Waheed鈥檚 heroics not enough as 黑料社区 lose to Bahrain
  • Opener Abdul Waheed scores a century but Kingdom defeated in Qatar
  • Waheed is confident that the team are capable of turning the tables in their upcoming matches

RIYADH: Opener Abdul Waheed went through a bittersweet experience as his maiden T20I century proved in vain as 黑料社区 lost to Bahrain in their first match of the ICC Men鈥檚 T20 World Cup Asia Qualifier B in Doha, Qatar, on Tuesday.

Waheed, who almost single-handedly led 黑料社区鈥檚 chase of 189 runs, was caught out on the last ball as the Kingdom ended three runs short of Bahrain鈥檚 total. 黑料社区 ended on 185-9 in reply to Bahrain鈥檚 188-5 in 20 overs.

黑料社区 needed 11 runs to win off Bahrain player Imran Anwar鈥檚 last over, with Waheed off the strike. Usman Najeeb ran a bye to give the talisman his chance. Waheed then ran a couple on the second ball. Anwar then bowled two dots in the next two balls as Waheed felt the pressure.

With eight required off the last two balls, Waheed scored a boundary on the penultimate ball. But his shot on the final ball failed to beat the fielder and Saudi ended up losing the match. Anwar, under pressure, bowled a full toss that Waheed clobbered toward the long-off region but it failed to clear the boundary.

Waheed鈥檚 innings ended on 110 runs, which included eight fours and seven sixes. After being dismissed for 99 earlier in February against Cambodia, Waheed finally reached his ton, despite his side failing to register victory.

Saudi had earlier invited Bahrain to bat first at the West End Park International Cricket Stadium. Skipper Haider Ali stood tall for Bahrain as he hammered 67 not out off 51 balls to take the team to 188-5, hitting six fours and two maximums in the process.

Imran Anwar set the tone for the team with 53 off 35 balls, which included two fours and four sixes. Haider and Anwar shared a 95-run partnership for the fourth wicket in just 66 balls. Ishtiaq Ahmad and Usman Najeeb took two wickets each for 黑料社区.

Chasing an impressive total, 黑料社区 kept losing wickets at regular intervals, but Waheed maintained the pace until the end. Vice captain Abdul Manan Ali was the next main contributor with 25 runs off 19 balls.

Manan Ali and Waheed put on 61 runs for the fourth wicket, but Waheed kept running out of partners. Ali Dawood, Imran Khan, and Imran Anwar took two wickets each for Bahrain, with Anwar taking the prized wickets of Manan Ali and Waheed.

Waheed, speaking to Arab News after the match, was disappointed not to have crossed the finish line but was not too downhearted.

He said: 鈥淚 had the self-belief that if I could take the match to the end, we could win.

鈥淓ven though there was no strong support from the other end apart from Manan, I knew the chase was possible. I saw the scoreboard when we needed around 40 runs and knew one big over would bring the match to our side. We got 16 runs from the 18th over, and I completed my century too.

鈥淚 know 18 runs in the last two overs were possible, but it鈥檚 unfortunate we couldn鈥檛 do it. There were some difficult balls to play, but we didn鈥檛 execute our plans there.

鈥淭he first four balls in the last over were really good. After I hit a four on the fifth ball, there was a belief I could hit the last one too.

鈥淭he last ball was the easiest of the match, and I hit it well too. (It was) bad luck 鈥 the wind was against the play, and the long-on fielder held on to the catch.鈥

Waheed believes there were lessons to be learned, not just for him but the whole squad after five new players featured within their ranks.

He added: 鈥淚 took the match to the end expecting to finish, but the support was not there.

鈥淚f I am in a similar situation next time, I will try to finish it two or three balls earlier so there鈥檚 less pressure. Other players in the team also understood how important it is to support a set batter in the middle.鈥

Waheed said he was too focused on the game to celebrate his milestone, adding: 鈥淚 was just looking at the per-over economy rather than enjoying the century.

鈥淚ndividual scores don鈥檛 mean anything if the team doesn鈥檛 win. I would swap it if it meant the team would win. Yes, a little bit of happiness is there for the milestone, but the team losing hurts more.鈥

Waheed is nevertheless confident that the team are capable of turning the tables in their upcoming matches. 黑料社区 face the UAE on Wednesday, and he believes it could represent a good chance of victory.

He said: 鈥淲e have a good batting unit this time, with batters who can come in at eight or nine and hit big. But we lack experience. There are five new players in the team and they learned a good lesson today.

鈥淚 have been playing for 12 years and have faced big teams. Those matches have prepared me to face bigger challenges. We have good batters and they just need to express themselves now.

鈥淭he UAE is our next opponent. We came up with extra plans this time to not just participate but to win as well. We knew matches would be close and if we win against the UAE it will open doors. We are focused on the tournament.鈥

In other matches on Tuesday, the UAE defeated Bhutan by 63 runs, while Qatar beat Thailand by five wickets.

Seven nations are taking part in the tournament with hosts Qatar joined by 黑料社区, Bahrain, Bhutan, Cambodia, Thailand, and the UAE. The top two teams from the qualifier will compete in the Asia-East Asia-Pacific regional final, which is a pathway for the ICC Men鈥檚 T20 World Cup to be held in 2026.

Malaysia and Kuwait have already qualified for the regional final from the Asia Group A qualifier, while Samoa and Japan are representing in the East Asia-Pacific A and East Asia-Pacific B qualifiers, respectively.

Nepal, Oman, and Papua New Guinea have also qualified for the regional finals.

PARIS: European Champions League winners Paris Saint-Germain will play their first ever Intercontinental Cup final in Doha, Qatar, on December 17, FIFA announced on Sunday.
Their opponents will only be determined four days earlier in the final playoff, called the Challenger Cup.
This will pit Egyptian club Pyramids, the African champions, against the winner of the match between Central American champions Cruz Azul from Mexico and the future winner of the Copa Libertadores.
The South American tournament is currently in the semifinal stage and includes two Brazilian sides.
Palmeiras are up against LDU Quito of Ecuador while Flamengo take on the Argentinian side Racing.
The Copa Libertadores final takes place on November 29.
From 1960 to 2004, the Intercontinental Cup pitted the champions of Europe and South America against each other.
In 2005, it was renamed the Club World Cup to include other continental champions but that competition was relaunched this year as a quadrennial tournament featuring 32 teams with Chelsea as the inaugural winners of the new format.
The Intercontinental Cup was itself relaunched in its new form last year when Real Madrid beat Mexican club Pachuca.

Alcaraz powers into Japan Open semis, Rune crashes out
  • 鈥淭hese kind of matches help to keep my confidence really, really high. I played some great tennis,鈥 Alcaraz said

TOKYO:World number one Carlos Alcaraz stormed into the semifinals of the Japan Open on Sunday with a commanding 6-2 6-4 win over American Brandon Nakashima, while Danish third seed Holger Rune was sent packing by Jenson Brooksby.
Alcaraz, who overcame an injury scare in his straight-sets win over Argentine Sebastian Baez in Thursday鈥檚 opener, showed scintillating form to dispatch Nakashima for his 65th win of the season, thumping 39 winners in the one-hour 20-minute contest.
The 22-year-old Spaniard, fresh from reclaiming top spot in the world rankings after clinching his sixth Grand Slam title at the US Open earlier this month, next faces Norwegian fourth seed Casper Ruud.
Earlier, Ruud blazed past Australian qualifier Aleksandar Vukic with a clinical 6-3 6-2 win.
鈥淭hese kind of matches help to keep my confidence really, really high. I played some great tennis,鈥 Alcaraz said.
鈥淚t鈥檚 great to go through, to play another semifinal. It鈥檚 special, because it鈥檚 the first time I鈥檓 playing in Japan, here in Tokyo. To reach the semis in my first appearance is something great.鈥
The biggest upset of the day came in Rune鈥檚 6-3 6-3 loss to American Brooksby, ranked 86th in the world.
鈥淥nce I get on a roll from a couple of matches, I just think I鈥檓 really able to get into my zone. I think that鈥檚 one of my big strengths,鈥 Brooksby said.
鈥淚 thought I had a pretty good plan on him coming out here. I had never played him before, but I think that鈥檚 good maybe, someone who hasn鈥檛 faced my unique skills, I guess.
鈥淚 had a good rhythm from the first two matches and thought I was playing really good tennis, and I think I just stayed a little bit more consistent today.鈥
Wimbledon semifinalist Taylor Fritz overcame a second-set blip to beat Sebastian Korda 6-3 6-7(5) 6-3 in an all-American clash.
Second seed Fritz, who is set to climb to fourth in the ATP rankings on Monday, overtaking Novak Djokovic, will take on Brooksby in the semis.

Europe take a record lead into Ryder Cup鈥檚 Sunday singles
  • When a long, loud and obnoxious day ended, Europe set a record for the largest lead going into Sunday singles under the format that dates to 1979: Europe 11 1/2, USA 4 1/2
  • Barring the greatest comeback 鈥 or collapse 鈥 in Ryder Cup history, the Europeans will be heading back across the Atlantic Ocean with that precious gold trophy

FARMINGDALE, N.Y.: Europe painted Bethpage Black in blue scores Saturday with exquisite golf that demolished and disheartened the Americans, and proved to be the best response to a New York Ryder Cup crowd that was so hostile extra security was brought in to keep it from getting worse.

When a long, loud and obnoxious day ended, Europe set a record for the largest lead going into Sunday singles under the format that dates to 1979: Europe 11 1/2, USA 4 1/2.

鈥淚 didn鈥檛 imagine this,鈥 European captain Luke Donald said. 鈥淓very time the Americans came at us, we came back. The resiliency and confidence they have is really, truly incredible.鈥

Rory McIlroy caught the brunt of verbal abuse and at one point turned to the spectators and said, 鈥淪hut the (expletive) up.鈥 And then he stuffed his shot to 5 feet for birdie that closed out the foursomes match for another blue point.

It was like that all day. The louder the crowd, the better Europe played. And barring the greatest comeback 鈥 or collapse 鈥 in Ryder Cup history, the Europeans will be heading back across the Atlantic Ocean with that precious gold trophy.

鈥淚鈥檓 seeing what looks like to be historical putting. They鈥檙e making everything,鈥 US captain Keegan Bradley said. 鈥淭hey鈥檙e a great team. They鈥檙e great players. They鈥檙e a tough team to beat.鈥

The previous record after the four sessions of team play was 11-5. No team has rallied from more than a four-point deficit on the last day. Europe needs to win only three of the 12 singles matches for the outright win.

Scottie Scheffler also made it into the Ryder Cup record book. The world鈥檚 No. 1 player is the first to go 0-4 under the current format.

Nothing summed up the week for the Americans quite like the 10th hole in fourballs. Tommy Fleetwood hit a wedge about 2 feet under the hole. Scheffler followed with a shot that hit the hole and the base of the pin, then caromed into the rough.

But it was far more than one shot. Europe holed putts from big and small, often getting shouted at by the spectators as they lined up the shots. Nothing stopped them.

The Americans had a lead in only three of the 70 holes played in fourballs Saturday afternoon. US Open champion J.J. Spaun hit it tight on the 17th and 18th for birdies as he and fellow San Diego State alum Xander Schauffele squeezed out one of only two US points on the day.

The other belonged to DeChambeau and Cameron Young in the opening foursomes match.

The New York fans didn鈥檛 turn on the Americans for their performance. They cranked up the noise against Europe, shouting at them in the moments before 鈥 but not during 鈥 their shots, booing at every turn.

鈥淟ook, in between shots, say whatever you want to me,鈥 McIlroy said. 鈥淭hat鈥檚 totally fine. Give us the respect to let us hit shots, and give us the same chance that the Americans have.鈥

New York State police spokesman Beau Duffy said two fans were ejected. The PGA of America said it added security to the McIlroy match and the other three. It also posted a message on the large video boards on 鈥淪pectator Etiquette.鈥

鈥淎ttendees consuming alcohol should do so in a responsible manner. Overly intoxicated attendees will be removed from the premises.鈥

Fans booed when the message was displayed.

McIlroy ultimately got the last laugh. He is unbeaten in his four matches. Fleetwood is 4-0 and can become the first European to go 5-0 on the road if he wins his singles match.

Whatever chances the Americans had might have ended on the final hole of the final match. Patrick Cantlay holed a few more big putts to keep them in the game, and a win on the 18th hole would have cut the deficit to five points.

Matt Fitzpatrick hit out of a bunker to 2 feet. Tyrrell Hatton, a last-minute sub for Viktor Hovland and his sore neck, hit wedge that nicked his teammate鈥檚 ball. It was another example of Europe鈥檚 superior play.

Cantlay鈥檚 shot spun back against the thick collar of the rough, and Sam Burns could only manage a shot to about 20 feet. Both missed. The throaty cheers of 鈥淥le, Ole, Ole, Ole鈥 returned, and the few American fans who stuck around that long were on their way home.

It got a little testy inside the ropes, too.

Fleetwood and Rose had a 3-up lead on the 15th over Scheffler and DeChambeau. Rose was first to putt from about 15 feet. But he felt DeChambeau鈥檚 caddie was in his space as he was lining up his putt and he told him so.

Rose made the putt, and DeChambeau matched him from 12 feet. DeChambeau barked at them going to the 16th tee and soon the caddies were involved.

There was warm handshakes a hole later when Europe won.

鈥淚 didn鈥檛 feel like that space was being honored,鈥 Rose said. 鈥淚 made my feelings known 鈥 asked him to move, maybe not as politely as I could have done, but in the scenario, it鈥檚 coming down the stretch. We both have a lot on our minds and it鈥檚 intense out there.

鈥淚 said to them, 鈥業f I should have done it a different way, I apologize.鈥 But other than that, I had to step up and hit a huge putt with a lot going on.鈥

Bradley was asked what message he would give to his team to keep hopes alive, and the New England native pointed to the Patriots鈥 stunning comeback against the Atlanta Falcons in 2017.

鈥淭wenty-eight to three. I was at that Super Bowl,鈥 Bradley said. 鈥淚 watched it. What a cool thing to have witnessed live in person.鈥

The way this Ryder Cup has played out, 11 1/2 to 4 1/2 feels much bigger.
