches this season, while they also crashed out of the League Cup against Wolves.
The former Chelsea and Brighton manager only took the reins at the London Stadium in January, with last season鈥檚 disappointing 14th place finish putting pressure on him to hit the ground running this season.

Last weekend鈥檚 home defeat against Crystal Palace proved the final straw.
Potter, who lost five of West Ham鈥檚 six games this season, was relieved of his duties less than 24 hours after holding his usual pre-match press conference on Friday.
鈥淩esults and performances over the course of the second half of last season and the start of the 2025/26 season have not matched expectations,鈥 West Ham said in a statement.
鈥淭he board of directors believe that a change is necessary in order to help improve the team鈥檚 position in the Premier League as soon as possible.鈥
Former Tottenham and Wolves boss Nuno was sacked by Forest owner Evangelos Marinakis three weeks ago after the pair fell out over the club鈥檚 transfer policy.
Nuno earned praise for lifting Forest into European competition for the first time in 30 years last season via a seventh-place finish in the Premier League.
He also impressed at Wolves, helping establish them in the top-flight before leaving for a turbulent 17-match spell at Tottenham that ended in the sack.

- Potter 鈥榬idiculed鈥 -

Potter won only six of his 25 West Ham matches after replacing Julen Lopetegui, who lasted just 22 matches after taking over from David Moyes, who is now in charge of Everton.
Despite Potter鈥檚 substantial spending on eight new signings in the summer transfer window, West Ham made a woeful start to the season.
A 3-0 win at Nottingham Forest last month provided some respite, but West Ham went down by the same score to Tottenham after the international break before the Palace loss heralded the end of his dismal spell in charge
Potter, who lasted less than seven months before being axed as Chelsea boss in 2023, admitted the Palace loss was a 鈥渢ough moment鈥 as he and his team were booed off at the final whistle.
The 50-year-old鈥檚 struggles made him a viral trend on social media, with people using AI technology to swap his face on to other celebrities, including Barbie, Donald Trump and the Chuckle Brothers.
Speaking on Friday, Potter said he had not been taking it too seriously.
鈥淚t made my 15-year-old son laugh a lot so you have to accept what comes with it,鈥 he said.
鈥淎t times it鈥檚 ridicule but that is just the environment we are in. It is what it is.鈥
West Ham confirmed that assistant coach Bruno Saltor, first team coaches Billy Reid and Narcis Pelach, lead goalkeeper coach Casper Ankergren, and goalkeeper coach Linus Kandolin have also left with immediate effect.
鈥淭he process of appointing a replacement is underway. The club will be making no further comment at this time,鈥 the club statement added.

Al-Ittihad manager Laurent Blanc voices frustration after 2-0 loss to Al-Nassr in Saudi Professional League
  • Defensive shortcomings exposed as home defeat ends Al-Ittihad鈥檚 3-match unbeaten run
  • Al-Nassr director Jorge Jesus hails 鈥榞reat victory against title-holders鈥

JEDDAH: Al-Ittihad manager Laurent Blanc expressed his frustration after a 2-0 loss at home on Friday to Al-Nassr ended their three-match unbeaten run in the Saudi Professional League.

During his post-match press conference at Alinma Stadium, Blanc said: 鈥淚鈥檓 having defensive problems that I鈥檝e discussed before. I don鈥檛 have many solutions, as they depend on the available players. Currently, I only have Ahmed Sharahili and Yassin.鈥

He added: 鈥淚njuries are part of football, but the pressure of matches (every three days) has made the situation more difficult, and most of the injuries have been in the back line.鈥

The Al-Ittihad coach did not hesitate to acknowledge the strength of his opponents, saying: 鈥淲e faced a stronger team than us, and that鈥檚 the truth that some may not want to hear.鈥

Regarding questions surrounding the defeat, Blanc said: 鈥淭his is our first loss in a long time. We have achieved 17 wins and one draw in our last 18 home matches. So, I am surprised by this question, and we must review the results.鈥

Meanwhile, Portuguese Jorge Jesus, director of Al-Nassr Club, expressed his happiness with the victory over Al-Ittihad in the fourth round of the competition.

鈥淚t was a good victory against last season鈥檚 title-holders, but today we were better than them and could have finished with a score greater than 2-0,鈥 Jesus said in a press conference after the match.

鈥淚 was surprised by the presence of a large number of Al-Nassr fans in Jeddah, and I was impressed by what the Al-Ittihad fans did during the match. This is a good thing for Saudi football, and I hope to see more fans like Al-Ittihad and Al-Nassr.鈥

India beat Sri Lanka, to face Pakistan in Asia Cup final in Dubai on Sunday
  • Sri Lanka gave a good account of themselves and matched India鈥檚 202-5 to force the Super Over
  • Abhishek, the top-ranked T20 batter, maintained his red-hot form with a sizzling 61 off 31 balls

DUBAI: Defending champions India survived Pathum Nissanka鈥檚 blistering hundred and some intense Super Over drama before beating Sri Lanka in a dead rubber to maintain their unbeaten run in the Asia Cup on Friday.

With India having already secured their place in Sunday鈥檚 final against Pakistan and Sri Lanka eliminated, the Super Fours clash was of merely academic interest but it turned out to be the most exciting game of this year鈥檚 tournament.

Sri Lanka gave a good account of themselves and matched India鈥檚 202-5 to force the Super Over after Nissanka (107) smashed the first individual hundred of this year鈥檚 tournament.

Sri Lanka, however, managed only two runs in the Super Over before losing both the wickets in five deliveries from Arshdeep Singh.

India skipper Suryakumar Yadav took three runs from the first delivery from Wanindu Hasaranga to seal their victory in a matter-of-fact way.

Earlier, put into bat, 20-overs world champions India racked up the tournament鈥檚 first 200-plus total riding opener Abhishek Sharma鈥檚 third consecutive fifty in the tournament.

Abhishek, the world鈥檚 top-ranked T20 batter, maintained his red-hot form with a sizzling 61 off 31 balls.

Opening partner Shubman Gill fell for four and skipper Suryakumar鈥檚 (12) slump in form continued but India did not really suffer as Abhishek raced to a 22-ball fifty.

Sri Lanka captain Charith Asalanka removed Abhishek but Tilak Varma, who made 49 not out, and Sanju Samson (39) maintained the pressure on the Sri Lankan bowlers.

In their chase, Sri Lanka lost Kusal Mendis for a duck in the first over but cruised to 72-1 after the six powerplay overs.

India rested pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah, while Hardik Pandya bowled just one over before leaving the field.

Nissanka needed 25 balls to bring up his fifty and Kusal Perera (58) could not be denied his half-century either.

Spinner Varun Chakravarthy broke the 127-run stand when he dismissed Perera.

Nissanka raced to a 52-ball hundred but fell in the first ball of the last over, which ended with Sri Lanka also on 202-5 forcing the Super Over.
