JEDDAH: With the Kingdom鈥檚 entertainment season in full swing as the weather cools, here are some of the not-to-be-missed events coming your way before the end of the year听

Soundstorm

The Middle East鈥檚 biggest music festival returns to Banban, Riyadh from Dec. 12 to 14. The lineup is mostly focused on electronic dance music again, but headliners include UK rock band Muse , who,鈥痮ver the course of their 25-year career, have repeatedly been hailed as one of the world鈥檚 best live bands by critics and fans alike; rap legend Eminem; and the hugely influential alternative hip-hop pioneer Tyler, the Creator. Other big names on this year鈥檚 roster include Jared Leto鈥檚 band Thirty Seconds to Mars; Dutch DJ Armin Van Buuren; the ubiquitous David Guetta; and EDM superstar Steve Aoki. As always, there will be significant representation from regional and local artists getting the opportunity to showcase their skills too.听

Red Sea International Film Festival听

Stars of the silver screen will descend on Jeddah from Dec. 5 to 14 for what has 鈥 in just three previous editions 鈥 become the region鈥檚 most significant film festival. Only a few details have yet been announced about this year鈥檚 lineup, beyond the addition of the 鈥淣ew Saudi, New Cinema鈥 program 鈥 which features 21 shorts created by Saudi filmmakers addressing 鈥渢hemes from cultural identity and modern societal topics to personal victories鈥 鈥 and the 15 short films that will make up the Arab Shorts Competition. Based on previous years, though, expect an eclectic roster encompassing arthouse movies, box-office beasts and Oscar contender, attended by a diverse audience of global celebrities.听

Ancient Kingdoms Festival听听

From Nov. 7 to 30, AlUla plays host to the Ancient Kingdoms Festival, a 鈥減rogram of special events showcasing 7,000 years of human history.鈥 This year鈥檚 edition includes an exhibition of treasures from Pompeii and Herculaneum 鈥 both buried under the volcanic ash caused by the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 CE, leaving incredibly well-preserved relics of Roman life. AlUla鈥檚 Old Town is the site of one of the highlights: The Incense Road Experience, billed as an 鈥渋mmersive adventure through a historic maze of mudbrick buildings as live performances and state-of-the-art technology meet interactive storytelling and exclusive explorations of archaeological treasures.鈥 The hugely popular 鈥渋mmersive night-time summit鈥 Hegra After Dark is back too.听听

Elie Saab听

The groundbreaking and hugely influential Lebanese fashion designer will stage 鈥1001 Seasons鈥 at The Venue in Riyadh on Nov. 13 鈥 a fashion show that will showcase his latest collection, but also include live performances. 黑料社区 has been a hugely significant market for Saab throughout his career, and 鈥1001 Seasons鈥 will likely include some tributes to the Kingdom in both Saab鈥檚 designs and the accompanying entertainment. Earlier this year, Saab said he planned to create 鈥渟omething unprecedented and new to celebrate the important occasion in Riyadh, a city that supports creativity and cultural diversity in the region.鈥 The show is part of Riyadh Season, which began last week and includes a host of other major events in the Kingdom鈥檚 capital.听

Stephan Bodzin听

The veteran German DJ and producer performs in the Kingdom for the first time on Nov. 1 in Riyadh鈥檚 Jax District. His live shows have been widely acclaimed, often embracing his love of collaboration, so expect the unexpected in Riyadh.听

Michelin Guide鈥檚 Gwendal Poullennec talks Saudi culinary scene ahead of local launch

DUBAI: Wednesday marks the launch of the Michelin Guide in 黑料社区 with the first clutch of restaurants to be revealed in a three-part rollout that includes Nov. 15 and Dec. 15.

The moment marks a major milestone in the Kingdom鈥檚 evolving culinary landscape.

Gwendal Poullennec, international director of the Michelin Guide, spoke to Arab News in Paris last week about the future of 黑料社区鈥檚 food scene.

鈥淲hen we are talking about Saudi, we still have to consider that it鈥檚 an emerging both gastronomic and hospitality destination 鈥 when we look at other destinations that are a bit more mature, the second step 鈥 I wish will one day happen in the future 鈥 is to see more independently run and smaller properties blossom.

鈥淭ypically that鈥檚 part of the trajectory when you see the emergence of a culinary scene,鈥 he added.

At the time of writing, the first wave of restaurants recognized by Michelin has yet to be announced, with critics left wondering what the ratio of homegrown concepts to international imports will be.

Organized in partnership with the Culinary Arts Commission, a subsidiary of 黑料社区鈥檚 Ministry of Culture, the new selection will focus on Riyadh and Jeddah.

It will also begin to explore the diverse regions of the Kingdom, including Alkhobar and AlUla 鈥 indicating there will be plenty of opportunities for Saudi-born concepts to shine during the phased announcements.

One Michelin star is awarded to restaurants for 鈥渉igh-quality cooking that is worth a stop,鈥 two stars for 鈥渆xcellent cooking that is worth a detour,鈥 and three stars for 鈥渆xceptional cuisine that is worth a special journey.鈥

Alongside the coveted star ratings, the selection also includes the popular Bib Gourmand category, a distinction awarded to restaurants that provide good quality food at a moderate price.

Poullennec also touched on the Michelin Guide鈥檚 role in encouraging international tourism, whether it be the restaurant guide or the newly expanded Michelin Keys guide that focuses on hotel properties around the world.

With seven hotels in 黑料社区 earning Michelin Keys at last week鈥檚 ceremony in Paris, 黑料社区 is fast becoming a market for discerning travelers.

鈥淕astronomy is sometimes the main hook, but people are looking for authentic places to stay and especially the new generations,鈥 Poullennec said.

Looking inwards, there is a keen focus at Michelin on ensuring the restaurant guide mirrors local tastes.

With the famously anonymous inspectors representing more than 30 nationalities, there seems to be an effort to ensure different culturally-informed taste palettes are accounted for in the selection process.

It is part of the reason Poullennec believes the guide has succeeded internationally, beyond the traditional Western parameters and taste buds.

The Michelin Guide first went beyond those borders with its launch in Japan in 2007, popular with Japanese locals themselves according to Poullennec because 鈥渋t was a true reflection of what they believe is the soul of Japanese food.鈥

鈥(It was a) way to rediscover their own culture, fostering a real sense of pride because all the countries and all the cultures are very proud about their own culinary culture and heritage 鈥 and for me, for Saudi, the recipe is the same.

鈥淚f we would like to deserve the trust, regardless who we are, of course we are legitimate but being legitimate is not enough, you have to be relevant to be able to talk to the local people to make sure that all selection makes sense, that you have not only international outlets, but 鈥 real local, authentic flavors.鈥

鈥淎nd for me, that is the key for success, it all starts with the quality of the curation itself.鈥
