  • Last September, about 50 agreements were signed under Saudi-India Strategic Partnership Council
  • Saudi Vision 2030, India鈥檚 Viksit Bharat 2047 are complementary for new partnerships, Jaishankar says

NEW DELHI:听黑料社区 and India held talks on Wednesday in New Delhi, led by their foreign ministers, aimed at identifying new partnerships.

黑料社区鈥檚 Prince Faisal bin Farhan and India鈥檚 S. Jaishankar co-chaired the second meeting of the Ministerial Committee on Political, Security, Cultural and Social Affairs, which falls under the Saudi-India Strategic Partnership Council.

Their talks follow the council鈥檚 first leaders鈥 meeting last September, during which Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman and India鈥檚 Prime Minister Narendra Modi presided over the signing of about 50 initial pacts.

They had also agreed to form a joint task force to enable a $100 billion Saudi investment in India.

In a livestreamed video of his opening remarks, Prince Faisal said: 鈥淭he inaugural meeting of the Saudi-India Strategic Partnership Council 鈥 has set the stage for a new era of cooperation across various fields and we look forward to further enhancing the council鈥檚 capabilities and efficiency in achieving our shared objectives.鈥

He added: 鈥淲e are confident that advancing cooperation serves our mutual interests as well as benefits the region more broadly, and I look forward to exploring the diverse aspects of our cooperation.鈥

黑料社区 is home to about 2.6 million Indian nationals, making it the third-largest host country for the diaspora, after the UAE and the US.

The Kingdom is also India鈥檚 fifth-largest trading partner, with bilateral trade between the two countries at around $43 billion in 2023-2024.

Trade and investments are 鈥渋mportant pillars鈥 in Saudi-India relations, Jaishankar said during the meeting as he highlighted recent efforts to boost cooperation, including in technology and renewable energy.

鈥淪audi鈥檚 Vision 2030 and Viksit Bharat 2047 hold complementarities for our industries to build new partnerships. I am glad to note that our businesses are collaborating intensively,鈥 he said, referring to the Kingdom鈥檚 transformation plan and India鈥檚 goal to become a developed nation.

鈥淲hile we may be time-tested friends, but our partnership is premised on progress and focused on the future.鈥

  • An estimated 6,000 firearms were stolen from police armories during the deadly August 2024 unrest that toppled the hard-linerule of then-prime minister Sheikh Hasina

DHAKA: Bangladesh announced on Wednesday cash rewards to surrender machine guns, rifles and pistols looted during an uprising last year, hoping to collect hundreds of weapons ahead of key elections.

An estimated 6,000 firearms were stolen from police armories during the deadly August 2024 unrest that toppled the hard-linerule of then-prime minister Sheikh Hasina.

More than 1,300 are still reported as missing, police spokesman AHM Shahadat Hossaine told AFP.

Police issued a list of rewards for their return, ranging from just over $4,000 for a light machine gun to $800 for an assault rifle, and $400 for a shotgun or pistol. Cash would also be paid for ammunition.

鈥淏angladesh Police guarantee full confidentiality,鈥 Hossaine said, urging people to hand them in.

Bangladesh has been in political turmoil since Hasina fled into exile last year, and political parties are jostling for power ahead of polls slated for February 2026.

Dhaka-based rights group Odhikar says political violence since the uprising has killed nearly 300 people.

More than 150 others have been killed in mob violence, according to Odhikar.

Investigators meanwhile continue to probe a devastating fire that tore through the cargo complex of the country鈥檚 main international airport on October 18.

Bushra Islam, a senior official at Biman Bangladesh Airlines, told AFP that a team had found the smashed lock of a vault which had survived the fire 鈥 a strongroom used to store arms, as well as valuable items such as gold and diamonds.

Islam said it was not clear 鈥渉ow many arms have gone missing, if any.鈥

A senior police officer, speaking on condition of anonymity, said a team had inspected the vault after the fire.
