UNITED NATIONS: Members of the United Nations Security Council called on Monday for a surge in assistance to reach people in need in Israeli-basieged Gaza, warning that the situation in the Palestinian enclave was getting worse.
British Foreign Secretary David Lammy said there needs to be a “huge, huge rise in aid” to Gaza, where most of the population of 2.3 million people has been displaced and health officials in the coastal enclave say that more than 43,922 Palestinians have been killed in Israel’s 13-month-old offensive against Hamas.
“The situation is devastating, and frankly, beyond comprehension, and it’s getting worse, not better,” Lammy said. “Winter’s here. Famine is imminent, and 400 days into this war, it is totally unacceptable that it’s harder than ever to get aid into Gaza.”
The war erupted after Hamas-led gunmen attacked Israel in October last year, killing 1,200 people and taking more than 250 hostages, according to Israeli tallies.
US Ambassador to the UN Linda Thomas-Greenfield told the Security Council that Washington was closely watching Israel’s actions to improve the situation for Palestinians and engaging with the Israeli government every day.
“Israel must also urgently take additional steps to alleviate the catastrophic humanitarian situation in Gaza,” she said.
President Joe Biden’s administration concluded this month that Israel was not currently impeding assistance to Gaza and therefore not violating US law, even as Washington acknowledged the humanitarian situation remained dire in the Palestinian enclave.
The assessment came after the US in an Oct. 13 letter gave Israel a list of steps to take within 30 days to address the deteriorating situation in Gaza, warning that failure to do so might have possible consequences on US military aid to Israel.
Thomas-Greenfield said Israel was working to implement 12 of the 15 steps.
“We need to see all steps fully implemented and sustained, and we need to see concrete improvement in the humanitarian situation on the ground,” she said, including Israel allowing commercial trucks to move into Gaza alongside humanitarian assistance, addressing persistent lawlessness and implementing pauses in fighting in large areas of Gaza to allow assistance to reach those in need.
Danny Danon, the Israeli ambassador to the UN, said Israel had facilitated the entrance of hundreds of aid trucks a week but there had been a failure of aid agencies to collect that aid and Hamas had looted trucks. Hamas has denied the accusation.
“Not only must the UN step up its aid distribution obligations, but the focus must also shift to Hamas’ constant hijacking of humanitarian aid to feed the machine of terror and misery,” Danon said.
Two UN aid agencies told Reuters on Monday that nearly 100 trucks carrying food for Palestinians were violently looted on Nov. 16 after entering Gaza in one of the worst losses of aid during the war.
Tor Wennesland, the UN coordinator for the Middle East peace process, said humanitarian agencies face a challenging and dangerous operational environment in Gaza and access restrictions that hinder their work.
“The humanitarian situation in Gaza, as winter begins, is catastrophic, particularly developments in the north of Gaza with a large-scale and near-total displacement of the population and widespread destruction and clearing of land, amidst what looks like a disturbing disregard for international humanitarian law,” Wennesland said.
“The current conditions are among the worst we’ve seen during the entire war and are not set to improve.”

RIYADH: The Gulf Cooperation Council’s property market is set to extend its growth momentum into the second half of the year, supported by lower interest rates, government investment, and resilient investor demand, a new analysis showed. 

In its latest report, Kuwait Financial Center, also known as Markaz, noted strong activity in , the UAE, and Kuwait during the first half of the year, driven by rising property values and strong sales across the residential, commercial, and hospitality segments. 

The analysis underscores the expansion of ’s real estate sector as the Kingdom seeks to position itself as a leading business and tourism hub by the end of the decade. 

The Kingdom’s Real Estate General Authority expects the property market to reach $101.62 billion by 2029, with an anticipated compound annual growth rate of 8 percent from 2024. 

“With macroeconomic indicators showing signs of continued recovery, Markaz expects real estate markets in Kuwait, , and the UAE to maintain upward momentum through the second half of 2025,” Markaz said. 

It added: “Lower interest rates, fiscal support, and sustained government investment in economic diversification are anticipated to drive growth and market confidence.” 
 
The analysis said that while some markets face fiscal pressures, the overall outlook for the GCC real estate sector remains “positive,” offering “ongoing opportunities for investors, developers, and stakeholders.” 

: diversification boosts demand 

’s property market maintained strong performance in the first quarter, underpinned by a 4.3 percent year-on-year rise in the real estate price index and a 37 percent annual increase in sales, the report said. 

Markaz also said that demand for commercial properties remains strong, supported by non-oil economic growth and sectoral diversification.
 
In July, a report by credit rating agency S&P Global echoed similar views, highlighting that international retail brands attracted by social and economic shifts in are poised to drive further growth in the real estate sector. 

S&P Global also pointed to favorable prospects for residential real estate, with young Saudi families increasingly relocating to urban centers in search of work opportunities. 

In June, global consultancy Knight Frank also highlighted the Kingdom’s growing property market, noting that rents for Grade A office space in Riyadh reached SR2,700 ($719.95) per sq. meter by the end of the first quarter, up 23 percent compared with the same period last year. 

Markaz reported that ’s fiscal deficit is expected to widen to 4.9 percent of gross domestic product, from 2.8 percent in 2024, largely due to lower oil prices. 

Although reduced revenues could impact government spending and project awards, the Kingdom has indicated plans to sustain investment in economic diversification, the report added. 

“Based on macroeconomic indicators and real estate trends, Markaz believes that ’s real estate market remains in the accelerating phase in the first half of 2025 and is expected to sustain this momentum through the second half,” added Markaz. 

UAE: transactions hit record highs 

According to Markaz, the UAE’s real estate market delivered strong results in the first quarter, with transaction values reaching 239 billion dirhams ($65 billion). 

Dubai generated 142 billion dirhams in sales across 45,077 transactions, representing a 30 percent year-over-year increase. 

The report added that residential, office, and hospitality segments will continue to drive the UAE’s property sector, supported by strong demand, interest rate cuts, rising tourist inflows, and limited supply in prime locations. 

In 2024, Dubai recorded a total transaction value of 761 billion dirhams, up 20 percent from 2023. The emirate also logged 226,000 transactions, a 36 percent annual rise, and attracted more than 110,000 new real estate investors, up 55 percent year on year. 

Dubai also continued to outperform other global markets in rental yield at 7.6 percent as of May, compared with 5.3 percent in New York, 3.2 percent in Singapore, and 3.1 percent in London. 

“Markaz forecasts that the UAE’s real estate sector will continue its upward trajectory in the second half of 2025, marked by steady appreciation in land prices and rental rates in both Dubai and Abu Dhabi,” the report said. 

Kuwait: recovery gains pace 

Kuwait’s real estate market also continued its recovery in the first quarter of 2025, supported by rising land prices and rental values in the investment and commercial segments, the report said.
 
The value of real estate sales reached 896 million Kuwaiti dinars ($2.93 billion) in the first quarter, representing a 45 percent year-on-year rise. 

Sales in the residential and commercial sectors grew 38.5 percent and 22.9 percent, respectively, while the investment segment advanced 49 percent during the same period. 

The number of transactions rose 20.9 percent year on year, with residential and commercial deals climbing 11.7 percent and 163.6 percent, respectively. The investment segment recorded a 29.7 percent increase, supported by a stable rise in the expatriate population. 

The report projected Kuwait’s real GDP to grow 1.9 percent, rebounding from a 2.8 percent contraction in 2024. The recovery, fueled by higher oil GDP and steady non-oil activity, including project spending, consumer demand, and legislative reforms, is expected to bolster demand in the commercial and industrial property markets. 

“Despite evolving macroeconomic dynamics, the outlook for the GCC real estate sector remains positive, with solid investor interest, government-backed initiatives, and sectoral diversification continuing to support long-term growth,” said Markaz. 
 
“Markaz believes that real estate will remain a key contributor to the region’s economic development through the second half of 2025 and beyond,” it addded

Officials rescued two migrants and found four bodies, and were still searching for more missing with the help of a helicopter, drone, five boats and a larger vessel.
It was not immediately clear how many migrants the boat carried or what their nationality was.
Many migrants embark on the short but perilous route between the Turkish coast and the nearby Greek islands of Samos, Rhodes and Lesbos, which serve as entry points to the European Union.

Two boats, carrying 58 and 68 people and believed to have departed from Libya, were stopped and the passengers placed under guard at temporary shelters. More than 100 other migrants arrived on Crete over the weekend after strong winds eased.
Greece’s conservative government last month suspended all asylum claims for migrants arriving by sea from North Africa, a move it argued helped deter crossings that peaked in July at more than 2,500 in a single week.
The government remains at odds with regional authorities in Crete over a plan to build a permanent transit facility on the island. It is preparing draft legislation, to be submitted after the summer recess, that would mandate imprisonment for migrants whose asylum claims are denied and require ankle monitors during a 30-day compliance period before deportation.

ZURICH: FIFA President Gianni Infantino says that two incidents of alleged racist abuse which marred German Cup games are “unacceptable” as German police investigate.
Infantino’s comments came a day after Schalke’s Christopher Antwi-Adjei said he was subjected to racist abuse in a cup game at Lokomotive Leipzig. He was whistled by fans throughout the match after reporting the incident to officials.
In another incident, a Kaiserslautern substitute was racially abused while warming up in a game at RSV Eintracht, the team’s coach said. He didn’t name the player affected. Both incidents occurred as lower-league clubs from the former East Germany hosted larger teams in first-round games.
“It is unacceptable that incidents have occurred at two DFB-Pokal matches in Germany,” Infantino wrote on social media, using the German name for the competition. “Football has no place for racism or any form of discrimination.”
Infantino said FIFA’s Players’ Voice Panel would be “in touch” with the German football federation.
“Everyone at FIFA, The Players’ Voice Panel and the whole football community stands firmly with all those impacted by these events – we are committed to ensuring that players are respected and protected, and that competition organizers and law enforcement authorities take appropriate action,” Infantino added.
Antwi-Adjei filed a complaint about the incident at Lokomotive Leipzig and police were investigating, Schalke said late Sunday. At RSV Eintracht, fans and security quickly identified the alleged perpetrator and fans of both teams chanted “Nazis out,” German agency dpa reported.
The incidents in Germany came two days after Bournemouth forward Antoine Semenyo reported that he was racially abused by a spectator while playing at Liverpool. The game was briefly paused as the referee spoke to the coaches and captains of both teams.
Police said Saturday that a 47-year-old man from Liverpool was arrested on suspicion of a racially aggravated public order offense. He was taken into custody to be interviewed. Infantino has said FIFA’s Players’ Voice Panel would contact Semenyo.

OSLO: Some 200 climate activists including Greta Thunberg of Sweden blocked Norway’s largest oil refinery on Monday in a protest demanding an end to the country’s oil industry, organizers and police said.
Activists from Extinction Rebellion sat on the road, blocking the entrance to the Mongstad refinery in Bergen on Norway’s southwestern coast, while kayaks and sailboats obstructed the port’s entrance.
“We are here because it’s crystal clear that there is no future in oil. Fossil fuels lead to death and destruction,” Thunberg said in a statement, adding that oil producers like Norway “have blood on their hands.”
The burning of fossil fuels releases planet-heating carbon emissions.
Police said they were at the scene monitoring the situation from around 9:00 a.m. (0700 GMT).
The activists said they plan to continue with a string of protests in Norway throughout the week.
The Mongstad refinery is owned by Norwegian oil giant Equinor, which is majority-owned by the Norwegian state.
The activists demanded that Norwegian politicians present “a plan to phase out oil and gas.”
Norway, western Europe’s biggest oil and gas producer, is regularly criticized for its oil and gas production.
Oslo insists its industry provides jobs and develops know-how, and stresses the importance of guaranteeing stable energy deliveries to Europe.
Equinor has said it intends to keep its oil production in the country stable at 1.2 million barrels per day until 2035, and expects to produce 40 billion cubic meters (52 billion cubic yards) of gas a year by 2035.
