  • New Lebanese president hails Kingdom鈥檚 鈥榟istorical role in supporting Lebanon鈥
  • Macron to Berri: 鈥榃e are committed to supporting Lebanon and implementing ceasefire agreement鈥
  • Al-Sharaa to Mikati: 鈥榃e are committed to building positive relations with Lebanon based on mutual respect, sovereignty of both nations鈥

BEIRUT: New Lebanese President Joseph Aoun鈥檚 first official overseas trip will be to 黑料社区, he said on Saturday.

It came during during a phone call with Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, the president鈥檚 office said.

The crown prince called to congratulate Aoun and invited him to visit the Kingdom, the Lebanese presidency and Saudi Press Agency said.

Aoun said that 黑料社区 would be his first destination 鈥渋n recognition of the Kingdom鈥檚 historical role in supporting Lebanon and standing in solidarity with it, and as an affirmation of Lebanon鈥檚 deep Arab identity as the foundation of its relations with its regional surroundings,鈥 his office said.

During the call, the crown prince conveyed King Salman鈥檚 and his congratulations on Aoun鈥檚 election and his swearing-in as president.

The crown prince wished 鈥渟uccess to Aoun and the brotherly Lebanese people, as well as further progress and prosperity.鈥

Aoun thanked the crown prince for 黑料社区鈥檚 stances toward Lebanon and its people.

In his first statement after assuming office, Aoun told visitors on Saturday that he 鈥渄id not come to engage in politics but to build a state that can only be established on justice and equality among all its components, which share one identity.鈥

Speaking to a delegation from Dar Al-Fatwa headed by Grand Mufti Sheikh Abdel Latif Derian, Aoun said: 鈥淭he responsibility does not lie solely on me, and this is not just my term; it is the term of every Lebanese, regardless of their position or sect.

鈥淲e have great and numerous opportunities, and the world has begun discussing conferences in support of Lebanon, but it depends on us to demonstrate to these countries the extent of our credibility in building the state.

鈥淲e are not building a state for sects; Lebanon as a state protects everyone; the state of sects does not ensure protection.鈥

Aoun added: 鈥淭here are no winners or losers; rather, we have a great opportunity that we either seize or lose.

鈥淲e have seen what has happened recently, and everyone has been affected. This country, its people and future generations have suffered enough.鈥

Aoun expressed his hope that the new government would be formed as quickly as possible, 鈥渁llowing us to begin building bridges of trust with the outside world.鈥

He said: 鈥淲e must seek the assistance of the outside world, not use it to gain strength against our people. No sect or individual is superior to another.鈥

In his speech, Grand Mufti Derian thanked the Arab and friendly states that helped Lebanon 鈥渆merge from the dark tunnel and end the presidential vacancy.鈥

He said: 鈥淲e are an essential component of the state, and what we seek is to achieve a balance between the components of Lebanese society.

鈥淲e want to feel that we live in a state governed by justice, law, the constitution and the Taif Agreement,鈥 he added.

In Damascus, Caretaker Prime Minister Najib Mikati held talks on his first official visit to Syria following the fall of Bashar Assad鈥檚 regime.

He held an extensive meeting with the leader of the new administration, Ahmad Al-Sharaa.

Al-Sharaa told a press conference at the People鈥檚 Palace: 鈥淲e are giving ourselves an opportunity to build positive relations in the upcoming stages based on the sovereignty of Lebanon and Syria.

鈥淲e will maintain neutrality toward all parties in Lebanon and will try to resolve issues.

鈥淭he priority for Syria at this time is to ensure the security of the nation and to confine weapons to the hands of the Syrian state.鈥

He said: 鈥淥ur objective is to establish positive relations between the Syrian and Lebanese peoples based on mutual respect, and the sovereignty of both countries, and Syria will strive to address all issues through dialogue.鈥

Al-Sharaa鈥檚 meeting with Mikati focused on smuggling and Syrian deposits in Lebanese banks, he added.

鈥淲e also raised the issue of demarcating the borders between the two countries.鈥

Mikati called for 鈥渁ctivating the relations between the two countries based on the national sovereignty of each and working to prevent anything that could harm the relationship.

鈥淪yria represents Lebanon鈥檚 natural gateway to the Arab world, and as long as it is well, Lebanon will also be well,鈥 he added.

The caretaker prime minister also addressed the issue of Syrian refugees in Lebanon, describing it as an 鈥渦rgent matter.鈥

Lebanon must 鈥減romptly and facilitate their return to Syria, as this matter exerts significant pressure on Lebanon, and I have sensed an understanding of this situation,鈥 Mikati said.

Meanwhile, Parliament Speaker Nabih Berri received a phone call from French President Emmanuel Macron, who congratulated him on the election of the president.

Macron highlighted France鈥檚 commitment to 鈥渃ontinuing its support for Lebanon in all fields, especially the Lebanese army, and to implementing the ceasefire agreement in southern Lebanon.鈥

He said that he would visit Lebanon 鈥渧ery soon.鈥

President Aoun received congratulatory messages on his election from Kuwait鈥檚 Emir Sheikh Meshal Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah, who highlighted his 鈥渒eenness to strengthen the historic and distinguished relations between the two countries,鈥 as well as UAE President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al-Nahyan; UAE Vice President and Prime Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al-Maktoum; UAE Vice President Sheikh Mansour bin Zayed Al-Nahyan; and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan.

In southern Lebanon, the Lebanese army began redeploying in the towns of Al-Qaouzah, the outskirts of Ramyeh, Tayr Harfa, Wadi Ain Al-Zarqa and Al-Batishiyeh in Tyre district after the Israeli army withdrew as part of the ceasefire agreement with Hezbollah.

The army is expected to complete its deployment in the towns of Yaroun, Maroun Al-Ras, Aitaroun, Blida, Mays Al-Jabal, Houla, Markaba and Odaisseh this week.

Israeli forces that had infiltrated the area carried out an operation involving the demolition of several houses in the town of Aita Al-Shaab in the Bint Jbeil district.

  • Jordan was one of the first countries to establish a relief corridor
  • JHCO has dispatched 201 land convoys, providing food, medical supplies

LONDON: The Jordan Hashemite Charity Organization remains dedicated to its humanitarian and relief operations in the Gaza Strip, two years on from the start of Israeli hostilities in the region.

Jordan was one of the first countries to establish a relief corridor to Gaza, coordinating with various entities, including the Jordanian Armed Forces, the Royal Jordanian Air Force, and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Secretary-General of the JHCO Hussein Shibli said: 鈥淛ordan has been and continues to be the humanitarian safety valve for our people in Gaza.

鈥淥ver the past two years we have worked as part of an integrated national effort under Hashemite leadership to link Jordan鈥檚 charitable will with the needs of the Palestinian people in the most difficult circumstances.鈥

The JHCO has dispatched 201 land convoys to Gaza over the past two years, delivering a total of 8,664 trucks filled with food, medical supplies, and shelter materials. These have benefited hundreds of thousands of Palestinian families, according to the Jordan News Agency.

In addition, 53 relief aircraft have delivered over 530 tonnes of essential supplies to El-Arish Airport in Egypt, bound for Gaza, along with 564 direct airdrops conducted by 102 helicopters.

Jordan has also launched several initiatives, including the water supply project, which has provided over 21,000 liters of potable water to Palestinians in Gaza, and the hot meals project, which has distributed about 1.5 million meals. Other initiatives include the Jordanian Campaign and the Al Monasara Islamic Zakat Committee for Palestinian People.

The Restoring Hope initiative has provided 637 prosthetic limbs to the wounded, while flour and bakery projects, along with the Eid Al-Adha program, have supported thousands of Palestinian families who have also been recipients of tents and shelter supplies.

The JHCO has signed 177 agreements to deliver about 123,400 tonnes of humanitarian aid to Gaza, in coordination with local and international partners, the charity said on Tuesday.

  • Morocco is expected to import 5.5 million tons of soft wheat
  • Morocco has reported below-average harvests in recent years because of drought

CASABLANCA: French wheat exporters will supply Morocco with two thirds of its soft wheat needs, or 3.5 million metric tons, in the 2025-2026 season, Philippe Heusele, international head at French grain industry group Intercereales, said on Tuesday.
Morocco is expected to import 5.5 million tons of soft wheat, its main staple, this market year from June to the end of May 2026, according to estimates by Moroccan traders and French grains association Synacomex.
Morocco has reported below-average harvests in recent years because of drought. This season it reported a soft wheat harvest of 2.4 million tons.
Despite the weak domestic harvest, stockpiles remain at a 鈥渃omfortable level,鈥 covering more than three months of industrial millers鈥 needs, said Abdelkader Alaoui, president of the FNM industrial milling federation.
Moroccan traders attending an Intercereales conference in Casablanca see the French harvest as best positioned, given its availability and proximity to Moroccan ports compared with other origins such as the Black Sea region and Argentina.
鈥淲e are also looking at Russian, German and Polish wheat as well as Argentina, where prices are interesting,鈥 said Omar Yacoubi, head of FNCL, Morocco鈥檚 grain traders federation.
From June to September, Morocco imported 1.5 million tons of soft wheat, including 996,368 tons from France, followed by the United States (94,688 tons), Russia (85,499 tons) and Lithuania (63,000 tons), FNCL data shows.

  • Israeli strikes on southern Lebanon killed two people on Tuesday, according to the Lebanese health ministry, with Israel saying it had targeted members of Hezbollah

BERIUT: 鈥 Israeli strikes on southern Lebanon killed two people on Tuesday, according to the Lebanese health ministry, with Israel saying it had targeted members of Hezbollah.
Israel has repeatedly bombed Lebanon despite a November ceasefire that followed more than a year of hostilities with the Iran-backed militant group that culminated in two months of open war.
The health ministry said in a statement that an 鈥淚sraeli drone strike鈥 on an excavator in Yater killed one person.
It also reported a separate air strike on Deir Aames, which killed one person and wounded another.
The Israeli military said in a statement that it had killed Mahmud Ali Issa in Deir Aames, alleging he was 鈥渞esponsible for the financial and military connections between Hezbollah and the residents of the village.鈥
It also said it killed a Hezbollah member who 鈥渙perated an engineering vehicle in the Zibqin area,鈥 near Yater, accusing him of trying to 鈥渞eestablish Hezbollah terror infrastructure sites.鈥
Israel carries out strikes in southern Lebanon on a near-daily basis, usually saying it is targeting Hezbollah.
The United Nations said last week it had verified the deaths of 103 civilians in Lebanon since the November truce, demanding a halt to the ongoing suffering.
Tuesday鈥檚 attacks follow an Israeli strike the day before that killed a man who had been previously wounded and lost his sight when Israel blew up hundreds of pagers and walkie-talkies used by Hezbollah members last year. The man鈥檚 wife was also killed in the strike.
Hezbollah, which was severely weakened by the war, faces a push to give up its arsenal.
Under intense US and Israeli pressure, Lebanon鈥檚 government is seeking to disarm the group, and the Lebanese army has drawn up a plan to do so beginning in the country鈥檚 south.

  • Patriarch Bechara Boutros Ra茂, leader of Lebanon鈥檚 Maronite Church, said Lebanon awaited the pope鈥檚 visit with 鈥済reat joy and renewed hope鈥

VATICAN CITY: Pope Leo XIV will visit Turkiye and Lebanon next month on the first foreign trip of his papacy, the Vatican announced on Tuesday.
The trip offers a symbolically important gesture to Christians and Muslims as a pilgrimage to two countries that the pope鈥檚 predecessor, Francis, had planned to visit.
The Vatican said Leo will visit Turkiye from Nov. 27-30, and Lebanon from Nov. 30 to Dec. 2. The trip to Turkiye will include a pilgrimage to Iznik to mark the 1,700th anniversary of the Council of Nicea, Christianity鈥檚 first ecumenical council.

The anniversary is an important moment in Catholic-Orthodox relations, since the 325 A.D. Nicea meeting predates the schisms that divided Christianity鈥檚 East from West and is accepted by Catholic and Orthodox churches alike.
Francis had planned to mark it with his own trip to Turkiye in May at the invitation of Patriarch Bartholomew I, the spiritual leader of the world鈥檚 Orthodox Christians. Francis died in April, and Leo said from the start of his pontificate that he intended to fulfill Francis鈥 plans.
Lebanon鈥檚 President Joseph Aoun announced the pope鈥檚 trip on X, but provided only the dates. The Vatican said the trip itinerary will be released at a later date.
Christian community in Lebanon
The trip, announced on the anniversary of the Oct. 7 Hamas attacks in southern Israel, will give the first American pope a chance to speak in broad terms about peace in the Middle East and the plight of Christians there.
Leo has consistently called for peace and dialogue in the Middle East, especially as Israel鈥檚 offensive rages on in Gaza.
Francis had long hoped to visit Lebanon, but the country鈥檚 political and economic instability prevented a visit during his lifetime. The Mediterranean nation of around 6 million, including more than 1 million Syrian and Palestinian refugees, has the largest percentage of Christians in the Middle East and is the only Arab country with a Christian head of state.
However, the Vatican fears the country鈥檚 instability has been particularly dangerous for the continued presence of its Christian community, a bulwark for the church in the Mideast.
Lebanon is currently struggling to recover after years of economic crisis and a bruising war between Israel and the Lebanese militant group Hezbollah that ended with a US and France-brokered ceasefire in November. Formation of a new, reformist government ended a two-year political vacuum and brought hopes of recovery but the situation remains tense.
Israel has continued to occupy five strategic points on the Lebanese side of the border and carry out near-daily airstrikes that it says aim to stop Hezbollah from regrouping. Hezbollah is under increasing domestic and international pressure to give up its remaining arsenal but has refused to do so until Israel withdraws and halts its strikes. There are fears of civil conflict if Lebanese authorities attempt to forcibly disarm the group.
鈥橝 sign of unity for all鈥
Patriarch Bechara Boutros Ra茂, leader of Lebanon鈥檚 Maronite Church, said Lebanon awaited the pope鈥檚 visit with 鈥済reat joy and renewed hope.鈥
鈥淲e hope that this apostolic visit to Lebanon will bring peace and stability and be a sign of unity for all Lebanese, Christians and Muslims alike, at this critical stage in our nation鈥檚 history,鈥 he said in a statement.
The last pope to visit Lebanon was Pope Benedict XVI in September 2012 on what was the last foreign trip of his papacy.
About one-third of Lebanon鈥檚 population is believed to be Christian, though there is no official number since there hasn鈥檛 been an official census since 1932. The Maronites are the largest and most powerful sect and, by convention, Lebanon鈥檚 president is always a Maronite Christian.
Tightrope over Mideast issues
The pope鈥檚 trip was announced as Israel marked the anniversary of the Oct. 7 attacks and criticized the Vatican for what it considered to be problematic comments about the anniversary by the Vatican鈥檚 top diplomat.
In an interview with Vatican Media, Cardinal Pietro Parolin had condemned the 鈥渋nhuman massacre鈥 of innocent people in Israel by Hamas and the rise of antisemitism. But he also said Israel鈥檚 razing of Gaza was itself a disproportionate massacre, and called on countries to stop supplying Israel weapons to wage the war.
In a statement Tuesday on X, the Israeli Embassy to the Holy See said Parolin鈥檚 interview, 鈥渢hough surely well-intentioned, risks undermining efforts to both end the war in Gaza and counter rising antisemitism.鈥
It criticized his 鈥減roblematic use of moral equivalence鈥 by referring to massacres on both sides.
The criticism underscored the diplomatic tightrope the Vatican and Leo have to walk when wading into Mideast issues while trying to maintain the Holy See鈥檚 tradition of diplomatic neutrality.

Gaza peace talks enter second day on two-year anniversary of the beginning of the war
  • On Monday, an Egyptian official said the parties agreed on most first-phase terms, including releasing hostages and establishing a ceasefire
  • The plan envisions Israel withdrawing its troops and an international security force taking over

CAIRO: Peace talks between Israel and Hamas were resuming at an Egyptian resort city on Tuesday, the two-year anniversary of the militant group鈥檚 surprise attack on Israel that triggered the bloody conflict that has seen tens of thousands of Palestinians killed in Gaza.
The second day of indirect negotiations in the Red Sea resort of Sharm el-Sheikh are focused on a plan proposed by US President Donald Trump last week that aims to bring about an end to the war in Gaza.
After several hours of talks Monday, an Egyptian official with knowledge of the discussions said the parties agreed on most of the first-phase terms, which include the release of hostages and establishing a ceasefire. The official spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss the private meetings.
The plan has received widespread international backing and Trump told reporters on Monday that he thought there was a 鈥渞eally good chance鈥 of a 鈥渓asting deal.鈥
鈥淭his is beyond Gaza,鈥 he said. 鈥淕aza is a big deal, but this is really peace in the Middle East.鈥
Trump鈥檚 peace plan
Many uncertainties remain, however, including the demand that Hamas disarm and the future governance of Gaza.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has long said Hamas must surrender and disarm, but Hamas has not yet commented on whether it would be willing to.
The plan envisions Israel withdrawing its troops from Gaza after Hamas disarms, and an international security force being put in place. The territory would then be placed under international governance, with Trump and former UK Prime Minister Tony Blair overseeing it.
The devastating war that has ensued has upended global politics, resulted in Israel killing 67,160 Palestinians and wounding nearly 170,000, according to Gaza鈥檚 Health Ministry, and has left the Gaza Strip in ruins.
The ministry does not differentiate between civilians and combatants, but says more than half of the deaths were women and children. The ministry is part of the Hamas-run government, and the United Nations and many independent experts consider its figures to be the most reliable estimate of wartime casualties.
A growing number of experts, including those commissioned by a UN body, have said Israel鈥檚 offensive in the Gaza Strip amounts to genocide 鈥 an accusation Israel vehemently denies.
On Tuesday at the area attacked by Hamas two years ago, thousands of Israelis gathered to pay tribute to their loved ones who were killed and kidnapped. An explosion from Gaza echoed across the fields as they reflected, following the launch of a rocket in northern Gaza. No damage or injuries were reported.
In Gaza City, meantime, residents said Israeli attacks continued until the early hours of the morning on Tuesday, though there were no immediate reports of casualties.
A promise of humanitarian relief
Ahead of the resumption of talks on Tuesday, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres called for an end to the hostilities, which have created 鈥渁 humanitarian catastrophe on a scale that defied comprehension.鈥
鈥淭he recent proposal by US President Donald J. Trump presents an opportunity that must be seized to bring this tragic conflict to an end,鈥 Guterres said.
鈥淎 permanent ceasefire and a credible political process are essential to prevent further bloodshed and pave the way for peace. International law must be respected.鈥
Mediators from Qatar and Egypt were facilitating the talks, meeting first on Monday with members of the delegation from Hamas, then later with those from Israel.
Israel鈥檚 delegation included Gal Hirsch, coordinator for the hostages and the missing from Netanyahu鈥檚 office, while Hamas representatives included Khalil Al-Hayya, the group鈥檚 top negotiator.
White House spokesperson Karoline Leavitt said Monday that US envoy Steve Witkoff and Trump鈥檚 son-in-law Jared Kushner were on hand to talk part in the talks and keep the president apprised.
She did not comment on a specific deadline for concluding the talks, but said it is important 鈥渢hat we get this done quickly.鈥
Part of the plan is to surge humanitarian aid into Gaza, where more than two million Palestinian are facing hunger and in some areas famine.
UN spokesman Stephane Dujarric said the organization was poised and ready to act.
鈥淭he machinery is cranked up and ready to go as soon as we get the green light,鈥 Dujarric said. 鈥淭here are many thousands of metric tons in the pipeline of goods ready to enter鈥 from Jordan, the Israeli port of Ashdod and elsewhere, he added.
