US-Israeli settlers hope to see a second Trump term
  • Recent polls show that a majority of Israelis dream of the days when the former president inhabited the White House
  • Donald Trump prioritized Israel during his previous term, moving the American embassy to Jerusalem among his other actions

SHILOH, Palestinian Territories: Less than a week before the United States presidential election, Americans living in settlements in the Israeli-occupied West Bank know exactly who they want to win: Donald Trump.
Recent polls show that a majority of Israelis, 66 percent according to one conducted by Israel鈥檚 Channel 12 News, dream of the days when the former president inhabited the White House.
Trump prioritized Israel during his previous term, moving the American embassy to Jerusalem, recognizing Israeli sovereignty over the occupied Golan Heights and helping to normalize ties between Israel and several Arab states under the so-called Abraham Accords.
Now, many Israelis believe Trump will offer yet more support as the country battles Iran-backed militant groups in Gaza and Lebanon, as well as Iran itself.
鈥淚鈥檓 proud to tell you that I voted for President Trump,鈥 Eliana Passentin, 50, who moved to Israel from San Francisco as a child, said.
For Passentin, a mother and grandmother, the stakes are higher than for the average Israeli.
For the past 29 years she has lived in Eli, part of a cluster of Israeli settlements located in the heart of the West Bank.
The area has been occupied by Israel since 1967, but it could become Palestinian sovereign territory under a two-state solution favored by the international community.
Passentin is employed by the local regional council.
She recalls how successive administrations in Washington pressured Israel to stop expanding settlements in an attempt to mediate peace between Israelis and Palestinians and reach a two-state solution.
鈥淯nited States of America, our greatest ally, we thank you, but please understand we know how to run our country,鈥 Passentin said.
In her backyard, with sweeping views of the entire area, Passentin points to nearby Israeli and Palestinian towns.
鈥淚 don鈥檛 think that Israelis living here are an obstacle to peace. On the contrary, I think that the Israelis living here are building the region for everyone,鈥 she said.
She said the region was a hub for Jews in Biblical times, and claims that under international agreements Israelis have a right to live here.
International law says otherwise, however, and Israeli settlements in the occupied West Bank are considered illegal by the international community.
Among Israelis who vote for Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu鈥檚 ruling right-wing coalition, 93 percent support Trump鈥檚 candidacy, according to the Channel 12 poll.
鈥淭hings have changed since October 7,鈥 Passentin said, referring to Hamas鈥檚 attack on southern Israel on that day in 2023 which sparked the war in Gaza.
鈥淣ow it鈥檚 a whole different story 鈥 it鈥檚 not about Judea and Samaria, it鈥檚 about Israel,鈥 she said, using the Biblical terms for the southern and northern West Bank.
鈥淲e have a right to defend ourselves... and I think President Trump respects and understands that.鈥
Gedaliah Blum, 45, a neighbor who was born in New Jersey, also said he voted for Trump based on the question of 鈥渨hat kind of future we want to have here in Israel.鈥
鈥淒o we want a future that has an embargo threatened on Israel every time we defend ourselves?鈥 he asked.
鈥淭rump is not going to pressure Israel to sign a ceasefire that will let Hamas remain in power in Gaza. They鈥檙e not going to push Israel to sign a peace agreement with Lebanon that will allow Hezbollah to remain in power.鈥
With Kamala Harris in the Oval Office, Israel will be under constant 鈥減ressure,鈥 Blum said.
鈥淲e鈥檙e going to get pressure, we鈥檙e going to get embargoes, we鈥檙e going to get Iranian money in their pockets. It鈥檚 not in the best interest of Israel.鈥
In the nearby settlement of Shiloh, where an estimated 20 percent of residents hold US citizenship, New York-born Yisrael Medad, 77, said he believed Trump would be good not only for America but also for 鈥淎merica鈥檚 friends abroad, including Israel.鈥
鈥淚 think the policies that a Republican candidate such as Trump are promoting are most beneficial for the administration, Congress and the American people,鈥 he said.
On Israel, Medad said he believed that Trump would treat Israel more 鈥渇airly in terms of not denying its rights to defend itself... not only in a physical sense but also on the ideological front.鈥
Referring to a recent incident at a Democratic campaign rally in which Harris did not push back against a demonstrator who said Israel was committing a 鈥済enocide鈥 in Gaza, Medad said: 鈥淭hat鈥檚 not the type of candidate I want in the White House.鈥

Jordan court sentences suspects in rocket, drone plots targeting national security
  • The cases are related to arrests announced by Jordan鈥檚 security services in April

AMMAN: Jordan鈥檚 State Security Court on Wednesday handed down prison sentences to several defendants convicted in cases linked to plots to manufacture rockets and drones for use inside the country.

The cases are related to arrests announced by Jordan鈥檚 security services in April, when 16 people were detained for allegedly planning attacks aimed at destabilizing the kingdom.

The defendants were found guilty of manufacturing weapons for illegal use and of acts that endangered public safety and national security, according to court documents.

In the missile manufacturing case, defendants Abdullah Hisham and Moaz Ghanem were sentenced to 15 years of temporary hard labor, while a third defendant, Mohsen Ghanem, received a sentence of seven and a half years.

The court said the men had established warehouses in Amman and Zarqa to produce and store short-range rockets, with funding and training from abroad.

In the recruitment case, defendants Marwan Al-Hawamdeh and Anas Abu Awad were sentenced to three years and four months in prison for attempting to recruit individuals for illegal activities and coordinating with foreign parties.

In the training case, defendants Khader Abdel Aziz, Ayman Ajawi, Mohammed Saleh, and Farouk Al-Salman received similar sentences for training others to carry out security-related operations inside Jordan.

In the drone case, the court acquitted four defendants, ruling that prosecutors had not proven criminal intent. The men, Ali Ahmed Qasim, Abdel Aziz Haroun, Abdullah Al-Hadar, and Ahmed Khalifa, were ordered to be released.

The April arrests, announced by the General Intelligence Department, had accused the suspects of forming four interconnected cells that sought to 鈥渢arget national security and sow chaos鈥 using rockets, drones, and explosives.

Officials said some of the suspects had ties to the Muslim Brotherhood, an allegation the group denied.

Erdogan: Not fair to put burden of peace only on Hamas, Palestinians
  • Erdogan said Israel remained the main obstacle to peace in Gaza despite a plan by US聽President Donald Trump

ANKARA: Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan said on Wednesday it was neither fair nor realistic to put the burden of achieving peace in Gaza solely on Hamas and Palestinians, and that Israel must stop its attacks in order for peace efforts to succeed.
Speaking to lawmakers from his party, Erdogan said Israel remained the main obstacle to peace in Gaza despite a plan by US President Donald Trump. Ceasefire talks in Egypt, to which Turkish officials are attending, are critical, he said.
"Peace is not a bird with a single wing. Putting the entire burden of peace on Hamas and Palestinians is not a fair, correct or realistic approach," he said, repeating his claim that Hamas is a "resistance group".

  • The Al Aqsa compound, in Jerusalem鈥檚 walled Old City, is Islam鈥檚 third holiest site and the most sacred in Judaism
  • Under a delicate decades old 鈥渟tatus quo鈥 arrangement with Muslim authorities, the Al-Aqsa compound is administered by a Jordanian religious foundation and Jews can visit but may not pray there

JERUSALEM: Israel鈥檚 far-right National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir visited the flashpoint Al-Aqsa mosque compound in Jerusalem on Wednesday and called on Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to pursue 鈥渃omplete victory鈥 over Hamas in Gaza.
In a video on the edge of one of the most sensitive sites in the Middle East, Ben-Gvir said that two years after the October 7 2023 Hamas attack that triggered the Gaza war, Israel was 鈥渨inning鈥 at the Jerusalem compound known to Jews as Temple Mount and to Muslims as the Noble Sanctuary.
鈥淓very house in Gaza has a picture of the Temple Mount, and today, two years later, we are winning on the Temple Mount. We are the owners of the Temple Mount,鈥 Ben-Gvir said in the video released by his Jewish Power party.
鈥淚 only pray that our prime minister will allow a complete victory in Gaza as well 鈥 to destroy Hamas, with God鈥檚 help we will return the hostages, and we will win a complete victory,鈥 Ben-Gvir said.
His remarks were released as Israel and Palestinian militant group Hamas are deep in indirect negotiations in Egypt to release all remaining Israeli hostages in Gaza and end the war there.
Ben-Gvir, known as a hard-liner well before he helped Netanyahu form the most right-wing coalition government in Israel鈥檚 history, heads the pro-settler, nationalist-religious Jewish Power party. He has previously threatened to quit Netanyahu鈥檚 government unless Hamas is utterly destroyed.
The Al-Aqsa compound, in Jerusalem鈥檚 walled Old City, is Islam鈥檚 third holiest site and the most sacred in Judaism. Under a delicate decades-old 鈥渟tatus quo鈥 arrangement with Muslim authorities, the Al-Aqsa compound is administered by a Jordanian religious foundation and Jews can visit but may not pray there.
Ben-Gvir has previously challenged those rules, prompting Netanyahu to issue statements saying Israel was committed to the status quo there.
Suggestions that Israel would alter rules at the Al-Aqsa compound have sparked outrage in the Muslim world and ignited violence in the past.

  • Turkiye said that all initiatives were being taken for Turkish citizens held by Israel to be freed

ANKARA: Turkiye on Wednesday slammed an intervention by Israeli forces against a flotilla attempting to deliver humanitarian aid to Gaza as an act of piracy and a violation of international law.
Turkiye鈥檚 foreign ministry said the intervention against the Freedom Flotilla, including Turkish nationals and lawmakers, showed that the 鈥済enocidal鈥 Israeli government targeted all peaceful measures and heightened tensions in the region while damaging peace efforts.
It added in its statement that all initiatives were being taken for Turkish citizens held by Israel to be freed and returned to Turkiye, and that it was coordinating with other countries regarding their citizens too.

  • It is the latest strike on health care facilities since the start of the war in Sudan in April 2023, between the RSF and the regular Sudanese army

PORT SUDAN: A drone strike by Sudan鈥檚 paramilitary Rapid Support Forces killed eight people in a maternity ward in the besieged city of El-Fasher, a medical source told AFP on Wednesday.
The attack, which occurred on Tuesday, also injured seven people in El-Fasher Hospital and 鈥渄amaged buildings and equipment,鈥 the health worker said on condition of anonymity for their safety.
It is the latest strike on health care facilities since the start of the war in Sudan in April 2023, between the RSF and the regular Sudanese army.
El-Fasher Hospital is one of the last functioning health facilities in the North Darfur state capital, where the paramilitary is waging its fiercest assault on the city yet.
El-Fasher is the only major city in the vast western region of Darfur the RSF has not yet seized, despite besieging the city since May 2024.
The UN has called El-Fasher 鈥渢he epicenter of child suffering,鈥 where mass starvation has taken hold and even the animal feed families have survived on now costs hundreds of dollars a sack.
The war in Sudan has killed tens of thousands of people and created the world鈥檚 largest hunger and displacement crisis.
