  • Backed by Saudi, US investment, ShopUp merges with Sary to form SILQ
  • Merger prompts Bangladesh鈥檚 central bank to establish special startup fund

DHAKA: Bangladesh鈥檚 largest B2B commerce platform ShopUp has entered 黑料社区鈥檚 startup ecosystem through a merger with Riyadh-based services and marketplace platform Sary, backed by US and Saudi investors.

Both ShopUp and Sary help small businesses buy products in bulk from wholesalers or manufacturers with digital ordering platforms, delivery and financial services.

Together they have formed SILQ Group, backed by a $110 million funding led by Sanabil Investments 鈥 a company owned by the Saudi Public Investment Fund and Peter Thiel鈥檚 Valar Ventures.

The companies said in their merger announcement on Wednesday that they are 鈥渟et to become one of the world鈥檚 largest trade corridors. It is projected to reach $682 billion.鈥

鈥淲e鈥檙e building infrastructure that helps small businesses move goods, access financing, and grow. A key part of this is the launch of SILQ Financial, our dedicated financing arm focused on driving innovation in SME funding. It allows us to offer embedded financial products 鈥 natively within our platforms,鈥 ShopUp鈥檚 CEO Afeef Zaman told Arab News.

鈥淭here鈥檚 a $682 billion trade opportunity emerging right here between the Gulf and Emerging Asia. We want to go deep and serve this corridor well ... We鈥檙e laying the foundation to expand beyond this corridor in the long term.鈥

ShopUp was founded by Zaman, Ataur Rahim Chowdhury, and Navaneetha Krishnan J. in 2017, while Sary was founded in 2018 by Mohammed Aldossary and Khaled Alsiari.

Zaman will serve as the CEO of SILQ Group and Aldossary as CEO of SILQ Financial.

ShopUp and Sary have served more than 600,000 retailers, hotels, restaurants, cafes, and wholesalers, to date. The combined network has facilitated over $5 billion in transactions and disbursed more than $750 million in embedded financing.

Zaman believes that more Bangladeshi startups will follow in ShopUp鈥檚 footsteps, as the Saudi market offers not only scale, capital, and sophistication, but also a cultural overlap, a strong consumer base 鈥 including 3 million Bangladeshi expats 鈥 鈥渁nd a hunger for innovation鈥 across retail, finance, and logistics.

鈥淏angladeshi startups have a lot to offer in terms of resilience and operating in high-density, resource-constrained environments. In return, 黑料社区 offers access to institutional partnerships, forward-thinking regulation, and the ability to test and scale products that can work globally,鈥 he said.

鈥満诹仙缜 is writing one of the most exciting startup stories in the world right now. The pace of change, the vision, and the level of institutional support 鈥 especially for high-impact sectors like fintech, logistics, and B2B 鈥 make it one of the most promising markets for founders.鈥

The Bangladeshi government welcomed ShopUp鈥檚 merger as 鈥渁 defining moment鈥 in its digital journey and 鈥渙ne of the most significant global expansion milestones ever achieved by a startup from Bangladesh.鈥

It also announced the establishment of a dedicated fund to provide capital support to startup companies.

鈥淭his moment is more than a funding headline 鈥 it鈥檚 a clear signal that Bangladeshi startups are ready for the world stage,鈥 the government鈥檚 press wing said in a statement.

鈥淭o accelerate this momentum, Bangladesh Bank has committed to a landmark startup funding initiative: TK 800 crore (about $66 million) in equity and TK 400 crore (about $33 million) in debt. This fund will serve as a catalytic boost for early and growth-stage startups, empowering local founders to innovate, scale, and compete globally.鈥

STOCKHOLM: A US-Japanese trio on Monday won the Nobel Prize in Medicine for research into how the immune system is kept in check by identifying its 鈥渟ecurity guards,鈥 the Nobel jury said.

The discoveries by Mary Brunkow and Fred Ramsdell of the US and Japan鈥檚 Shimon Sakaguchi have been decisive for understanding how the immune system functions and why we do not all develop serious autoimmune diseases.

Sakaguchi, a professor at Osaka University, told a press conference in Japan he hoped the award would 鈥渟erve as an opportunity for this field to develop further ... in a direction where it can be applied in actual bedside and clinical settings.鈥

The Nobel committee was unable to reach the two US-based laureates to break the news to them in person.

鈥淚f you hear this, call me,鈥 the secretary-general of the Nobel committee, Thomas Perlmann, joked at the press conference announcing the winners.

The three won the prize for research that identified the immune system鈥檚 鈥渟ecurity guards,鈥 called regulatory T-cells.

Their work concerns 鈥減eripheral immune tolerance鈥 that prevents the immune system from harming the body, and has led to a new field of research and the development of potential medical treatments now being evaluated in clinical trials.

鈥淭he hope is to be able to treat or cure autoimmune diseases, provide more effective cancer treatments and prevent serious complications after stem cell transplants,鈥 the jury said.

  • 鈥淎ttacks against Britain鈥檚 Muslims are attacks against all Britons and this country itself鈥

LONDON: Police were investigating on Monday what they called a hate crime after a mosque was set on fire in an English coastal town.
Emergency services responded to reports of a fire at the Peacehaven Mosque at around 9:45 p.m. (2245 GMT) on Saturday.
The front entrance of the mosque and a vehicle parked outside were damaged, but no one was injured, according to Sussex Police.
UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer condemned the attack. Starmer鈥檚 spokesperson said that the prime minister was 鈥渁ppalled by the arson attack in Peacehaven.鈥
Footage from the incident, released on Sunday by police, shows two balaclava-clad people approach the front door of the mosque, before spraying accelerant on the entrance and igniting a fire.
Political and religious leaders condemned the attack and urged people to stand united.
Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood said the attack was 鈥渄eeply concerning.鈥
鈥淭his country鈥檚 greatest strength has been its ability to build one nation from many communities,鈥 she said. 鈥淎ttacks against Britain鈥檚 Muslims are attacks against all Britons and this country itself.鈥
鈥淭his hateful act does not represent our community or our town,鈥 a spokesperson for Peacehaven mosque said. 鈥淧eacehaven has always been a place of kindness, respect, and mutual support, and we will continue to embody those values.鈥
Phil Rosenberg, president of the Board of Deputies of British Jews, also condemned the attack, adding that 鈥渆very faith community has the right to worship free from fear.鈥
Detective Inspector Gavin Patch said police were treating Saturday鈥檚 fire as arson with intent to endanger life.
Evidence from the scene suggested it was started deliberately, according to the East Sussex Fire and Rescue Service.
鈥淭his was an appalling and reckless attack which we know will have left many people feeling less safe,鈥 Patch said.
There has been an increased police presence at the scene and other places of worship across Sussex, a region in southeastern England, to provide reassurance, the force said.
The attacks come amid high tensions over the Israel-Hamas war in Gaza.
Pro-Palestinian demonstrations have been held regularly across the UK since the start of Israel鈥檚 military offensive in Gaza.
The protests have been overwhelmingly peaceful, but some people say they have allowed antisemitism to spread. A handful of pro-Palestinian protesters have been arrested for supporting Hamas, which is banned in the UK.
On Saturday, about 1,000 people gathered in Trafalgar Square to protest against the banning of Palestine Action. This direct action group has vandalized British military planes and targeted sites with links to the Israeli military. It has been labeled a terrorist organization by the government, making support for the group illegal.
A day later, hundreds of people waving Israeli and British flags rallied in London and Manchester to mark nearly two years since the Hamas-led attack on southern Israel on Oct. 7, 2023, and demand the hostages鈥 release and mourn the victims of Thursday鈥檚 synagogue attack.

  • 鈥淭he war waged by the Israeli army to eliminate Hamas militants disregards the fact that it is targeting a largely defenseless population, already pushed to the brink, in an area where buildings and homes are reduced to rubble,鈥 he said

VATICAN CITY: The Vatican鈥檚 top diplomat sharply criticized Israel鈥檚 鈥渙ngoing massacre鈥 in Gaza in comments published on Monday 鈥 one of the Catholic Church鈥檚 strongest condemnations of Israel鈥檚 war against Hamas.
In an interview tied to the second anniversary of the attack on Israeli communities on Oct. 7, 2023, Cardinal Pietro Parolin also called those attacks 鈥渋nhuman and indefensible鈥 and urged Hamas to free remaining hostages.
鈥淭hose who are attacked have a right to defend themselves, but even legitimate defense must respect the principle of proportionality,鈥 said Parolin, the Vatican secretary of state and one of Pope Leo鈥檚 top deputies.
鈥淭he war waged by the Israeli army to eliminate Hamas militants disregards the fact that it is targeting a largely defenseless population, already pushed to the brink, in an area where buildings and homes are reduced to rubble,鈥 he said.
鈥淚t is ... clear that the international community is, unfortunately, powerless and that the countries truly capable of exerting influence have so far failed to act to stop the ongoing massacre,鈥 Parolin told the Vatican鈥檚 media outlet.
Pope Leo, elected in May after the death of Pope Francis, has been stepping up criticism of Israel鈥檚 campaign in Gaza.
He has urged Israel to let in more aid and raise Gaza in a meeting with Israeli President Isaac Herzog in September.
Parolin added: 鈥淚t鈥檚 not enough to say that what is happening is unacceptable and then continue to allow it to happen.
鈥淲e must seriously ask ourselves about the legitimacy ... of continuing to supply weapons that are being used against civilians.鈥
He did not name any countries.
Israel attacked Gaza after the attack in 2023. Israel鈥檚 campaign has killed more than 67,000 in Gaza, mostly civilians, according to Gaza health authorities.

  • Swedish climate campaigner Greta Thunberg was among them
  • Activists unfurled a huge Palestinian flag and chanted 鈥淔reedom for Palestine鈥

ATHENS: Greece鈥檚 foreign ministry said 161 nationals from 16 European countries landed in Athens on Monday after being expelled by Israel for taking part in a Gaza aid flotilla.

Israel on Monday deported more activists who were on the flotilla bound for the devastated Palestinian territory, including Swedish climate campaigner Greta Thunberg.

The 45-vessel flotilla had been aiming to break an Israeli blockade to deliver aid to Gaza, where the United Nations says famine has taken hold after two years of devastating conflict.

鈥淎 special repatriation flight landed safely in Athens carrying the 27 Greek citizens who took part in the 鈥楪lobal Sumud Flotilla鈥,鈥 the Greek foreign ministry said in a statement.

鈥淭his flight also facilitated the return of 134 nationals from 15 European countries,鈥 it added, without elaborating.

According to the Swedish branch of the Global Movement for Gaza, the deported Swedish nationals were on board the flight.

At Athens International Airport, activists unfurled a huge Palestinian flag in the arrivals hall and chanted 鈥淔reedom for Palestine鈥 and 鈥淟ong live the flotilla!,鈥 AFP reporters saw.

The Global Sumud flotilla departed from Barcelona in Spain in early September.

The vessels were boarded by the Israeli navy off Egypt and the Gaza Strip between October 1 and 3.

Israel, which accuses the flotilla of being an offshoot of Hamas, the Palestinian Islamist movement with which it has been at war for two years in the Gaza Strip, claims that the boats violated a prohibited zone and that no humanitarian aid was found on board the vessels.

The ships were forcibly diverted to the Israeli port of Ashdod. According to Israeli police, more than 470 people aboard the flotilla boats were arrested.

The first deportations began on October 2 and currently 138 flotilla participants remain in detention in Israel, the foreign ministry told AFP.

Israeli hostage families want Nobel Peace Prize for Trump
  • Hostages and Missing Families Forum said Trump made 鈥減ossible what many said was impossible鈥
  • Trump has publicly said he wants the Nobel Peace Prize, though experts say his chances are slim

JERUSALEM: An Israeli advocacy group campaigning for the release of hostages in Gaza on Monday called for US President Donald Trump to be awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for his 鈥渄etermination to bring peace鈥 to the region.
In a letter sent to the Norwegian Nobel Committee, the Hostages and Missing Families Forum said Trump made 鈥減ossible what many said was impossible.鈥
鈥淲e strongly urge you to award President Trump the Nobel Peace Prize because he has vowed he will not rest and will not stop until every last hostage is back home,鈥 the forum said in a statement, citing the letter.
鈥淎t this very moment, President Trump鈥檚 comprehensive plan to release all remaining hostages and finally end this terrible war is on the table,鈥 it added.
鈥淚n this past year, no leader or organization has contributed more to peace around the world than President Trump,鈥 the forum said.
The call comes as high-stakes negotiations between Israel and Hamas are set to begin later on Monday in Egypt, based on a 20-point plan announced by Trump last week.
Trump has publicly said he wants the Nobel Peace Prize, though experts say his chances are slim.
The US leader claims to have resolved six or seven wars in as many months 鈥 a figure experts say is grossly exaggerated.
