RIYADH: 黑料社区鈥檚 ambitious drive to become a global hub for esports and gaming has been highlighted at a Riyadh forum featuring industry leaders from around the world.

The New Global Sports Conference on Aug. 24-25 included panel discussions that provided a comprehensive look at the Kingdom鈥檚 strategic investments, innovative approaches, and broader vision for the future of esports.

Key figures outlined their plans and aspirations in a panel discussion titled 鈥淕ame On, 黑料社区,鈥 showcasing the nation鈥檚 commitment to becoming a major player on the international stage.

Prince Faisal bin Bandar bin Sultan, head of the Saudi Esports Federation, talked about the Kingdom鈥檚 goal to raise its status in the global esports arena.

Historically, countries such as France, China, South Korea, and Japan have been dominant, he said. However, 黑料社区 aims to shift this narrative from 鈥淲hy Saudi?鈥 to 鈥淲hy not Saudi?鈥

Through events such as the Esports World Cup, and substantial investments in local talent and infrastructure, the Kingdom is determined to place itself on par with established esports powerhouses.

鈥淲e want Saudi to be a natural part of the conversation about esports, just like the other leading countries,鈥 Prince Faisal said.

The Kingdom is not only investing in events and talent, but also improving its educational programs and infrastructure to support the growth of the esports industry.

鈥淭hings like this Esports World Cup. It showcases the talent that we have on the event side, on the players鈥 side, our young men and women, showing our capabilities.

鈥淲e deserve to be on the stage with all the best teams in the world like we have here,鈥 the prince added.

Abdullah Alswaha, Saudi minister of communications and information technology, highlighted the value of the gaming industry, a sector now valued at $200 billion and tipped to exceed $1 trillion.

Adwa Alarifi, Saudi assistant minister of sport affairs, and deputy minister of strategic planning and investment, discussed the Kingdom鈥檚 strategic approach to integrating esports into its broader sports and entertainment strategy. (AN Photo/Abdulrahman Shalhoub)

Alswaha emphasized the transformative potential of esports, saying that gaming has driven technological advancements and innovation, with examples such as generative AI and its gaming connections.

鈥淚f it wasn鈥檛 for video gaming, you would not appreciate generative AI as we appreciate it today,鈥 he said. 鈥淚f it wasn鈥檛 for gaming, Elon Musk would not have started at the age of 12. Created a game called Blaster that motivated him and inspired him to move into STEM into coding into space and creating.鈥

Alswaha also discussed the social benefits of gaming, including its positive effects on mental health and social connections.

黑料社区 is committed to leveraging esports not only as a profitable sector, but also as a vehicle for societal good, he said.

鈥淲e should be all collectively, very proud as publishers, investors, and global partners, because you鈥檙e part of a movement that is the innovation trigger to the next big thing, not only for a game or a sport, but for a movement that is touching artificial intelligence, innovation, space and life as we know it.鈥

Adwa Alarifi, Saudi assistant minister of sport affairs, and deputy minister of strategic planning and investment, discussed the Kingdom鈥檚 strategic approach to integrating esports into its broader sports and entertainment strategy.

Since the launch of Vision 2030, 鈥渨e鈥檝e hosted more than 100 international events in the last five years, and we鈥檝e welcomed more than 2.5 million sports fans during those events, and the impact on our people it鈥檚 just incredible,鈥 Alarifi said.

She said that the rise in sports engagement demonstrates the profound impact of global sporting events on local communities.

Alarifi said that with women鈥檚 participation in esports surpassing the global average and substantial increases in female sports involvement, the Kingdom is making notable progress in empowering women and youth.

鈥淭hanks to our leadership, today, we have equal opportunities across all sectors, for both men and women, and within sports, we have equal opportunities in the whole ecosystem, starting with players and athletes, and leading up to leaders as well.

鈥淲e鈥檙e one of the few countries in the world that have mandated all sports and federations to have a seat for a female represented on the board, and that resulted in having more than 40 women national teams across different sports.鈥

Prince Faisal also discussed the role of education in nurturing the next generation of esports professionals. The Saudi Esports Federation has established the Saudi Esports Academy to provide comprehensive training not just for players but also for roles including coaching, production, and refereeing. The initiative aims to integrate these programs into academic curricula, making esports a viable career path for Saudi youth.

鈥淥ur investment in esports is great. That really put us on the map to showcase to the world that we鈥檙e serious about what we鈥檙e doing. To me, it鈥檚 a gateway to a greater industry that we鈥檙e trying to build here,鈥 he said.

鈥淚t鈥檚 not just about esports, it鈥檚 about the gaming and esports industries. But none of that will come to any fruition if we don鈥檛 invest in the future, the next generation, and that鈥檚 the education, but also events like this, showcasing on the main stage what you can become.鈥

Mike Milanov, chairman of the Advisory Board for Gaming & Esports at Qiddiya, highlighted ambitious plans for Qiddiya鈥檚 gaming and entertainment district, which seeks to offer a comprehensive gaming experience that combines entertainment, sports, and culture.

鈥淲e鈥檙e (in Qiddiya) not afraid to take risks and think big and innovate and make sure that it鈥檚 an inclusive, global, community-centered and community-designed hub for gaming and esports. So that鈥檚 the goal of the district,鈥 he said.

The first day of the New Global Sport Conference focused on showcasing 黑料社区鈥檚 determination to position itself as a global leader in esports and gaming.

The conference highlighted 黑料社区鈥檚 evolving role in global esports and its potential to drive the industry forward in the years to come.

Team Liquid鈥檚 Manuel Bachoore wins EA Sports FC 25 Tournament at Esports World Cup 2025
  • 鈥楳anuBachoore鈥 wins second World Championship title, and Team Liquid make history as first club to secure 3 championships in a single edition of the Esports World Cup

RIYADH: Manuel 鈥淢anuBachoore鈥 Bachoore has won the FC Pro World Championship at the Esports World Cup 2025 for Team Liquid in a 5-3 grand final win against Brice 鈥淏rice鈥 Masson of Team Vitality, picking up Team Liquid鈥檚 third championship title at this year鈥檚 event.

ManuBachoore鈥檚 victory sees him become a two-time champion, having won in 2023. He claimed a top eight finish at the Esports World Cup 2024.

And ever since favorite and world No. 1 Anders 鈥淰ejrgang鈥 Vejrgang was eliminated this year, ManuBachoore has looked like the most likely winner.

ManuBachoore made it to the World Championship stage via the play-ins, where he only dropped one match in the group stage, topping his group. His main event run proved more difficult, with multiple matches being won by just one goal, proving the intensity of the high-level competition.

The Grand Final was a close match, with ManuBachoore鈥檚 signature attacking style on display against his French rival, where goals were traded between the pair.

The final moments proved a tense affair, with ManuBachoore leading by just one goal. However, he was able to score a late goal to make it 5-3, which ended up sealing the championship in his favor.

鈥淚鈥檓 so thankful to God, for me to be two-time World Champion is more than I ever asked for in my career. Honestly, I did not think it was possible to win two times.

鈥淏ut here we are, I can鈥檛 believe it. It feels like a dream. It is my dream. I鈥檓 happy it鈥檚 a reality,鈥 said ManuBachoore.

鈥淚 said in an interview before we started, the first time I did not really realize what I did. Now I realize and enjoy it, I鈥檓 so happy. It鈥檚 a dream. I started in the play-ins, so I came here, not even sure if I would qualify for the tournament.

鈥淚鈥檓 here now with the trophy. I鈥檓 grateful for this dream.鈥

ManuBachoore earned Team Liquid 1,000 Club Championship points for his victory, sending the side firmly to the top of the Club Championship standings.

The victory in EA Sports FC 25 is Team Liquid鈥檚 third title at the Esports World Cup 2025, marking the first time a club has won three titles at the same Esports World Cup.

The result blows the Club Championship wide open, with Team Falcons having just one top-eight finish this weekend, as we head into the final two weeks.

Team Liquid鈥檚 victory in EA Sports FC 25 not only gained them 1,000 Club Championship points, but also denied third-place Team Vitality 250 more crucial points.

Team Vitality remain in third place; however, the strong showing in EA Sports FC 25 has seen them bridge the gap to Team Falcons in second place to just 550 points.

Week six at the Esports World Cup 2025 takes place until Aug. 17 with finals in Teamfight Tactics, Rocket League and Tekken 8.

  • Japanese boxing officials will hold an emergency meeting on Tuesday as the sport in the country faces intense scrutiny following the deaths of two fighters in separate bouts at the same event

TOKYO: Japanese boxing officials will hold an emergency meeting on Tuesday as the sport in the country faces intense scrutiny following the deaths of two fighters in separate bouts at the same event.

Super featherweight Shigetoshi Kotari and lightweight Hiromasa Urakawa, both 28, fought on the same card at Tokyo鈥檚 Korakuen Hall on August 2 and died days later following brain surgery.

The Japan Boxing Commission (JBC), gym owners and other boxing officials are under pressure to act and will hold an emergency meeting on Tuesday.

They are also expected to have talks about safety next month, local media said.

鈥淲e are acutely aware of our responsibility as the manager of the sport,鈥 Tsuyoshi Yasukochi, secretary-general of the JBC, told reporters on Sunday.

鈥淲e will take whatever measures we can.鈥

Japanese media highlighted the risks of fighters dehydrating to lose weight rapidly before weigh-ins.

鈥淒ehydration makes the brain more susceptible to bleeding,鈥 the Asahi Shimbun newspaper said.

That is one of the issues the JBC plans to discuss with trainers.

鈥淭hey want to hear from gym officials who work closely with the athletes about such items as weight loss methods and pre-bout conditioning, which may be causally related (to fatalities),鈥 the Nikkan Sports newspaper said.

In one immediate measure, the commission has decided to reduce all Oriental and Pacific Boxing Federation title bouts to 10 rounds from 12.

鈥淭he offensive power of Japanese boxing today is tremendous,鈥 Yasukochi was quoted by the Asahi Shimbun as telling reporters.

鈥淲e have more and more boxers who are able to start exchanges of fierce blows from the first round. Maybe 12 rounds can be dangerous.鈥

Pakistan face fifth bowler dilemma ahead of West Indies decider
  • Pakistan鈥檚 part-time Saim Ayub, Salman Agha dup conceded combined 66 runs in seven wicketless overs
  • Pakistan, who won preceding T20 series 2-1, are currently tied with West Indies in three-match ODIs 1-1

Pakistan captain Mohammad Rizwan acknowledged a dilemma over the fifth bowler and said they would take a late decision on their team combination for Tuesday鈥檚 series decider following their defeat in the second one-day international on Sunday.

Pakistan, who won the opening ODI by five wickets, posted a competitive 171-7 in 37 overs in a rain-truncated match but West Indies prevailed by five wickets to draw level in the three-match series.

Pakistan鈥檚 part-time duo of Saim Ayub and Salman Agha conceded a combined 66 runs in seven wicketless overs as West Indies cruised home.

鈥淵ou could say our fifth bowler gave away too many runs but in recent years, Salman Agha and Saim Ayub have both bowled well for us,鈥 Rizwan said after the match.

鈥淪aim didn鈥檛 have the best day today, but he performed well in the T20Is. That鈥檚 just part of the game.鈥

Rizwan said they could not read the conditions and several rain delays did not help their cause.

鈥淗onestly, the weather forecast has been completely different from expectations, and it鈥檚 hard to read.

鈥淲e鈥檙e keeping our options open and will finalize the XI after assessing the conditions.鈥

Pakistan had won the preceding Twenty20 series 2-1.

  • Pakistan won preceding T20 series 2-1, third and final match in ODI series is scheduled for Tuesday at the same stadium

TAROUBA, Trinidad and Tobago: Roston Chase and Justin Greaves led West Indies to a five-wicket victory over Pakistan with 10 balls to spare in the rain-reduced second one-day cricket international on Sunday, leveling the three-match series at 1-1.

Chase鈥檚 49 not out off 47 balls included two sixes and the winning boundary as West Indies scored 184-5 in 33.2 overs.

The hosts were chasing a revised target of 181 runs in 35 overs under the DLS method after multiple rain interruptions saw Pakistan鈥檚 innings end at 171-7 in 37 overs. Right-arm fast bowler Jayden Seales took 3-23 in seven overs.

West Indies stumbled from 101-3 after 18 overs at Brian Lara Stadium in Tarouba, Trinidad and Tobago, to 111-5 off 24 overs, including the wicket of Sherfane Rutherford, who hit a 33-ball 45 with three sixes and four fours.

Chase and Greaves (26 off 31) shared a 77-run unbroken partnership for the sixth wicket.

West Indies earlier chose to bowl first and Hasan Nawaz again played a key role for Pakistan with 36 not out off 30 deliveries, after his unbeaten 63 in the ODI opener.

Hasan鈥檚 knock on Sunday included three sixes 鈥 two of them in what turned out to be the last over of Pakistan鈥檚 innings after more rain. Hussain Talat got 31 off 32 balls but most Pakistan batters were much slower, including captain Mohammad Rizwan who was trapped lbw by Gudakesh Motie for a 38-ball 16.

Pakistan beat West Indies in the first one-day international on Friday, also by five wickets.

The third and final match in the ODI series is scheduled for Tuesday at the same stadium.

Pakistan won the preceding Twenty20 series 2-1 played in Florida.

Liverpool spend big to hold off Arsenal, City in Premier League title fight
  • Tributes to Jota will continue throughout the season with 鈥淔orever 20鈥 鈥 his shirt number, which the club have now retired 鈥 printed on Liverpool鈥檚 jerseys

LIVERPOOL: Liverpool have splashed out to defend their Premier League title as champions but face stiff competition from an Arsenal side desperate to shake off their tag as nearly men and a rejuvenated Manchester City.
After storming to a record-equalling 20th English top-flight title in Arne Slot鈥檚 first season in charge, Liverpool have looked to build from a position of strength during a summer marked by tragedy.
Portuguese forward Diogo Jota was killed in a car accident alongside his brother last month, plunging the club into mourning.
Tributes to Jota will continue throughout the season with 鈥淔orever 20鈥 鈥 his shirt number, which the club have now retired 鈥 printed on Liverpool鈥檚 jerseys.
The Reds have already spent 拢260 million ($350 million) on Florian Wirtz, Hugo Ekitike, Milos Kerkez and Jeremie Frimpong.
However, after the departures of Luis Diaz and Darwin Nunez, they are not yet done in strengthening their forward line and are expected to launch a fresh bid for Alexander Isak, with Newcastle demanding a British transfer record fee for the Swedish striker.
Liverpool鈥檚 rivals will hope Wirtz and Ekitike take time to adapt to the rigours of the Premier League after shining in Germany鈥檚 Bundesliga, while there are defensive doubts for Slot鈥檚 men to answer.
The Dutch coach said his side need to defend better after leaky performances in pre-season were followed by defeat in the Community Shield to Crystal Palace on Sunday after twice blowing the lead.
After finishing second for the past three seasons, Arsenal are longing for their first title in 22 years and have backed Mikel Arteta with another near 拢200 million investment in the transfer market.
Spanish international Martin Zubimendi will be the new anchor of the midfield, while the signings of Christian Norgaard, Cristhian Mosquera, Noni Madueke and Kepa Arrizabalaga add depth to the squad.
But Arsenal鈥檚 season is likely to be defined by whether Viktor Gyokeres proves to be the answer to their need for a prolific striker.
The Swede struck 97 times in 102 games during two years at Sporting Lisbon, but the 27-year-old failed to make a breakthrough in the Premier League during his previous experience in England.
After coming up short at Brighton, Gyokeres scored 41 goals in 121 games in England鈥檚 second tier with Coventry and Swansea.
鈥淗e鈥檚 a player that, when you leave him with the space one against one, he鈥檚 going to destroy you,鈥 said Arteta of his new striker.
City were dethroned last season after an unprecedented run of four consecutive titles as the wheels came off for Pep Guardiola鈥檚 men without Ballon d鈥橭r winner Rodri.
The Spaniard has been ruled out till September due to a setback in his return from a serious knee injury, but City have refreshed their squad with the additions of Rayan Ait-Nouri, Tijjani Reijnders and Rayan Cherki.
After a first trophyless season since 2016/17, City expect to be back in the fight for the title.
Chelsea were the last side other than City and Liverpool to lift the title back in 2017 and showed they are a coming force once more by winning the Club World Cup in the US last month.
The Blues finished fourth, 15 points behind Liverpool last season, but their transfer policy of investing heavily in scores of young prospects is beginning to bear fruit.
Joao Pedro made an instant impact with three goals in three games at the Club World Cup after a 拢55 million move from Brighton and could solve Chelsea鈥檚 need for a world class goalscorer.
Manchester United have transformed their forward line with the signings of Benjamin Sesko, Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo after finishing 15th last season.
Beating United in the Europa League final was not enough for Ange Postecoglou to keep his job as Tottenham manager and former Brentford boss Thomas Frank has taken over in north London.
Promoted trio Leeds, Sunderland and Burnley are aiming to avoid a worrying trend for the competitive balance.
For the past two seasons all three promoted clubs have gone straight back down as the gap between the riches of the Premier League and the second tier continues to grow.
