No Saudi-Israeli normalization without Palestinian state: Prince Turki

No Saudi-Israeli normalization without Palestinian state: Prince Turki
  • Ex-intelligence chief: Kingdom has led the way in trying to resolve conflict
  • West has not done enough to pressure Israel; 鈥榮imply harsh talk鈥 has 鈥榞otten us nowhere鈥

LONDON: There will be no normalization of ties between 黑料社区 and Israel until an independent Palestinian state is established, Prince Turki Al-Faisal, the former head of the Kingdom鈥檚 intelligence services, has warned.听

During a talk at London-based think tank Chatham House, the former Saudi ambassador to the US also discussed Washington鈥檚 role in the peace process as the Gaza war approaches its first anniversary, and how talks before the outbreak of hostilities had been broadly positive.

He said the US is keen on the resumption of talks between Israel and 黑料社区 to strengthen regional security and to forge economic ties, but Riyadh鈥檚 position is that 鈥渋f there鈥檚 a Palestinian state that Israel accepts to come (into) existence, then we can talk about normalization with Israel.鈥

The prince added: 鈥淏efore Oct. 7 鈥 talks not only progressed along those lines, but also the Kingdom invited a Palestinian delegation to come and talk directly to the Americans about what it is that might bring about a Palestinian state.

鈥淚鈥檓 not privy to those talks so I don鈥檛 know what happened between the Palestinians and the Americans, but the Kingdom鈥檚 position has always been we won鈥檛 speak for the Palestinians. They have to do it for themselves.听Unfortunately, of course, the Oct. 7 (Hamas attack against Israel) put an end to those talks.鈥

Prince Turki said the establishment of a Palestinian state is not only crucial for Israeli ties with 黑料社区 but with the rest of the Muslim world as well.

鈥淎 Palestinian state is a primary condition for 黑料社区 to have normalization with Israel, but 鈥 on the Israeli side, the whole government is saying no Palestinian state,鈥 he added.

Prince Turki said for 黑料社区, an independent Palestine would encapsulate the 1967 borders, including East Jerusalem.

He added that the Kingdom has led the way in trying to achieve a peaceful resolution to the conflict, citing the 1981 King Fahd Peace Plan and the 2002 Arab Peace Initiative proposed by King Abdullah.

During the current Gaza war, 鈥渢he Kingdom led the Muslim world, and not only summits with the Arabs but with the (rest of the) Muslim world, and also 鈥 the diplomatic missions that have been taking place to convince the world that there must be an end to the fighting, led by the Saudi foreign minister,鈥 Prince Turki said.

鈥淭he Kingdom has been in the forefront of condemning the Israeli onslaught on the Palestinians, not just in Gaza but equally in the West Bank.鈥

He criticized the US and other Western nations for not applying more pressure on Israel to end the war, citing how the UK had only recently begun to suspend certain arms export licenses to Israel following the election of a new government in July.

鈥淚鈥檇 like to see more done by the UK,鈥 he said. 鈥淚 think, for example, the UK 鈥 should recognize the state of Palestine. It鈥檚 long overdue.鈥

Prince Turki said the US could apply direct pressure on Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu over the actions of his government and military, and should address funding and lobbying by groups and individuals sympathetic to Israel.

鈥淚 think the US has enormous tools to affect Israel which it isn鈥檛 using, not just simply 鈥 denial of supply of weapons and material to the Israelis,鈥 the prince added.

鈥淎 lot of financial help goes to Israel from the US. If some of the privileges that (the) Israeli lobby, for example, in America, enjoys 鈥 of tax-free contributions to Israel 鈥 can be withdrawn from those Israeli lobbyists, that will (put) great pressure on Israel.鈥

In the US, 鈥測ou have to register as a lobbyist for a specific country, or be prosecuted, if you want to talk for that country, but a lot of organizations in America do that for Israel and still enjoy a tax-free status because they鈥檙e considered not representing Israel per se, but simply as philanthropic or humanitarian groupings,鈥 he said.

鈥淭here are many tools that are available to the US, not simply harsh talk, which seems to have gotten us nowhere. But is America ready to do that? As I said, I鈥檓 not too optimistic about that.鈥

Saudi Hajj Ministry activates Nusuk app for offline use by pilgrims
  • Allows for issue of permits, booking train tickets, navigating maps, without the internet

JEDDAH: 黑料社区鈥檚 Ministry of Hajj and Umrah has introduced a new feature enabling full access to the Nusuk app without consuming internet data, the Saudi Press Agency reported recently.

The initiative, launched in cooperation with telecom providers stc, Mobily, and Zain, aims to ease the journey of pilgrims and enhance their digital experience during Hajj and Umrah.

This step allows owners of local SIM cards to use the Nusuk app and all its services without requiring an active data plan or internet connection, explained ministry spokesperson Ghassan Al-Nuwaimi.

Pilgrims can use services for permits, booking Haramain High-Speed Train tickets, navigating maps, using the artificial intelligence feature, and submitting reports and inquiries.

Nusuk platform CEO Ahmed Al-Maiman said the new feature is expected to improve crowd management, provide instant access to essential information and services, reduce the number of lost individuals, and speed up verification of permits upon entry.

Where We Are Going Today: Kuuru in Riyadh

Kuuru, an ambitious Saudi concept from Leylaty Group and Peru鈥檚 MCK Hospitality, delivers on its promise of a vibrant fusion of Peruvian passion and Japanese precision.

The experience begins upon entry. The interior is undeniably sophisticated, radiating a chic, fine-dining ambiance perfect for a special culinary journey.

Visiting the Riyadh branch located in the King Abdullah Financial District, the service was impeccable, significantly elevating the evening. Our server was a knowledgeable guide, tailoring recommendations and orchestrating a seamless flow of dishes.

The culinary adventure started strong. The Kuuru ceviche was a standout, incredibly fresh and complex. Be advised: Its vibrant acidity is boldly and intensely sour, a hallmark purists adore but some palates might find assertive.

The hotate aburi offered rich, creamy scallop perfection. The tiradito hotate, featuring luxurious Hokkaido scallops and truffle, delivered exquisite flavor, though a touch more textural contrast (perhaps a crisp element) would have elevated its otherwise soft composition.

The Nikkei-style nigiri maintained excellence. The nakka truffle (salmon belly) was beautifully balanced and simple, while the wagyu a lo pobre with the quail egg added to the umami experience.

The niku karashi main course featured a succulent grilled ribeye, perfectly complemented by Nikkei chimichurri and Japanese sweet mustard atop smooth potato puree.

Dessert provided a satisfying finale. The Lima chocoreto combined moist chocolate cake with Peruvian manjar (dulce de leche), ganache, and honeycomb 鈥 rich yet not cloying.

The signature Aka sour cocktail proved a vibrant companion throughout but may have been overpowering on the palate, especially with the already sour element to the dishes I ordered.

My verdict is that Kuuru offers a compelling, multisensory Nikkei experience within Riyadh鈥檚 upscale dining scene. While the ceviche鈥檚 sourness is authentic and the tiradito hotate could benefit from added texture, these are minor notes in an otherwise superb symphony.

Backed by stellar service, a distinctive menu, and an elegant setting, Kuuru is a must-visit destination for adventurous food lovers seeking memorable fusion.

  • Ornate balconies symbolize 黑料社区鈥檚 architectural heritage and climatic ingenuity

RIYADH: In the heart of Al-Wajh鈥檚 historic old town, the rawasheen 鈥 ornately carved wooden balconies 鈥 are enduring symbols of 黑料社区鈥檚 architectural heritage and climatic ingenuity.

These elegant, protruding structures once lined the homes of coastal residents, offering more than aesthetic beauty, according to a recent Saudi Press Agency report.

Adorned with intricate arabesque patterns and interlocking geometric designs, the rawasheen served a vital function: cooling homes in the sweltering summer heat.

Their design allows outside air to circulate freely while shielding interiors from direct sunlight, functioning as a natural ventilation system long before modern air conditioning.

During the height of the summer, they transformed into protective barriers that welcomed Red Sea breezes and offered shade and comfort to residents, the SPA report explained.

The old town of Al-Wajh, with its preserved port, ancient walls, castles, and historic buildings, remains a testament to the region鈥檚 building techniques and rich heritage.

Once known as the port of Hegra (Madaen Saleh), Al-Wajh鈥檚 strategic location on the northern Red Sea coast played a key role in shaping its cultural and architectural legacy.
