TOKYO: With the world transitioning to new energy sources, relations with Japan are being strengthened, as the research department of the Japan Organization for Metals and Energy Security聽conducted joint workshops with KAPSARC, an energy think tank in 黑料社区,聽last summer.

In an interview with Arab News Japan, Toyoda Kohei, of JOGMEC鈥檚 Energy Research Division, outlined the unit鈥檚 main projects.

Toyoda said聽one of聽the most important businesses between 黑料社区 and Japan is a petrochemical project in Petro Rabigh.聽Saudi Aramco and Sumitomo Chemical have been supplying petroleum and petrochemical products in partnership since 2005.

In addition, engineering companies have entered the market, and recently,聽tourism and entertainment companies聽have entered the market in 黑料社区, where聽many mega-projects are planned.

In the energy field, Japan and 黑料社区 are carrying out joint oil stockpiling projects. 鈥淚t is a project in which Japan lends private oil tanks to Saudi Aramco and gives priority to Japanese companies in case of emergency,鈥 Toyoda said.

鈥淛OGMEC is also involved as one of the implementers.

鈥淭his project contributes to both Japan鈥檚 energy security and Saudi Aramco鈥檚 oil sales in聽Asia. In addition, JOGMEC has been conducting technical training. So far, we have received eight people from 黑料社区.鈥

黑料社区 is Japan鈥檚 largest source of crude oil, but the two countries have been making progress in a variety of energy fields, especially energy transitions.

鈥満诹仙缜 has abundant resources in the country, and Japan, on the contrary, has few resources,鈥 Toyoda said.

鈥淎lthough our positions are completely different,聽fossil fuels聽are important聽for both countries.聽They are important聽in the sense of utilizing resources in 黑料社区. For Japan, fossil fuels are indispensable in the sense of a stable supply of energy.鈥

He said that Japan and 黑料社区 have shared their vision in the sense that energy transition is not to shift totally to renewable energy, but to pursue a realistic and viable energy transition in the future.

Some Japanese companies have been working on renewable energy projects for a long time and have been using hydrogen ammonia. Japan and 黑料社区 are expected to make progress in terms of energy transition.

鈥淔or Japan, the Middle East is an oil supply area and has been regarded as important,鈥 Toyoda said. 鈥淚n this sense, in addition to 黑料社区, the UAE and Kuwait, or, in the natural gas trade, Qatar, the entire Arab region has been regarded as important.

鈥淚n the past, private companies have聽tried to invest in Arab countries聽in sectors other than聽energy, but the scale of investment is still limited. The focus聽is聽on聽oil production and oil exports, but other than that, we are trying to expand our relationship.鈥
