黑料社区鈥檚 greatest World Cup moments

黑料社区鈥檚 greatest World Cup moments
  • Al-Owairan received the ball inside his own half and embarked on an astonishing run that saw one Belgian defender after another beaten, before finishing past Michel Preud鈥檋omme
  • Saleh Al-Shehri equalized straight after the break and just five minutes later Salem Dawsari sent Saudi and Arab fans wild with one of the tournament鈥檚 most stunning goals

DUBAI: 黑料社区 has taken part in six World Cup tournaments, an Arab record it shares with Morocco and Tunisia. Here are our favorite Green Falcons moments from football鈥檚 grandest stage.

5. Saudi defeat Egypt to end winless streak (Russia 2018)

黑料社区 returned to the World Cup after an absence of 12 years at Russia 2018 and while there would be no progress from the group stage as there was in the Green Falcons鈥 debut at USA 1994, there was a first win since that tournament 24 years earlier.

Saudi suffered a painful 5-0 defeat against the hosts on the opening day of the tournament and followed that up with a narrow 1-0 loss against Uruguay. It meant that while the final Group A match against fellow Arab qualifiers Egypt was a dead rubber, pride was very much still at stake.

Mohamed Salah, after a stellar season for Liverpool, gave Egypt a 1-0 lead, but deep into stoppage time at the end of the first half, Salman Al-Faraj equalized from the penalty spot.

As the clock passed the 90-minute mark it looked like both teams would be heading home without a win, but Salem Al-Dawsari scored in the 95th minute to make it 2-1 and end the Green Falcon鈥檚 15-match winless World Cup streak.

4. Almost a perfect send-off for Sami Al-Jaber (Germany 2006)

It was almost the ideal end for arguably 黑料社区鈥檚 greatest ever footballer.

The 2006 World Cup in Germany may not have ended up being too fondly remembered by Saudi fans but it did provide an early moment which hinted at a repeat of the team鈥檚 1994 heroics.

The Green Falcons鈥 opening match against Tunisia at the Allianz Arena in Munich saw the North African team take the lead from Ziad Jaziri after only 23 minutes but the Saudis struck back with a fine finish by Yasser Al-Qahtani on 57 minutes.

Enter Al-Jaber. Wearing his favored No. 9 green shirt, he was introduced as a substitute after 82 minutes and within moments he was bearing down on Tunisian goalkeeper Ali Boumnijel with the goal at his mercy. Al-Jaber did not disappoint, scoring Saudi鈥檚 second before being mobbed by his ecstatic teammates.

Unfortunately for the team managed by Marcos Paqueta, Tunisia equalized in the dying seconds and Saudi went on to lose their next two matches against Ukraine and Spain.

But at least Al-Jaber鈥檚 fourth and last World Cup had ended like his first, with a goal for his beloved 黑料社区.

3. Al-Ghesheyan stunner gives Saudi a fleeting dream (US 1994)

黑料社区 had already created history by progressing from the group stages at the US World Cup in 1994 and their reward was a round of 16 clash with Sweden, who would end up being one of the teams of the tournament.

In the stifling heat of Cotton Bowl in Dallas, the Green Falcons, fresh off a stunning win over Belgium in their previous match, put on brave display but found themselves two goals down after an early header from Martin Dahlin and a strike from Kennet Andersson six minutes after the break.

Just as it looked like an exhausted team was only minutes from heading home, up popped substitute Fahad Al-Ghesheyan to breathe life into 黑料社区鈥檚 World Cup campaign and allow the fans to dream again.

The 21-year-old collected the ball inside the Swedish penalty area and unleashed a right-foot strike into the roof of the net five minutes from time to suddenly give Saudi hope of a stunning comeback.

But just two minutes later, Andersson scored his second to give Sweden a 3-1 win and eliminate the Falcons from the competition. They had become the first Arab nation to reach the last 16 in their first attempt and no team from the region would progress further until 2022.

2. Al-Owairan scores one of the World Cup鈥檚 greatest goals (USA 1994)

To Diego Maradona鈥檚 iconic solo goal against England in 1986 and Roberto Baggio鈥檚 international career-launching strike against Czechoslovakia in 1990, you can add Saeed Al-Owairan鈥檚 remarkable winner against Belgium in 1994.

黑料社区鈥檚 debut at the World Cup had ended with a 2-1 loss to reigning European champions the Netherlands at the RFK Stadium in Washington D.C., but in their second Group F match, they managed an excellent 2-1 win over Morocco at the Giants Stadium in New York.

It meant that progress to the last 16 would depend on their result against Belgium, and the Green Falcons would go on to record one of their greatest ever results back at the RFK.

Only five minutes into the match, Al-Owairan received the ball inside his own half and embarked on an astonishing run that saw one Belgian defender after another beaten, before the forward finished past stranded goalkeeper Michel Preud鈥檋omme.

The stunned Belgians had no answer to that goal in the next 85 minutes. 黑料社区, in their first World Cup, were heading to the last 16 and Al-Owairan had written his name alongside the World Cup greats.

1. Saudi claim greatest win over Messi鈥檚 Argentina (Qatar 2022)

There can be few debates about 黑料社区鈥檚 greatest World Cup moment.

Few people would have given Herve Renard鈥檚 team much hope of a victory when they took on Lionel Messi and Argentina at Lusail Stadium on Nov. 22, 2022.

And sure enough it was the Argentine maestro who gave the South Americans the lead on 10 minutes from the penalty spot. But the expected Argentinian procession did not materialize. Instead, the Falcons, through gritty defending and smart counterattacks, slowly grew into the game.

The second half would be a revelation. First Saleh Al-Shehri equalized straight after the break and just five minutes later Salem Dawsari sent Saudi and Arab fans in the stadium and around the world wild with one of the tournament鈥檚 most stunning goals.

Messi and his colleagues would go on to win the World Cup, but that day they had no answer to 黑料社区鈥檚 tigerish performance.

There would be no progress from the group stage for the Falcons, but the 2-1 scoreline gave them their most famous victory and they would end the tournament as the eventual world champions鈥 only conquerors.

  • The star names drew big crowds but the chemistry between Italians Errani and Vavassori, cultivated over a two-year on-court partnership that also saw them win the French Open title this year, proved decisive
  • Vavassori admitted he and Errani were on a 鈥渕ission鈥 to prove themselves against the singles stars

NEW YORK CITY : Sara Errani and Andrea Vavassori retained their US Open mixed doubles title on Wednesday, beating Iga Swiatek and Casper Ruud to claim the $1 million top prize in the new-look competition that kicked off action at the last Grand Slam of the year.

The Italians capped two days of intense work in the 16-team event with a 6-3, 5-7, 10-6 victory over Swiatek and Ruud 鈥 who were among a slew of singles stars drawn not only by the big purse but also by the chance to contest mixed doubles before singles action begins on Sunday.

Poland鈥檚 Swiatek, a six-time Grand Slam champion ranked second in the world, battled through a two-hour tussle with Jasmine Paolini to win the Cincinnati Open on Monday then hot-footed it to New York to team up with Norway鈥檚 Ruud in the revamped competition.

Carlos Alcaraz, men鈥檚 champion in Cincinnati, also turned out but he and British playing partner Emma Raducanu were eliminated on Tuesday, as was superstar Novak Djokovic, who teamed with fellow Serb Olga Danilovic.

The star names drew big crowds but the chemistry between Italians Errani and Vavassori, cultivated over a two-year on-court partnership that also saw them win the French Open title this year, proved decisive.

Errani hoped it showed that committed doubles teams 鈥 many of whom were shut out of the field 鈥 have plenty to offer.

鈥淚 think this one is also for all the doubles players that couldn鈥檛 play this tournament,鈥 Errani said as she and Vavassori accepted the trophy. 鈥淚 think this one is also for them.鈥

Errani and Vavassori roared to a 4-1 lead in the opening set of the championship match and after Swiatek and Ruud regained one break, closed it on a confident hold from Vavassori.

Down a break at 4-5 in the second, Swiatek and Ruud won three straight games to force the 10-point match tiebreaker.

The Italians grabbed a 4-0 lead in the tiebreaker and held on.

鈥淐ongratulations,鈥 Swiatek said at the trophy presentation. 鈥淵ou proved that, I guess, mixed doubles players are smarter tactically than singles players.

鈥淏ut we pushed until the end. We tried to make it competitive.鈥

The first three rounds 鈥 including the semifinals on Wednesday night 鈥 were played with short sets with no-advantage scoring and a 10-point match tiebreak in lieu of a third set, before the final reverted to traditional sets with a 10-point match tiebreak.

Swiatek and Ruud had clawed their way past top seeds Jessica Pegula and Jack Draper with a 3-5, 5-3, 10-8 semifinal victory, winning the last six points to advance.

Errani and Vavassori romped past the American duo Danielle Collins and Christian Harrison 4-2, 4-2 to reach the final.

Vavassori admitted he and Errani were on a 鈥渕ission鈥 to prove themselves against the singles stars.

But both relished the electric atmosphere under the lights on the jam-packed Arthur Ashe Stadium Court.

鈥淚t鈥檚 the court where I feel goosebumps every time here,鈥 Errani said.

Vavassori also enjoyed the 鈥渁mazing atmosphere鈥 and thanked organizers for putting mixed doubles in the spotlight.

鈥淚 have to say that we showed today that doubles is a great product,鈥 he said. 鈥淚 think it was amazing to play on this court with so many people and I have to say thanks from the bottom of my heart for the atmosphere.鈥

  • Fifteen-year-old phenom Aphrodite Deng, a Canadian national, is also sitting at 5 under
  • World No. 1 Jeeno Thitikul of Thailand, looking for her second win of the season, recorded four birdies across Nos. 1-6 to put herself in contention

MISSISSAUGA, Ontario: Getting her first career win has not stopped Japan鈥檚 Akie Iwai from going for another, at least judging by her opening round at the CPKC Women鈥檚 Open in Mississauga, Ontario, Canada.

Fresh off a victory at the Standard Portland Classic last week, Iwai clearly wasn鈥檛 bothered by distractions as she raced to a 7-under-par 64 Thursday at Mississaugua Golf and Country Club, giving her a two-stroke advantage over the rest of the field.

The 23-year-old Iwai sank birdies on her first two holes of the tournament, played on the back nine. She followed up with birdies on Nos. 18, 4, 6, 8 and 9 to provide herself a reasonable margin for error going into Friday.

鈥淪o last week I won, but already it鈥檚 in the past, already past,鈥 Iwai said. 鈥淭hat鈥檚 why I was change the mind (for) good focus this week.鈥

The rookie shot out of the gate earlier this year, grabbing second-place finishes at Honda LPGA Thailand in February and the JM Eagle LA Championship in April.

Five golfers are tied for second at 5 under, including Megan Khang, who is back at the old stomping grounds in Canada, where she won her first LPGA title in 2023.

Khang shook off a bogey on the par-3 third to record six birdies, including back-to-back on the 12th and 13th.

鈥淚t鈥檚 always nerve-wracking coming back to a tournament you have won. Obviously, you would like to do it again,鈥 Khang said. 鈥淚t鈥檚 definitely a little cool coming in and still seeing some spots where my face is. Still catches me off guard.鈥

Fifteen-year-old phenom Aphrodite Deng, a Canadian national, is also sitting at 5 under.

The amateur closed her round with back-to-back birdies on Nos. 17 and 18 and pointed to her short game as being the reason for her strong start.

鈥淭oday my putting was really good,鈥 she said.

World No. 1 Jeeno Thitikul of Thailand, looking for her second win of the season, recorded four birdies across Nos. 1-6 to put herself in contention.

She acknowledged that playing in first tournament as No. 1 was on her mind.

鈥淚鈥檓 not going to lie saying I鈥檓 not thinking about that,鈥 Thitikul said. 鈥淏ut like to be honest, I just told myself like, you can think about it. You can be worry. You can be nerves. But like at the end of the day, you got to pass this as well.鈥

She, Khang and Deng are joined by Ireland鈥檚 Leona Maguire and Mexico鈥檚 Gaby Lopez in the tie for second.

Alone in seventh place is South Korea鈥檚 Soo Bin Joo (67). Five golfers are a stroke behind her in a tie for eighth at 3 under: South Korea鈥檚 Jeongeun Lee5, Taiwan鈥檚 Peiyun Chien, Thailand鈥檚 Ariya Jutanugarn, Japan鈥檚 Mao Saigo and Jenny Bae.

World No. 2 Nelly Korda is 2 under (T13), and 2024 winner Lauren Coughlin in a tie for 109th at 3 over.

Russell Henley birdies last 3 holes for a 61 to lead Tour Championship over Scheffler
  • Henley one-putted six of his last seven holes and made three birdie putts from 40 feet or longer
  • Rain hammered East Lake on Wednesday leaving the course soft enough that players could lift, clean and place their golf balls in the short grass

ATLANTA: Russell Henley hardly missed a putt. Scottie Scheffler hardly missed a fairway. They led a parade of players who seized on the soft conditions at East Lake to begin the race for the Tour Championship and the season-ending FedEx Cup title.

Henley one-putted six of his last seven holes and made three birdie putts from 40 feet or longer and, with three straight birdies at the end, had a 9-under 61 to build a two-shot lead over the world鈥檚 No. 1 player.

Scheffler didn鈥檛 miss a beat from last week 鈥 really the last five months 鈥 and finished with a 25-foot par save on the 16th and two birdies for a 63. That鈥檚 his lowest round by two shots in his six appearances at East Lake.

The entertainment came from Rory McIlroy, who bladed a bunker shot on the par-5 18th hole over the green and off the grandstands, and then back onto the green. He made an 18-foot putt for a most unlikely birdie.

Scheffler was rooting hard for McIlroy, not so much for the birdie but so they could avoid a length ruling to finish. Seconds after Scheffler holed his 4-foot birdie putt, the horn sounded to stop play because of approaching storms that led to East Lake being evacuated.

Left behind was a leaderboard filled with red numbers in a tournament that has a $40 million purse in official money for the top 30 players, all of them with an equal chance. Only two players were over par.

Rain hammered East Lake on Wednesday 鈥 and again after the first round ended 鈥 leaving the course soft enough that players could lift, clean and place their golf balls in the short grass.

鈥淚 felt like with it being lift, clean and place and somewhat soft compared to last year when the greens were brand new, it was a little bit softer, so it was just a little bit more gettable,鈥 Henley said.

There was also that no-so-small matter of putting. Henley already has a great reputation with the putter, and on this day he holed some 207 feet worth of putts.

鈥淧robably the most I鈥檝e ever made,鈥 he said.

Three of the five players who got in at 64 was enough to wonder which cup was on their minds. Justin Thomas, Collin Morikawa and Patrick Cantlay all finished outside the top six who qualified for the Ryder Cup and have to wait on being one of six captain鈥檚 picks.

All three are seen as likely picks.

鈥淚 don鈥檛 think you鈥檙e ever comfortable until you get that call and you鈥檙e on the team,鈥 Morikawa said. 鈥淟ook, I hope I鈥檝e done enough. We鈥檒l have to wait and see. But I think, yeah, my focus right now is to try and go out and win this golf tournament. I think if I do that, then hopefully that鈥檚 enough, and we鈥檒l see how everything plays out.鈥

Scheffler is coming off his fifth victory of the season last week at the BMW Championship and didn鈥檛 miss a step. All that slowed him was some swirling wind as the storm approached, making it a little tougher to get close for birdie chances with a wedge in hand.

The only fairway he missed 鈥 except for No. 18, in which the ball rolled through the middle into the first cut 鈥 was at the 16th, and that left him in his biggest predicament. From the rough he went down a deep swale to the right, the one place he knew to avoid.

鈥淚 knew going down there right of 16 was a huge penalty. We had talked about it in the practice rounds,鈥 he said. 鈥淎nd our job was just to get the ball back on the green, which I did, and it was nice to hole that long putt.

But it was a reminder of how key it was to keep the ball in play.

鈥淚 missed one (fairway) on 16 and all of a sudden I鈥檓 almost playing for bogey,鈥 he said. 鈥淚t鈥檚 pretty important around this place.鈥

Tommy Fleetwood, who keeps giving himself chances at his first win on the PGA Tour, also was at 66, along with BMW Championship runner-up Robert MacIntyre, who is ready for a return to Scotland given how hot has been in Memphis, Baltimore and Atlanta.

鈥淚 wear as much sun cream as I possibly can. I look like Casper the Ghost out there, to be honest. I get a lot of shouts about my sun cream,鈥 MacIntire said.

It beats the shouts he got last week at Caves Valley when he lost a four-shot lead to Scheffler in the final round and was hearing from the pro-American crowd along the way. MacIntire was as upset about how he handled the crowd as he was his golf, but figures it will be a great teaching moment for him at Bethpage Black for the Ryder Cup next month.

鈥淭here鈥檚 a couple of things that I know that I鈥檓 going to change, but do you know what it鈥檚 really going to help me for? Bethpage,鈥 he said. 鈥淚鈥檓 always going to be fiery, I鈥檓 always going to yell, swear, yell, get angry.

鈥淏ut just the way I interacted with the crowd, I was trying to keep them out of the way, but instead of doing what I did on Saturday and bringing them into it.鈥

Why fan violence still sullies Latin American football

Santiago 鈥 CHL
Santiago, Aug 21, 2025 : Images of a fan jumping from the stands to escape a beating as bottles, rocks and seats fly through the air at a game between Chilean and Argentine clubs in Buenos Aires on Wednesday highlight the enduring problem of violence in Latin American football.
Over 100 people were arrested over the bloody battles between supporters of Universidad de Chile and Argentina鈥檚 Independiente, which left 19 people injured, three seriously.
From Mexico to Argentina, Brazil, Colombia, Chile and Ecuador, stadium violence continues to mar the beautiful game in football-mad Latin America.
Here is a quick overview of the situation:
Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Honduras, Ecuador, Peru and Uruguay have all enacted laws over the past two decades to tackle hooliganism, including, in some cases, with prison sentences.
But the violence continues unabated.
So far this year in Chile, twelve matches were suspended due to violence, according to the players鈥 union.
In April, two fans died during a stampede outside a Santiago stadium before a Copa Libertadores match between local side Colo Colo and Brazil鈥檚 Fortaleza.
In Argentina, more than 100 people have died in the last 20 years, 157 in Brazil between 2009 and 2019, and 170 died in Colombia between 2001 and 2019, according to academic and NGO studies.
There鈥檚 an idea 鈥渢hat stadiums are spaces where it鈥檚 legitimate to commit acts of violence, not just physical violence, but also racism and homophobia,鈥 Argentine sociologist Diego Murze, author of the book 鈥淔ootball, Violence, and the State,鈥 told AFP.
According to Murze, there鈥檚 a 鈥渢ribal logic that has always prevailed in football,鈥 including a culture of provocation between fans that has 鈥渞e-emerged in recent years.鈥
For many fans, 鈥渇ootball is a channel for frustration,鈥 says Colombian sociologist German Gomez, author of the book 鈥淔ootball and Hooligans, an Urban Phenomenon.鈥
Gomez attributed it to 鈥渁 poeticization of what a team鈥檚 victory means in the lives of these fans, which leads to that loss of emotional control when a match is won, and even when it is lost.鈥
Security has been stepped up at stadiums around the continent, with some requiring biometric identification for entry and installing video surveillance of the stands.
鈥淚n Argentina, they monitor you more in a soccer stadium than at the airport,鈥 Murze said,
But the technology, while useful to identify banned offenders, is often powerless to prevent violence by hitherto unknown individuals with masked faces.
The Colombian sociologist accused Conmebol, South America鈥檚 football governing body, of being lax on violence, saying it doesn鈥檛 鈥渋ssue exemplary sanctions against soccer clubs because... closing a soccer club can mean significant financial losses.鈥
In Argentina, visiting fans are not allowed at local first division games.
Several clubs in the World Cup title holder, as well as in Chile and Uruguay, were forced to play behind closed doors last year as punishment for fan violence.
Murze argued that clubs need to professionalize their security apparatus, as they currently 鈥渞ely entirely on what the state and the police can do.鈥
Following the deaths of the two fans in Chile in April, the Chilean government ended the 鈥淪afe Stadium鈥 program, an initiative created in 2011 to combat football violence, without success.
The program prohibited drums and banners from stadiums and left stadium security in the hands of private individuals.
The government has pledged to replace it with new rules for all mass events.
鈥淢itigating football violence in South America must be driven by actions that promote education and football culture,鈥 said Gomez.

Taif Derby to headline weekend racing at King Khalid Racecourse
  • 2000 Guineas winner Mhally will be chasing Classic double on Saturday
  • Trainer Mustafa Al-Mosa鈥檚 Wared Al-Sengar (KSA) is top-rated in the Taif Arabian Derby

TAIF: King Khalid Racecourse is set for a packed weekend of racing with 2000 Guineas winner Mhally (GB) facing several familiar rivals in a field of 12 assembled for the $106,000 Taif Derby on Saturday.

A significant purse is on offer for the final two events, with another $106,000 prize purse attached to the concluding Taif Arabian Derby for Purebred Arabians, which sees prep winner Wared Al-Sengar (KSA) take on nine opponents over 1600m.

Mhally, trained by the in-form Thamer Al-Daihani for Sheikh Abdullah Homoud Al-Malek Al-Sabah, will be making his seasonal debut having beaten several of the field in last season鈥檚 2000 Guineas held in Riyadh on Jan. 25, an effort which was franked by his third to Golden Vekoma (USA) in the Saudi Derby the following month.

Jaarif (USA) was just a half-length behind Mhally in the 2000 Guineas and will be making his first start under Khaled Al-Mimoni for trainer Abdullah Al-Monif, with the fourth home that day, Faal Khair (USA), also in the lineup for the White Stables of King Abdullah Bin Abdulaziz and Sons.

Camilo Ospina, who blitzed his rivals in the Taif Jockey Championship with six winners last weekend, will again be aboard for trainer Ahmed Mohamoud following their comeback second in the trial for this at the beginning of the month, with the Mohammed Al-Daham-ridden Mhalhal (USA) third on that occasion and a second representative for Al-Daihani.

A fascinating addition to the field is Prince Faisal Bin Khaled Bin Abdulaziz鈥檚 Bernard Shaw (USA) after his debut in the country last weekend for the Red Stable.

A $1.8 million yearling, the mount of Fahad Al-Fouraidi for trainer Hadi Gharawi was sixth on his first outing and joined connections having won one of his four starts for the legendary Aidan O鈥橞rien in Ireland.

Trainer Mustafa Al-Mosa鈥檚 Wared Al-Sengar (KSA) is top-rated in the Taif Arabian Derby under Mohammad Al-Hubail and clashes again with the placed horses from the trial 鈥 runner-up Abdulaziz Al-Mosa鈥檚 Wasib (FR) and third home HM Al-Nasserallah (FR) for Bassim Al-Mousa.

Also in the field is Lacy Des Vialettes (FR), winner of the King Faisal Cup last season, but bidding to improve on her comeback seventh earlier this month. She goes post under Al-Mimoni for Al-Mosa.

The four-year-old won the first four races of her career before finding the company too hot on Saudi Cup day and running down the field in the Group 1 Obaiyah Arabian Classic.

Sixteen runners have been declared for the Taif University Cup Local Bred Horses Open over 1400m and they include four for the Red Stable headed by Riyadh Dirt Sprint fifth Saodad (KSA), who has worked his way back into form in two Taif outings this campaign.

Friday鈥檚 feature is the 1600m Makkah Al-Mokarramah Reg. Gov. Cup in which Al-Daihani has a strong hand with Tuwaiq Cup fourth Final Destination (GB) and Uncle (GB), who does battle once again with Nicolas Bachalard鈥檚 Henry Q (USA) after they fought out the finish for the prep here on Aug. 1.
