  • Opener Faisal Khan scored his maiden T20I century as the Kingdom chased down a target of 162 runs with 28 balls remaining
  • Faisal is the second Saudi player to score a century in the tournament, following his elder brother Abdul Waheed, who scored a century in the first match against Bahrain

黑料社区 registered its second straight win in the ICC Men鈥檚 T20 World Cup Asia Qualifier after beating Cambodia by five wickets in Qatar on Monday.

Opener Faisal Khan scored his maiden T20I century as the Kingdom chased down a target of 162 runs with 28 balls remaining.

Faisal is the second Saudi player to score a century in the tournament, following his elder brother Abdul Waheed, who scored a century in the first match against Bahrain and also happens to be his opening partner.

Against Cambodia, Faisal completed his half-century in just 20 balls, with 22 runs coming off the last four balls of Shah Abrar Hussain鈥檚 fifth over. Faisal鈥檚 blitzkrieg innings meant 黑料社区 was 86-0 at the end of six overs.

Faisal and Abdul shared a 116-run partnership for the first wicket in just 9.5 overs as 黑料社区 started off well. Abdul was stumped for 34 runs off Chadha, a dismissal that left Faisal fuming. Even though the chase was half done, Faisal felt it would have been special to share the moment of his century with his elder brother.

He was batting on 81 when Abdul returned to the pavilion. Faisal needed six more balls to reach three figures as he hit a six off Gireesh when on 94. Faisal was caught out on the last ball of the same over, ending with 101 runs off 42 balls. He hit six fours and 10 sixes in his innings. Faisal is only the third Saudi player to score a century in T20Is, after Waji Ul Hasan鈥檚 115 not out vs. Bhutan in February 2024 and elder brother Abdul鈥檚 110 vs. Bahrain last Tuesday.

Faisal said that the moment would have been even more special had Abdul been with him at the other end. 鈥淚 was very angry when he got out and the way he got dismissed. I was hitting the ball well, so, he just needed to occupy the crease and be with me. We have come through a lot, and had he been there, it would have been even more special,鈥 he told Arab News.

He feels it is easier to bat with his brother at the other end. 鈥淲e play for Pak Shaeens back in 黑料社区, so, there is an understanding in the game. We have started playing together too, and whenever he is around, I am comfortable. It feels like my brother will make it right if something goes wrong from my end,鈥 he added.

Elder brother Waheed was happy to see Faisal back in form and said it was a proud moment for the family. 鈥淭he moment he got to the century was special, even though I was clapping from the pavilion. I know he feels comfortable talking and batting with me, as we share feedback consistently. It is a proud moment for our family that both of us have scored centuries. I hope we can contribute similarly to our team鈥檚 success in the coming days,鈥 he said.

黑料社区 needed only 21 runs when Faisal was out. They lost two more wickets but were safely home in the 16th over. Faisal said that the team was looking for a big win from ball one, as they had an eye on the run rate.

鈥淲e needed to win big to stay in the hunt for qualification, and hitting the ball was the approach from ball one. The ball was coming well off my bat, and I just kept using powerplay restrictions to my advantage. I knew we could chase the total within 14-15 overs,鈥 he said.

Earlier in the day, Cambodia put up 161 runs for six wickets in their 20 overs after being invited to bat first at the University of Doha for Science and Technology ground. Lakshit Gupta top-scored with 62 runs off 45 balls, hitting four fours and three sixes. Uday Hathinjar added 16 runs and Luqman Butt contributed 26 runs, helping to build the score. Mahaj Chadha also played well toward the end, scoring 24 runs not out.

Cambodia had two strong partnerships at the start, with Hathinjar and Gupta adding 46 runs in five overs. Luqman stayed with Gupta to reach 109 in the 14th over, but the wickets tumbled at regular intervals thereafter. Ishtiaq Ahmad and Usman Najeeb took two wickets each for 黑料社区.

After losing the first two matches against Bahrain and the UAE, 黑料社区 has won three consecutive games, putting the side back in the frame for qualification. The top two teams from this seven-team qualifier will qualify for the regional final, which serves as a pathway for the ICC Men鈥檚 T20 World Cup to be held in 2026.

黑料社区 is fourth in the table with four points and will face third-place Thailand, who have six points. The UAE and Qatar, who face each other on Tuesday, are both unbeaten and have eight points from four matches. Bahrain also has four points but is behind 黑料社区 in net run rate. Cambodia and Bhutan are at the bottom without any points.

黑料社区 is facing Thailand on Tuesday and will face Qatar on Thursday, which could be a winner-takes-all match to get to the qualifier. Faisal is focused on the match against Thailand, taking the remaining matches as two finals.

鈥淲e know how important the match against Qatar is going to be, but first, we are focused on the Thailand match. We will try to give our best to get the win and then only think about Qatar. A win is the only result that will take us forward, so, we are determined to make it happen. To get better matches, to improve our ranking and to make ourselves better, we need to win the two finals from here,鈥 he added.

Faisal feels that the tournament is very important for the development of the sport in the Kingdom, too. 鈥淚f we go through to the qualifiers, we will have more programs. Right now, there are no turf pitches for us to train on, which is why we find it hard in the first matches. Getting to the next round will only aid our development phase, and we are hopeful of achieving it,鈥 he said.

For the final round of regional qualifiers, Malaysia and Kuwait have already booked their spots from the Asia Group A qualifier, while Samoa and Japan are representing the East Asia-Pacific region. Nepal, Oman and Papua New Guinea will also compete in the regional finals as they qualified for the 2024 edition of the T20 World Cup, held in the US and West Indies.

MIAMI GARDENS: In the end, not even 黑料社区 or Gianni Infantino could engineer a way to get Cristiano Ronaldo to the Club World Cup.
FIFA president Infantino certainly tried 鈥 last month making a public appeal ahead of the tournament.
鈥淚f any club is watching and is interested in hiring Ronaldo for the Club World Cup ...,鈥 he teased during an interview with YouTuber iShowSpeed.
Ronaldo鈥檚 contract with 黑料社区n club Al-Nassr was due to expire and FIFA鈥檚 decision to create a specially-made mini transfer window for its newest competition meant the path was clear for the Real Madrid great to sign a short-term deal with a new team just in time to take part.
Given his connection to 黑料社区, where he was the face of the oil-rich kingdom鈥檚 spectacular drive to sign some of soccer鈥檚 biggest stars in recent years, rumors began to circulate about a move to Al Hilal 鈥 the country鈥檚 most successful team and its sole representative at the Club World Cup.
The problem was that Al Hilal and Al-Nassr are cross-city rivals in Riyadh. And even if 黑料社区鈥檚 sovereign wealth fund majority owns both teams 鈥 along with others 鈥 that was a step too far.
鈥淎s much as I respect Ronaldo as a huge player, as we all recognize he is, it鈥檚 certainly completely counter-intuitive that you bring the biggest player of your biggest opponent to play with you,鈥 Al Hilal chief executive Esteve Calzada told the BBC. 鈥淓ven more when it鈥檚 only for three to four weeks.鈥
Maybe so, but 黑料社区, with its vast wealth, has a made habit out of turning the improbable into the possible. And the very fact the prospect of a short-term move between clubs was even rumored, points to the boundaries it has been able to push while making its big play to become a force in global sport.
It has, after all, already changed the face of golf and virtually cornered the market for big time boxing. F1 racing is a fixed event and top class tennis has been lured, as well.
It鈥檚 ambitions in soccer have been the most spectacular of all 鈥 winning the right to host the 2034 World Cup, buying one of the Premier League鈥檚 most iconic teams in Newcastle and luring a slew of superstar players to a league that has nothing like the profile of those in Europe or Latin America.
Most recently it has played a role in helping to fund the Club World Cup 鈥 either directly or indirectly 鈥 with a reported $1 billion investment in tournament broadcaster DAZN and a commercial partnership with FIFA, which has put up a $1 billion prize pot for teams competing.
The Club World Cup is the chance for 黑料社区 to make a latest statement on the international stage in its first chance test one of its elite clubs against the best from around the globe 鈥 starting with 15-time European champion Real Madrid at Miami鈥檚 Hard Rock Stadium on Wednesday.
That is why it is surprising there wasn鈥檛 more of a push to furnish Al Hilal with the type of marquee signing 黑料社区n clubs have been collecting since Ronaldo鈥檚 move opened the floodgates at the end of 2022.
The four-time Asian champion even released Brazil great Neymar in January after an ACL injury reduced him to just seven appearances following his $94 million move from Paris Saint-Germain in 2023.
A move was made for Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes just before the Club World Cup, but the Portugal midfielder rejected the offer. There was also reported interest in striker Victor Osimhen and Darwin Nunez, though no major deals were secured before the team flew out to the United States.
鈥淭he club is working in order to improve the team, and I believe this will be done. Now it鈥檚 pointless to talk about market because the market is closed,鈥 coach Simone Inzaghi Tuesday. And he still has big money recruits from overseas in the form of players like Aleksandar Mitrovic, Joao Cancelo, Kalidou Koulibaly and Ruben Neves.
But the significant acquisition made ahead of the tournament was Inzaghi himself, who left Italian giant Inter Milan earlier this month to become arguably the highest profile coach to head to 黑料社区.
鈥淢y ambition, the ambition of the club, is to try to grow more, to try to make Al Hilal become one of the best football clubs,鈥 he said. 鈥淚 believe the time has come to get out of my comfort zone.鈥
In a sense, 黑料社区 is shaking soccer out of its comfort zone.
Madrid versus Al Hilal could be seen as a case of soccer鈥檚 old money versus a seemingly unstoppable disrupter.
Madrid is the biggest powerhouse in the world鈥檚 most popular sport 鈥 its most successful and most storied team. Soccer, however, is witnessing an undoubted powershift and 黑料社区 is a coming force.
鈥淪ometimes we just focus on what鈥檚 going on in Europe, and we think there鈥檚 nothing else beyond Europe. We鈥檙e too focused on Europe,鈥 Madrid coach Xabi Alonso said.

Al-Ain 鈥榟onored and proud鈥 to represent UAE at Club World Cup against Juventus, says Khalid Al-Hashemi
  • The defender said the club鈥檚 sponsorship by ADNOC and XRG in the new tournament is indicative of support from across the UAE

ABU DHABI: Al-Ain defender Khalid Al-Hashemi says it will be a privilege for the club鈥檚 players to take to the field at the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup against Juventus in their opening fixture.

Al-Ain begin their FIFA Club World Cup campaign against the Italian giants in Washington, D.C. on Wednesday, June 18 (4 a.m. KSA on June 19) before further Group G matches vs. Manchester City and Wydad.

Al-Hashemi, who starred in both legs of the 2023-24 AFC Champions League final and is a UAE national team defender, says Al-Ain are relishing the opportunity to test themselves at the highest level.

鈥淧reparations are going well here in the US with the coach and the technical staff,鈥 said the 28-year-old center-back, who wears No.16 for Al-Ain. 鈥淭he opportunity to play against Juve and against City in particular is a big opportunity to learn and see how our levels are now, and if we can reach their levels and compete. We will do our best in our training sessions before the games and hopefully we can get good results.

鈥淥ur hopes are really high,鈥 Al-Hashemi added. 鈥淲e all know that we have pressure, but we want to represent Al-Ain and the UAE in the best way possible. We want to get results and show that Al-Ain are not just here (to make up the numbers) 鈥 we want to compete, we want to fight for the badge, for the flag and the country.鈥

The club enters the new competition with significant backing from XRG, the official sponsor of Al-Ain鈥檚 training kit during the FIFA Club World Cup, and through to the end of the upcoming season; as well as ADNOC, who will be the official sponsor of club鈥檚 first team jerseys during local matches throughout the upcoming season.

Al-Hashemi believes this backing is indicative of the support from across the UAE as Al-Ain seek to make the nation proud on the biggest global stage in club football.

鈥淲e are very privileged to have this partnership with XRG and ADNOC,鈥 says Al-Hashemi. 鈥淎l-Ain is honored and I think both parties are very happy with this partnership. Hopefully we represent our club, the company and our country on the biggest stage in a good way and get good results. We are very honored and very proud to be at the biggest club competition in world football.鈥

Al-Ain secured their place at this summer鈥檚 FIFA Club World Cup by winning the 2023-24 AFC Champions League, defeating Japan鈥檚 Yokohama F. Marinos 6-3 over two legs in the final.

Following their opening FIFA Club World Cup match against Serie A giants Juventus, Al-Ain travel to Atlanta to play eight-time Premier League winners Manchester City, before concluding their group stage fixtures against Wydad from Morocco in Washington, D.C. on June 26.

Al-Hashemi, who was born in Abu Dhabi, says one of his big hopes from Al-Ain taking part in the FIFA Club World Cup is that it will inspire the next generation of Emirati footballers. The competition, the first under an expanded format, runs from June 14 to July 13 in the US, and features 32 top teams from across world football.

鈥淚 imagine that when we play in the FIFA Club World Cup, the young generation will see this and say 鈥榦ne day I want to play in this competition, the biggest competition in the world鈥,鈥 said AI-Hashemi. 鈥淚magine how that will impact the young generation and give them hope and inspiration to play for a club and the national team. Hopefully, as a group and individually, we inspire the young generation to come back here to this tournament.鈥

Former champion Kvitova handed Wimbledon wildcard
  • The Czech, winner at the All England Club in 2011 and 2014, began her comeback from a 17-month maternity break last February

LONDON: Two times Wimbledon champion Petra Kvitova has been handed a wildcard to the women鈥檚 singles draw after being ranked too low for direct entry, organizers said on Wednesday.
The Czech, winner at the All England Club in 2011 and 2014, began her comeback from a 17-month maternity break last February.
The 35-year-old, a former world number two, is currently 572nd in the WTA rankings. She lost in the first round of a WTA 500 event on grass at Queen鈥檚 Club earlier this month.
Kvitova was the only non-British player on the initial list of wildcards, which includes former British men鈥檚 number one Dan Evans.
