Nottm Forest felled by Isak as Newcastle bolster top four bid
  • Eddie Howe’s side recovered from Callum Hudson-Odoi’s early opener to run riot

NEWCASTLE: Newcastle blew Nottingham Forest away with four goals in 11 minutes as Alexander Isak’s double inspired a vital 4-3 win in the race to finish in the Premier League’s top four.
Eddie Howe’s side recovered from Callum Hudson-Odoi’s early opener to run riot with a first half goal spree at St. James’ Park on Sunday.
Lewis Miley bagged Newcastle’s equalizer, sparking an astonishing spell of dominance as Jacob Murphy put the hosts ahead.
Isak netted twice in less than two minutes to reach 50 Premier League goals and leave Forest in tatters.
The Sweden striker has 19 league goals this season, taking him level with Manchester City’s Erling Haaland in second place behind Liverpool’s Mohamed Salah in this season’s scoring chart.
Nikola Milenkovic and Ryan Yates scored for Forest in the second half, but it was too late for an incredible escape act.
After three defeats in their previous four league games, fifth-placed Newcastle are back in the hunt to qualify for next season’s Champions League via a top four finish.
The Magpies are behind fourth-placed Manchester City on goal difference, with third-placed Forest just three points above them.
“I’m trying to control my thoughts and stay positive. We won the game and that’s what we needed to do,” Howe said.
“It was a great performance in the first half, then a couple of frailties showed in terms of defending set plays.
“We can reflect on that. There are things we can do better. We pride ourselves on getting the details right.”
Forest boss Nuno Espirito Santo added: “In the first half I didn’t recognize our team. In the second half we were much better.
“We made mistakes. It was two totally different halves. We started well and then they just rolled over us.”
Newcastle keeper Nick Pope made his first league start since early December in place of Martin Dubravka.
But Pope was partially at fault as Newcastle gifted Forest the lead in sloppy style after just six minutes
Jacob Murphy lost the ball in his own half as Hudson-Odoi pressured the Newcastle midfielder into conceding possession.
Hudson-Odoi wasn’t closed down quickly enough by Dan Burn and the winger unloaded a powerful low drive that caught Pope out of position as it flashed into the net.
Miley ensured Newcastle’s strong response to that early setback was rewarded in the 23rd minute.
With Forest’s usually rock-solid defense slow to react, Miley had time to control Lewis Hall’s pass inside the penalty area and drill his shot through a sea of legs past unsighted keeper Matz Sels.
Murphy made amends for his earlier mistake to put Howe’s team ahead two minutes after Miley’s equalizer.
Hall’s driving run was the catalyst as the defender took Isak’s return pass and hit a deflected cross that looped over Sels for Murphy to bundle home from virtually on the goal-line.
Newcastle were firing on all cylinders and they struck again in the 33rd minute.
Ola Aina used his arm to block Hall’s cross, conceding a penalty that Isak dispatched past Sels with an audacious lofted effort that left the keeper sprawled on his back as he tried in vain to claw it out.
Forest had no answer to Newcastle’s intensity and it was no surprise when they conceded a fourth just 60 seconds later.
Joe Willock raced unchecked through the Forest midfield and slipped his pass to Isak, whose shot from 12 yards took a deflection on its way past the wrong-footed Sels.
Newcastle eased up in the second half and Milenkovic reduced the deficit in the 63rd minute, flicking Chris Wood’s cross past Pope from close-range.
When Yates steered home in the 90th minute, a nervous hush descended on St. James’ Park, but Newcastle held on by their fingernails.

Abu Dhabi set for three-day NBA Academy Showcase

Abu Dhabi set for three-day NBA Academy Showcase
  • NBA’s vice president and head of basketball operations for Europe and the Middle East, says the league’s collaboration with DCT Abu Dhabi since 2022 has accelerated basketball growth in the region
  • Standfirst 2: Showcase will be at NYU Abu Dhabi before the Knicks and 76ers meet at Etihad Arena on Oct. 2 and 4

ABU DHABI: When Shai Gilgeous-Alexander capped off the 2024-2025 season by leading the Oklahoma City Thunder to the NBA championship and claiming both the regular season MVP and finals MVP awards, he became the latest alumnus of the NBA’s Basketball Without Borders program, part of the league’s global development pathway, to reach the pinnacle of the sport.

That pathway will be on display in Abu Dhabi this month with the first NBA Academy Showcase in the Middle East, hosted at New York University Abu Dhabi from Sept. 25-27. The event will bring together elite youth teams from Senegal’s NBA Academy Africa, Australia’s Centre of Excellence, France’s INSEP Academy, and the US-based IMG Academy Ascenders, who will compete in front of NCAA coaches and NBA scouts as they look to take the next step toward college or professional careers.

Neal Meyer, vice president and head of basketball operations for NBA Europe and the Middle East, told Arab News the choice of Abu Dhabi was no coincidence.

“Since 2022, our collaboration with the Department of Culture and Tourism – Abu Dhabi has significantly accelerated the growth of basketball across the region, with Abu Dhabi emerging as a key regional hub for basketball development,” he said.

“The city’s world-class infrastructure, commitment to creating opportunities for young people to play basketball, and international outlook make it an ideal location for this first-of-its-kind elite event.”

The showcase takes place just days before the New York Knicks and Philadelphia 76ers face off at Etihad Arena on Oct. 2 and 4 as part of the NBA Abu Dhabi Games 2025 presented by ADQ.

The games will give fans in the region a rare chance to see some of the world’s best players in person, with two of the NBA’s historic rivals to meet in the UAE capital.

Meyer believes the back-to-back events underline how Abu Dhabi has quickly established itself on the world basketball map.

Globally, the NBA Academy and Basketball Without Borders programs have produced more than 140 NBA and WNBA draftees, including Philadelphia 76ers star Joel Embiid, the 2023 NBA MVP who fans will see in action at Etihad Arena.

The NBA Academy programs have alumni from more than 40 countries who earned NCAA Division I scholarships, underlining their role as a gateway to elite basketball.

“These success stories provide young boys and girls across the world with real-life examples to look up to and allows them to dream of a future playing elite basketball,” Meyer said. “Bringing the live NBA experience to Abu Dhabi through preseason games has been a huge driver.

“But also everything we’re doing to create more opportunities for youth to play the game, whether that’s by expanding our Jr. NBA Abu Dhabi League that has reached more than 20,000 boys and girls since we launched it in 2022 or refurbishing community basketball courts in collaboration with ADQ,” he added.

Since the inaugural NBA Abu Dhabi Games in 2022, participation has surged by more than 400 percent in the capital. Across the UAE, basketball has grown by 60 percent, while the wider Middle East has recorded growth of more than 50 percent.

With initiatives such as the Jr. NBA Abu Dhabi League, refurbished community courts and now the inaugural NBA Academy Showcase, the NBA is laying the foundations for a long-term talent pathway in Abu Dhabi and the wider Middle East.

Arab players such as Lebanon’s Rony Seikaly and Egypt’s Alaa Abdelnaby and Abdel Nader have featured in the league before, but with Abu Dhabi driving the game’s growth — and the showcase providing a new platform for young prospects — the stage may now be set for the emergence of the first Emirati player in the NBA.

“Given the popularity, interest and now opportunities to play basketball in the UAE, there’s no reason why we shouldn’t start to soon see NBA-level players coming from the region,” Meyer said.

“Our grassroots efforts in Abu Dhabi — including events like these — are important steps in building a pipeline to one day produce the NBA’s first Emirati player.”

  • Turki Alalshikh is promoting the event under Riyadh Season
  • Former New England Patriot quarterback ‘excited to return’

RIYADH: American NFL legend Tom Brady will participate in a flag football event in Riyadh next year, organizers announced on Monday.

Brady, Fanatics, FOX Sports and OBB Media are teaming up to deliver the event on Saturday, March 21, 2026.

He will be joined by some of the NFL’s biggest names at Kingdom Arena in Riyadh as a part of this year’s Riyadh Season.

Brady is partnering with Turki Alalshikh, chairman of the General Entertainment Authority, to promote the event.

Alalshikh reportedly said: “Riyadh Season prides itself on staging world-class events and this is certain to be the biggest competition of its kind yet in flag football.”

Alalshikh added that it would bring “together some of the most prominent names in sports and entertainment for what promises to be a highly competitive and unforgettable event.”

The event, The Fanatics Flag Football Classic, is a round-robin tournament featuring three teams of current and former NFL players and world-class athletes, including Brady, who makes his first return to the field since his retirement in 2023.

Flag football is the fastest-growing sport in the world, with more than 20 million players globally, and will debut at the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics.

Flag football is a variant of American or Canadia gridiron football, where instead of tackling players to the ground, the defensive team must remove a flag or flag belt from the ball carrier to end a down.

The event will be broadcast live on FOX Sports and available on Tubi.

Other confirmed players include Saquon Barkley, CeeDee Lamb, Christian McCaffrey, Sauce Gardner, Myles Garrett, Brock Bowers, Maxx Crosby, Tyreek Hill, Odell Beckham Jr., and Rob Gronkowski.

Additional participants, which will feature stars across sports and entertainment, will be announced in the coming months. The teams will also be led by three of the best coaches in football today: Pete Carroll, Sean Payton and Kyle Shanahan.

The former New England Patriot quarterback said: “I couldn’t be more excited to return to the field, get the competitive juices flowing alongside some of the game’s brightest stars and iconic legends, and bring a truly unique global sports event to fans everywhere during Riyadh Season.”

Riyad Mahrez wins it for Al-Ahli after Al-Ittihad stumble in Asia
  • Al-Ahli starts title defense with dramatic 4-2 win over Nasaf Qarshi
  • UAE’s Al-Wahda beat Saudi Pro League champions Al-Ittihad 2-1

JEDDAH: Al-Ahli started their defense of the AFC Champions League Elite title on Monday with a dramatic 4-2 win over Uzbekistan’s Nasaf Qarshi while Jeddah rivals Al-Ittihad slumped to a 2-1 loss at Al-Wahda of the UAE.

The holders found themselves 2-0 down at the break thanks to two goals from Khusayin Norchaev.

Merih Demiral gave the ball away just after the half-hour and the striker made no mistake. Then, four minutes before the break, the 23-year-old ran on to a through ball and slotted past Edouard Mendy from the right side of the area.

Al-Ahli threw everything at the Central Asian visitors in the second half and were given a lifeline after 65 minutes. Abduvohid Nematov came out of his area to clear a pass over the top, missed and there was Enzo Millot to shoot into the empty net.

Four minutes later and the French midfielder was on hand to score from much closer range, slotting home a loose ball after the away team had failed to clear a number of dangerous attacks.

Then, four minutes into added time, Riyad Mahrez cut in from the right to fire a low shot into the opposite corner, and there was still time for Mohammed Sulaiman to add a fourth and seal a dramatic victory.

It was the opposite feeling for Saudi Pro League champions Al-Ittihad. The Tigers went ahead in Abu Dhabi when Steven Bergwijn smashed home a fierce drive from well outside the area in the 21st minute.

The goal came against the run of play, with Al-Ittihad struggling to find their rhythm. It did not improve as the Jeddah giants were reduced to 10 men eight minutes before the break as Muhannad Al-Shanqiti saw red for a foul on Facundo Kruspzky.

The hosts finally got the goal they deserved just after the hour. Syrian Omar Khribin provided a pass for Caio Canedo to slot home from close range.

Al-Ittihad looked like going back home with a point but that was snatched away in the 98th minute. Predrag Rajkovic saved a close-range header from Alaeddine Zouhir and there was Lucas Pimenta to fire home the rebound.

Sri Lanka survive Hong Kong scare for four wicket Asia Cup win

DUBAI: Sri Lanka were made to sweat before edging Hong Kong by four wickets in the Asia Cup on Monday, as Wanindu Hasaranga’s late cameo spared the former champions an embarrassing stumble.

Chasing 150 on a sluggish surface, Sri Lanka looked comfortable at 119 for two with 31 needed off 30 deliveries, but a flurry of wickets, four for eight runs, set nerves jangling.

Hasaranga steadied the innings with an unbeaten 20 off nine balls, striking two fours and a six to seal victory with seven balls left.

Pathum Nissanka was again the batting linchpin, cracking 68 off 44 balls with six fours and two sixes. The opener, ranked seventh in the ICC T20 batting standings, posted back-to-back half-centuries to become the tournament’s leading scorer with 118 runs. Fortune favored him. He was reprieved on 22, 58 and 59, before being run out going for a risky second.

Hong Kong’s spirited effort was undermined by sloppy fielding as they grassed five catches that might have turned the contest on its head.

“It was a very good performance but we’re disappointed we dropped so many catches,” said skipper Yasim Murtaza.

Earlier, after being sent in, Hong Kong charged to 31 for no loss in the first three overs. A 61-run stand from Anshuman Rath (48) and Nizakat Khan (52) anchored their innings, the latter posting his 12th half-century.

Dushmantha Chameera’s pace proved too hot to handle, finishing with two wickets.

“Very pleased with my form, but we have a long way to go,” said Nissanka, who continues to flourish at the top of the order.

The win puts Sri Lanka top of Group B, all but ensuring a place in the second round with one match in hand.
