Five-star Barcelona smash Real Madrid to win Spanish Super Cup in Jeddah

Five-star Barcelona smash Real Madrid to win Spanish Super Cup in Jeddah
  • Kylian Mbappe put Madrid ahead but dominant Barcelona hit five in response

JEDDAH: Barcelona hammered rivals Real Madrid 5-2 in a wild Spanish Super Cup Clasico final in 黑料社区 on Sunday to win the first trophy of the Hansi Flick era.
The electric Kylian Mbappe sent Madrid ahead but a dominant Barcelona hit five in response before their goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny was sent off in the second half.
Madrid were hoping to avenge their 4-0 defeat by Barcelona in October鈥檚 La Liga Clasico but instead were left battered and bruised by their arch-rivals in Jeddah.
After Mbappe鈥檚 opener, Lamine Yamal levelled and Robert Lewandowski sent Barcelona ahead from the penalty spot, with Raphinha bagging a brace and Alejandro Balde also on target.
Rodrygo Goes pulled one back for Madrid with a free-kick but they could not capitalize further on their numerical advantage in a humiliating defeat for the European champions.
Both Flick and his opposite number Carlo Ancelotti opted to maintain the same line-ups they started with in the semifinals.
Yamal issued Madrid an early warning with a curling effort from the right which forced Thibaut Courtois into a fine save.
The Belgian goalkeeper also produced a strong stop to keep a Raphinha header at bay after the Brazilian evaded Lucas Vazquez with ease.
Despite Barcelona鈥檚 opening salvo it was Real Madrid who took the lead in the fifth minute with Mbappe鈥檚 brilliant goal on the counter-attack.
The French forward, frustrated numerous times by the offside flag in the league defeat by the Catalans, broke loose on the halfway line after Vinicius won the ball back and, after bursting into the area, clipped past Szczesny.
It took a stunning individual goal from 17-year-old Yamal to level the scoreline, with the Spanish winger cutting in from the right before stroking home a low finish inside the near post in a similar style to former Barca great Lionel Messi, whom he is often compared to.
Inigo Martinez hobbled off injured and Flick sent on Ronald Araujo in his place, amidst heavy transfer speculation the Uruguayan defender wants to leave the club.
Barcelona kept pushing and moved ahead through Lewandowski鈥檚 penalty after Eduardo Camavinga arrived late and carelessly clattered Gavi.
Raphinha soon added Barcelona鈥檚 third with a header from Jules Kounde鈥檚 cross from deep and they grabbed their fourth before half-time on the break.
Yamal and Raphinha combined and the latter slipped in Balde, who slotted past Courtois.
Barcelona continued in the same vein after the break and Raphinha netted the fifth with a neat dribble and finish after Marc Casado played him in.
The Catalans were reduced to 10 men when Mbappe sped in at the other end, rounding goalkeeper Szczesny, who brought him down outside the area and after a VAR review was dismissed.
Rodrygo, who earlier hit the post, rifled home the free-kick past Szczesny鈥檚 replacement Inaki Pena.
Mbappe brilliantly teed up Jude Bellingham but the England international was denied by a superb Kounde challenge in stoppage time.
The French forward also came close to scoring again himself on a fine individual display but Pena tipped away his effort.
Barcelona brought on midfielder Dani Olmo for his first appearance since he was registered to play for the club on a temporary basis, a controversial issue which overshadowed the semifinals earlier in the week.
However their five-star display offered a host of other talking points as Barca won a record-extending 15th Spanish Super Cup.

Arsenal battle to beat Manchester Utd, world champions Chelsea held at home by Palace
LONDON: Arsenal鈥檚 quest for Premier League glory got off to a winning start as Riccardo Calafiori鈥檚 goal beat Manchester United 1-0 on Sunday, while world champions Chelsea were lucky to escape with a 0-0 draw against Crystal Palace.
After finishing second for the past three seasons, the pressure is on Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta to deliver the club鈥檚 first league title since 2003/04.
The Gunners were far from impressive at Old Trafford but earned a huge three points thanks to a glaring error from United鈥檚 stand-in goalkeeper Altay Bayindir.
The Turkish international flapped at Declan Rice鈥檚 corner on 13 minutes, presenting Calafiori with the simple task of heading into an empty net.
United gave debuts to all of their new 拢200 million ($271 million) attacking trident of Matheus Cunha, Bryan Mbeumo and Benjamin Sesko but could not find a way past the Premier League鈥檚 best defense for the past two seasons.
Patrick Dorgu came closest to an equalizer when the Dane smashed against the post from long range.
It was a tale of the two goalkeepers as Arsenal stopper David Raya also produced fine saves to deny Cunha and Mbeumo a perfect start to their United careers.
Chelsea suffered a Club World Cup hangover as they were kept at bay by FA Cup winners Palace.
The Eagles were denied an early opener when Eberechi Eze鈥檚 free-kick was ruled out by a VAR review for Marc Guehi obstructing the Chelsea wall.
New Chelsea signing Estevao came closest to snatching a winner for the home side, but the newly-crowned world champions were blunt in attack against a well-organized Palace defense.
Palace鈥檚 key duo of Guehi and Eze started despite mounting speculation the England internationals are set to join Liverpool and Tottenham, respectively.
鈥淎s long as they are 100 percent committed, they will play as they are so good,鈥 said Palace boss Oliver Glasner.
鈥淭hey didn鈥檛 just show they are great footballers, but they are great persons and that鈥檚 what I expected.鈥
Chelsea鈥檚 demolition of European champions Paris Saint-Germain in the Club World Cup final last month had raised the Blues鈥 hopes they can challenge for a first Premier League title since 2017.
But Enzo Maresca bemoaned his side鈥檚 lack of preparation time since beating PSG in New York just 35 days ago.
鈥淭hey played about eight (pre-season) games, we played just two so we tried our best,鈥 said the Italian.
鈥淲e expected a tough game. Apart from the first half free-kick, we didn鈥檛 concede any chances.鈥
Nottingham Forest made light of manager Nuno Espirito Santo鈥檚 pre-season fears over a lack of signings with a dominant 3-1 win over a much-changed Brentford.
Chris Wood struck twice either side of Dan Ndyoe鈥檚 debut goal for Forest on a nightmare afternoon for new Brentford boss Keith Andrews.
鈥淚t was a very good first half. The combinations were really good, beautiful goals,鈥 said Nuno.
鈥淭his is why we are insisting on a good balanced squad that gives us options and solutions.鈥
The Bees have lost their manager, captain and top scorer in the off-season.
Thomas Frank left to take charge of Tottenham, Mbeumo got his dream move to Manchester United and Arsenal secured Christian Norgaard.
Yoane Wissa was also missing from the Brentford squad ahead of an expected move to Newcastle.
Igor Thiago鈥檚 first goal for the club from the penalty spot late on was the only consolation for the visitors.
鈥淚 do have genuine belief but we have to take responsibility for a first half that wasn鈥檛 good enough,鈥 said Andrews.

RIYADH: Rising British boxing talent Moses Itauma lit up Riyadh this on Saturday night with a stunning performance, dispatching veteran Dillian Whyte in under a minute.

Itauma ended the heavyweight clash in just 50 seconds of the opening round, unleashing a relentless barrage of punches that forced the referee to stop the contest and declare him winner by knockout.

The bout, which began with the Saudi national anthem, was staged at anb Arena as part of the Esports World Cup, and drew a packed crowd who witnessed one of the year鈥檚 most anticipated heavyweight showdowns.

Despite the difference in experience, Itauma showed supreme confidence and dominance from the opening bell, proving his ability to stand among the sport鈥檚 elite. Whyte, meanwhile, struggled with Itauma鈥檚 speed and pressure, unable to regain control before the stoppage.

With this emphatic victory, Itauma continues to build on his undefeated record, underlining his status as one of the most exciting young stars in global boxing. For Whyte, the loss marks a difficult chapter in his career.

The evening opened with a thrilling performance from Saudi boxer Mohammed Alakel, who secured a first-round knockout victory against Younam Santosh Singh, registering the fifth win of his professional career.

In the second fight, featherweight standout Raymond Ford claimed a unanimous decision victory over Abraham Nova, signaling his return to championship contention with a composed and balanced display throughout the bout.

The third contest brought together Croatia鈥檚 Filip Hrgovic and Britain鈥檚 David Adeleye in a ten-round battle described as one of the greatest recent heavyweight clashes. Despite Adeleye鈥檚 power and resilience, Hrgovic鈥檚 experience proved decisive as he secured a unanimous decision after a dramatic encounter filled with knockdowns and relentless action until the final bell.

In the fourth fight, Japan鈥檚 Hayato Tsutsumi delivered a spectacular performance, flooring Britain鈥檚 Qais Ashfaq in the second round before sealing a knockout victory early in the third, maintaining his undefeated record.

The excitement continued in the fifth bout as Britain鈥檚 Nick Ball retained his WBA featherweight title after a grueling 12-round battle with Sam Goodman, remaining the only reigning male world champion from Great Britain.

Alcaraz to face defending champ Sinner in Cincinnati ATP final

Alcaraz to face defending champ Sinner in Cincinnati ATP final

CINCINNATI: World number one Jannik Sinner and hot rival Carlos Alcaraz will face off in a major final for the fourth time this season after both booked straight-set wins into the title match at the ATP-WTA Cincinnati Open on Saturday.

Defending champion Sinner ruthlessly subdued 136th-ranked qualifier Terence Atmane 7-6 (7/4), 6-2 while Spanish second seed Alcaraz defeated an ailing Alexander Zverev, who was suffering badly from the 32 Celsius heat and humidity, by 6-4, 6-3.

Alcaraz and Sinner have played for trophies this season in Rome, Roland Garros and Wimbledon, with the Italian winning their most recent at the All England Club last month.

Sinner, celebrating his 24th birthday, ended Frenchman Atmane鈥檚 dream run and will now try to become the first man since Roger Federer in 2014-15 to win back-to-back titles in Cincinnati.

Sinner, tuning up for the US Open in his first tournament since winning Wimbledon, hasn鈥檛 dropped a set en route to the final.

鈥淚t鈥檚 a very, very tough challenge every time you play a new opponent,鈥 Sinner said. 鈥淚n the later stages of the tournament, the pressure is on, they deserve to be there.鈥

Alcaraz will also be playing in his second Cincy final after losing to Novak Djokovic in 2023.

The Spaniard increased his ATP season match win lead to 53 in a year of five titles.

Alcaraz broke Zverev once in the opening set to claim it before the German, who is diabetic, began feeling poorly and took a medical timeout off court after the third game of the second set.

Zverev, who has retired in only two matches since 2014, came back out to finish what was a patchy match from Alcaraz, who double-faulted for times in the second game of the second set but won the last 12 points with Zverev running on fumes.

鈥淲e started well with good rallies, a good level,鈥 Alcaraz said. 鈥淎ll of a sudden, he felt bad and I was thinking more about how he was feeling instead of playing good tennis.

鈥淚t was tough and I just wish him all the best.鈥

Alcaraz said he is keen to try and take his Wimbledon revenge on Sinner in the unorthodox Monday final.

鈥淲e always bring our best tennis. We raise each other鈥檚 level. I鈥檓 ready to take the challenge,鈥 Alcaraz said.

鈥淚 will try and adjust my game better and correct what I did wrong in our last match. I want to be ready with my 100 percent. Mentally I鈥檒l be ready 鈥 I鈥檓 excited for Monday.鈥

Atmane gave birthday boy Sinner a Pokemon card shortly before they went on court, but he was in a less giving mood once they were underway.

But Sinner surrendered just three points in his first six service games as they went to the tiebreaker with neither man facing a break point.

Atmane double faulted on the first point of the decider and Sinner was away, powering to a 5-2 lead and pocketing the set at his second opportunity.

鈥淢y experience helped in the first set,鈥 he said. 鈥淚鈥檓 very happy to go through to another final.

鈥淚 tried to focus on myself, how I usually play, and then try to adapt a little bit to his game style,鈥 Sinner said. 鈥淎nd that鈥檚 exactly what I did today.

鈥淭he pressure was on me. That鈥檚 normal in the position where I am in 鈥 he was ready to fight.鈥

鈥淢y goal has always been the US Open, But we have put in the work here, in the gym and in practice. I just hope to be ready for New York.鈥

Sinner showed a first sign of vulnerability as he needed five game points to hold serve in the opening game of the second set.

But that was the closest look Atmane got at his serve, and Sinner broke the Frenchman for a 3-1 lead and again to seal the match.

Atmane, who is projected to crack the top 70 in the world rankings, became Sinner鈥檚 22nd straight French victim since May 2021, when he lost to Arthur Rinderknech in Lyon.

  • Even after a two game absence it was no surprise that Messi led his team to victory
  • He had been training with the team since midweek and coach Javier Mascherano confirmed he would be available for the weekend match

FORT LAUDERDALE: Lionel Messi returned from injury for Inter Miami to chants of 鈥淢essi! Messi! Messi!鈥 in a 3-1 win over the the LA Galaxy on Saturday.
It was the magic defender Maximiliano Falc贸n said the team has come to expect.
鈥淲e鈥檙e used to this. You saw what he did, got the ball with a clear look at goal and scored,鈥 Falc贸n said in Spanish.
Even after a two game absence it was no surprise that Messi, MLS鈥 top goal scorer, led Inter Miami to victory. He had been training with the team since midweek and coach Javier Mascherano confirmed he would be available for the weekend match.
The Argentine superstar put in a 45 minute shift and his countryman Rodrigo de Paul assisted him as they beat the worst team in MLS. The two world champions did not participate in pregame warmups, but they did warm up before they entered the game at halftime to the raucous cheers of Miami fans.
Messi injured his hamstring on Aug. 2 against Necaxa in a Leagues Cup match. Inter Miami reached the Leagues Cup quarterfinals without him, but were defeated by instate rivals Orlando City 4-1 in MLS action.
Besides his ability, it鈥檚 Messi鈥檚 competitive attitude that transcends this Miami squad according to Mascherano.
鈥淗e wants to play every single game. He wanted to play in Orlando also. You have to understand why Leo is Leo, because he always wants to be on the pitch,鈥 Mascherano said after the win over Galaxy.
Messi鈥檚 return comes at an important time, before his squad takes on eight-time Mexican champions Tigres UANL in South Florida on Wednesday. LA Galaxy, the reigning 2024 MLS Cup Champions, also looked at this Saturday鈥檚 game as a chance to rotate their squad ahead of their Leagues Cup quarterfinal match against C.F. Pachuca.
