  • Shehbaz Sharif arrived in Riyadh on Tuesday, weeks after Pakistan signed $2 billion deals with Saudi businesses
  • Saudi crown prince this year reaffirmed commitment to expediting $5 billion investment package for cash-strapped Pakistan

ISLAMABAD: Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Tuesday met Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman in Riyadh and discussed ongoing bilateral engagements and Pakistan鈥檚 future economic plans, Sharif鈥檚 office said in a statement.听

The meeting took place on the sidelines of the eighth edition of the two-day Future Investment Initiative (FII) summit for which global business, technology and financial leaders have converged in the Saudi capital, looking for opportunities to forge relations with some of 黑料社区鈥檚 biggest companies and its $925 billion sovereign wealth fund.

Sharif arrived in Riyadh on Tuesday for a visit that comes after one to Islamabad by Saudi Investment Minister Khalid bin Abdulaziz Al-Falih, during which over $2 billion in agreements and memorandums of understanding (MoUs) were signed between Saudi and Pakistani businesses.听

鈥淭he two leaders took stock of the ongoing bilateral engagements, especially in follow up to the decisions taken in previous high-level meetings held in Makkah and Riyadh in April 2024,鈥 Sharif鈥檚 office said in a statement after his meeting with the Saudi crown prince.听

In April this year, after PM Sharif met the crown prince in Makkah Al-Mukarramah, 黑料社区 reaffirmed its commitment to expedite a $5 billion investment package for Pakistan.

At Tuesday鈥檚 meeting, Sharif apprised the crown prince of Pakistan鈥檚 economic, institutional and policy reforms agenda, saying that the Kingdom had a 鈥渃entral role鈥 to play in Pakistan鈥檚 鈥渇uture economic plans.鈥 He also appreciated the Kingdom鈥檚 efforts to promote regional peace and stability in the Middle East and reiterated Pakistan鈥檚 commitment to stand by 黑料社区 in such efforts.

鈥淭he two leaders exchanged views on regional developments and agreed to closely coordinate positions on regional issues,鈥 Sharif鈥檚 office said.

鈥橮ARTNERSHIPS IN AI, EDUCATION, HEALTH鈥

Prior to his meeting with the Saudi top leader, Sharif attended the FII summit in Riyadh where he said his government was looking to form partnerships with Saudi and other global companies in the realms of artificial intelligence (AI), education and health.

鈥淧akistan is laying the foundation for a knowledge-based economy driven by innovation in three pivotal domains, artificial intelligence, education and health, in which we look forward to forging useful partnerships,鈥 Sharif said during his address at the summit, which is focusing on global investments in AI, robotics, education, energy, space, finance, health care and sustainability.听

鈥淥ur mission is clear, and it is to encourage young minds to redefine the boundaries of AI, training skilled engineers and data scientists as the backbone of Pakistan鈥檚 AI growth and equipping our workforce to harness the power of AI across industries.鈥

The prime minister said Pakistan had more than 275,000 registered doctors, with the country鈥檚 youth pioneering new health tech solutions.听

鈥淲ith advancements in health care standards, we envision a future where our doctors and scientists collaborate across borders for a healthier tomorrow,鈥 Sharif added as he invited participating nations to invest in Pakistan and bring their expertise to the South Asian country as it built a future 鈥渞ooted in resilience and shared prosperity.鈥

鈥淧akistan stands ready to join those countries who dare to dream big,鈥 Sharif said.听

The Pakistani PM鈥檚 visit takes place at a time when Islamabad is seeking to strengthen trade and investment ties with friendly nations, particularly the Kingdom, which has promised a $5 billion investment package that cash-strapped Pakistan desperately needs to shore up its dwindling foreign reserves and fight a chronic balance of payment crisis.

  • Both nations will exchange information to recover proceeds of crime, extend technical support to each other
  • The development comes amid growing cooperation between the countries, particularly in defense, trade and economy

KARACHI: Pakistan and 黑料社区 have signed an agreement to strengthen cooperation between both sides to counter corruption, money laundering and facilitate mutual legal assistance, Pakistan鈥檚 National Accountability Bureau (NAB) said on Thursday.

The agreement was signed by Mazin bin Ibrahim Al-Kahmous, president of Saudi Oversight and Anti-Corruption Authority (Nazaha) and NAB Chairman Nazir Ahmed during the inaugural session of Asset Recovery Interagency Network for Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region in Jeddah.

Under this memorandum of understanding (MoU), both agencies have agreed to strengthen collaboration through the exchange of information related to corruption and money laundering. Asset-tracing and recovery of proceeds of crime is also a common area of interest.

鈥淭he MoU envisions mutual cooperation in matters related to mutual legal assistance (MLA), and extending technical support for the preparation of MLA requests prior to their submission through diplomatic channels,鈥 Pakistan鈥檚 NAB said in a statement.

The Nazaha president lauded NAB efforts in global drive against corruption, especially the reforms that have yielded unprecedented recoveries of 6.4 trillion Pakistani rupees or $23 billion in a short span of time, according to NAB. He particularly praised Chairman NAB鈥檚 address to the MENA ARIN forum that objectively covered the challenges faced by all states in curbing corruption.

The development comes amid growing cooperation between the two countries, particularly in defense, trade and economy. The two countries signed a 鈥楽trategic Mutual Defense Agreement鈥 during Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif鈥檚 visit to Riyadh last month, pledging that aggression against one would be treated as an attack on both. This week, a Saudi business delegation of arrived in Pakistan to explore opportunities in various sectors.

NAB chief Ahmed lauded the Saudi leadership in taking successive anti-corruption initiatives that have rejuvenated regional anti-corruption efforts. He particularly praised the recent landmark defense agreement between the two countries that will further augment the brotherly ties between the two countries.

Pakistan and 黑料社区 have close religious, cultural, diplomatic and strategic ties, particularly in trade and defense. The Kingdom is home to over two million Pakistani expatriates, who are the largest source of remittances to the South Asian country.

黑料社区 has also provided substantial support to Pakistan during its prolonged economic challenges in recent years, including oil cargoes on deferred payments as well as external financing and assistance with International Monetary Fund loan programs.

  • Agreement signed last month pledges that aggression against one country will be treated as an attack on both
  • Shehbaz Sharif calls the pact a 鈥榝ormal declaration鈥 of the longstanding cooperation spanning several decades

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan鈥檚 federal cabinet on Thursday ratified a newly signed defense pact with 黑料社区, state media reported, as Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif emphasized what he called the 鈥渃enturies-old Islamic bond鈥 between the two nations.

The two countries signed the Strategic Mutual Defense Agreement during Sharif鈥檚 visit to Riyadh last month, pledging that aggression against one would be treated as an attack on both. The accord was widely viewed as a move to formalize longstanding military cooperation into a binding security commitment aimed at bolstering joint deterrence.

Prior to the cabinet鈥檚 ratification, Sharif briefed ministers on his recent trip to the Kingdom, describing it as a milestone in Pakistan-Saudi relations.

鈥淚 want to tell you that our visit to 黑料社区 was historic,鈥 he said in televised remarks at the start of the meeting. 鈥淥ur historical, Islamic and brotherly relations with 黑料社区 are not 77 years old. They span centuries and have only strengthened since Pakistan鈥檚 creation.鈥

鈥淭his agreement is a formal declaration of those informal ties built over the past seven decades,鈥 he added. 鈥淚t states that any attack on one brotherly country will be considered an attack on the other, and the entire nation has welcomed this development.鈥

The state-owned Associated Press of Pakistan said cabinet members 鈥減aid tribute to the leadership of Pakistan and 黑料社区鈥 following the prime minister鈥檚 remarks.

Both countries have long enjoyed warm and multifaceted ties, with 黑料社区 providing billions in financial support to help Islamabad navigate repeated economic crises. With macroeconomic indicators improving after a series of IMF-mandated reforms, Pakistan is now seeking export-led growth and higher foreign direct investment.

A major Saudi business delegation is currently in Pakistan to discuss government-to-government and business-to-business projects.

Islamabad says it has pitched over $28 billion worth of initiatives, with several agreements expected to be signed later this month in Riyadh.

  • Project Kuiper is expected to expand high-speed Internet access in remote and underserved regions
  • Officials and experts say the rollout could boost connectivity, freelancing, and Pakistan鈥檚 IT exports

ISLAMABAD: In a key development for Pakistan鈥檚 information technology (IT) and communication sector, Amazon鈥檚 Low Earth Orbit (LEO) satellite initiative, Project Kuiper, plans to launch satellite broadband services in the country by the end of 2026, the Ministry of IT said on Thursday.

The company鈥檚 satellite broadband venture will not be the first of its kind in Pakistan, as limited connectivity already exists through the country鈥檚 space agency SUPARCO鈥檚 PakSat-1R and a few private providers serving remote areas.

Once operational, Kuiper will be among the first large-scale global LEO satellite networks to enter Pakistan, promising faster speeds, wider coverage, and more affordable access compared to existing services.

鈥淎mazon鈥檚 Low Earth Orbit (LEO) satellite initiative, Project Kuiper, shared its plans to launch satellite broadband services in Pakistan by the end of 2026,鈥 the IT ministry said in a statement, adding this significant development in country鈥檚 digital landscape followed a strategic meeting between the Federal IT Minister Shaza Fatima Khawaja, and a delegation from Amazon鈥檚 Project Kuiper.

The statement said the project, which represents a multi-billion-dollar global investment, was designed to expand high-speed Internet access worldwide, particularly in underserved and remote areas.

鈥淧roject Kuiper鈥檚 entry into Pakistan is a step forward in advancing digital inclusion and strengthening our connectivity ecosystem,鈥 Khawaja was quoted in the statement.

She emphasized that these investments align with the government鈥檚 vision of building a Digital Nation Pakistan where every citizen, regardless of geography, has access to fast, affordable and secure Internet services.

The IT ministry said the Kuiper team expressed its intent to establish ground infrastructure in Pakistan, including gateways and points of presence, to support reliable connectivity and seamless integration with the country鈥檚 digital ecosystem.

With a constellation of up to 3,236 satellites, Project Kuiper aims to deliver high-performance broadband, offering speeds up to 400 Mbps through affordable terminals, the statement added.

鈥淭he collaboration is expected to create new opportunities for Pakistan鈥檚 IT sector by enhancing connectivity, supporting innovation and bridging the digital divide,鈥 the ministry said.

Industry professionals and stakeholders welcomed the announcement, saying the project will enhance connectivity, boost freelancing and support growth in the country鈥檚 IT and digital export sectors.

鈥淚f affordable high-speed satellite Internet becomes available, it could significantly improve connectivity, particularly in remote areas,鈥 Muhammad Zohaib Khan, former Chairman of Pakistan Software Houses Association (P@SHA), told Arab News.

He described high-speed Internet as the backbone of Pakistan鈥檚 IT exports, noting that while the world is moving toward 5G technology, Pakistan still lacks complete 4G coverage.

Khan explained these technologies rely on frequency availability, and currently, only 274 megahertz is allocated in Pakistan, while in comparison, Bangladesh, also a developing country, has allocated more than 500 megahertz.

鈥淢any freelancers work from their hometowns and villages, and better Internet access there would enable more people to participate in online work,鈥 he said, adding that this advancement would also support the expansion of e-commerce and digital services, allowing individuals from far-flung regions to join the digital economy.

鈥淚mproved connectivity could help uncover hidden talent in areas such as South Punjab, interior Sindh and Balochistan,鈥 he added.

Nadeem Nasir, former manager communication at Ignite National Technology Fund said Project Kuiper鈥檚 satellite broadband can help connect Pakistan鈥檚 remote communities with reliable and high-speed Internet.

鈥淭his will bring education, health care and job opportunities within reach,鈥 he told Arab News.

鈥淏y linking rural users to the digital economy and strengthening online work potential, it can accelerate socio-economic inclusion and bridge the connectivity gap that has long limited growth beyond urban centers,鈥 he added.

Internet speeds in Pakistan have dropped by up to 40 percent during later part of the last year, according to the Wireless and Internet Service Providers Association of Pakistan (WISPAP), as the federal government last year moved to implement a nationwide firewall to block malicious content, protect government networks from cyberattacks and allow authorities to identify IP addresses associated with what it called 鈥渁nti-state propaganda鈥 and 鈥渢error attacks.鈥

Pakistan suffered a total of $1.62 billion in losses due to Internet outages and social media shutdowns in 2024, according to a recent report by global Internet monitor Top10VPN.com, surpassing losses in war-torn countries like Sudan and Myanmar.

The report, released on Jan. 2, said Pakistan, home to over 240 million people, experienced 9,735 hours of Internet disruptions that affected 82.9 million users, with elections and protests cited as the primary causes. The number of hours represented the cumulative total across all disruptions nationwide, adding up hours of service suspensions in multiple regions where shutdowns overlapped.

P@SHA also warned earlier this year that Internet slowdowns and restrictions on virtual private networks (VPNs) could lead to financial losses and increase operational costs for the industry by up to $150 million annually.

  • Mushtaq Ahmad Khan was among activists on the Gaza aid flotilla seized by Israeli forces this month
  • He vows to continue supporting Palestine and calls for Israel to be held accountable for its war crimes

ISLAMABAD: A former Pakistani senator detained by Israel after joining an aid flotilla bound for Gaza on Thursday likened the prison where he was held to a 鈥渃oncentration camp,鈥 saying thousands of Palestinians, including children under ten, were imprisoned there.

Mushtaq Ahmad Khan, who was among activists aboard the Global Sumud Flotilla seized by Israeli naval forces this month, returned to Pakistan earlier in the day after his release.

The flotilla, carrying medical supplies and food, was one of several international efforts to deliver humanitarian assistance to Gaza, where shortages of food and medicine have worsened after nearly two years of Israeli bombardment and months of aid restrictions.

鈥淲e [were held] in the Negev desert, Ktzi鈥檕t jail, which is a concentration camp [where] 10,000 Palestinians, innocent, civilian, non-combatant Palestinians, are in the Israeli jail, with hundreds of children below 10 years,鈥 Khan told Arab News after his arrival in Islamabad.

He said Israel was running a 鈥渢errorist regime鈥 involved in war crimes, adding that the global community must hold it accountable for crimes against humanity.

Khan, who received a warm welcome at Islamabad International Airport, said his detention had only strengthened his resolve to continue supporting the Palestinian cause.

鈥淚 feel that I have got more energy and I will, by the will of God, carry on this struggle,鈥 he continued. 鈥淲e will organize Pakistan-Palestine committees throughout the country and prepare another, even larger flotilla.鈥

The Pakistani politician also maintained that the recent ceasefire in Gaza was a result of global pressure built by activists who came up with initiatives like the flotilla movement.

鈥淭he public pressure, the global public pressure has forced Israel and its Western backers to sit with Hamas for talks and agree on a ceasefire,鈥 he told Arab News.

The Global Sumud Flotilla included activists, parliamentarians and lawyers from several countries, including the high-profile Swedish climate campaigner Greta Thunberg.

Rights groups condemned Israel鈥檚 interception of the aid convoy and the detention of passengers, calling for their immediate release and renewed access for humanitarian aid to Gaza.

Pakistan鈥檚 foreign ministry said earlier it had coordinated Khan鈥檚 return with its international allies, thanking 鈥渂rotherly countries鈥 for facilitating his safe passage.

At the airport, several supporters expressed admiration for Khan鈥檚 stance and called for continued support for Palestinians.

Umm-e-Rehman, a student who came to welcome him, praised his courage and said Gaza鈥檚 people needed more than words of solidarity.

鈥淗e did something that we should all be able to do,鈥 she said, adding the people in Gaza needed 鈥渁id, hospitals and their free land.鈥

Another supporter, Dr. Shehnaz, who did not give her full name, welcomed news of the ceasefire.

鈥淭he good news we received this morning is that the war between Hamas and Israel has ended,鈥 she said. 鈥淲e pray for Palestine.鈥

  • Governor Jameel Ahmed says gender gap in financial access has narrowed to 30% in Pakistan
  • He urges microfinance institutions to strengthen risk management, adopt digital credit tools

KARACHI: Pakistan鈥檚 financial inclusion rate has risen to 67% in 2025 from 47% in 2018, the top central bank official said on Thursday, crediting digital innovation and policy reforms for expanding access to financial services.

The rise comes as the government and the State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) have stepped up efforts to strengthen microfinance and digital banking amid a period of relative macroeconomic stability. Officials have also urged the public to use formal banking channels and digital platforms to help build resilience in the financial system.

鈥淕overnor Jameel Ahmad highlighted that the financial inclusion rose from 47% in 2018 to 67% in June 2025 while the gender gap in financial access narrowed from 47% to 30% over the same period,鈥 the central bank said in a statement issued after his speech to the ninth Annual Microfinance Conference in Karachi.

鈥淕overnor Ahmad assured that the State Bank remains fully committed to working alongside the microfinance industry to strengthen resilience, safeguard customers and expand outreach,鈥 it added.

The top SBP official told the conference that Pakistan鈥檚 economic recovery was gathering pace after tough policy measures helped stabilize inflation and foreign exchange reserves. He said inflation had declined sharply and was expected to stay within the government鈥檚 5-7% target range over the medium term.

Ahmed also noted that foreign exchange reserves were now five times higher than in February 2023, reflecting 鈥渟trategic interbank purchases鈥 that helped the government meet debt repayments without excessive borrowing.

He outlined new principle-based regulations for microfinance banks, allowing greater flexibility and higher lending limits of up to Rs5 million ($17,500) for agriculture, microenterprise and housing loans, and Rs500,000 ($1,750) for general loans.

Ahmad urged microfinance institutions to adopt stronger risk management, enhance liquidity buffers, and use digital tools for credit scoring to prevent fraud and maintain sustainability.

鈥淭ogether, we can ensure that microfinance continues to play its vital role in fostering inclusive, resilient, and sustainable growth,鈥 he said.
