RIYADH:聽Saudi聽Arabia鈥檚聽ACWA Power聽has聽signed a聽memorandum of聽understanding聽with聽Austrian聽electricity聽firm聽Verbund聽to potentially develop聽green hydrogen projects聽in the Middle East.聽
Verbund聽will use the hydrogen produced by the region鈥檚 projects as a renewable energy source for Central Europe, primarily Austria, as per the MOU.聽聽聽
鈥淭oday鈥檚 announcement is another illustration of our enduring commitment to bring ingenuity and entrepreneurship together to ensure power is generated reliably, responsibly, and sustainably at the global level,鈥澛燗CWA Power聽Chairman聽Mohammad聽Abunayyan聽said in a press statement.聽
The arrangement between聽Verbund聽and the Saudi聽developer, investor, and operator聽took place聽during聽the currently ongoing聽Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week.聽聽聽
Abunayyan聽added:聽鈥淚n collaboration with聽Verbund, we are excited to jointly explore the possibilities to deliver green hydrogen to Central Europe with a primary focus on Austria on a consistent basis.鈥澛
He said the move will not only support nations in their energy transition efforts, but also drive social development, industrial advancement, and economic growth across the region.聽
Since green hydrogen is聽created聽by electrolysis of water using聽solely聽renewable energy sources聽and has no carbon dioxide emissions, it stands as the cleanest and most聽efficient fuel聽globally and an impactful tool for addressing climate change.聽聽
Michael聽Strugl, the CEO of聽Verbund, noted that聽the聽Austrian聽firm is聽one of the largest producers of hydroelectricity in Europe.聽鈥淲ith our portfolio of renewable energy production, transportation of electricity and gas as well as energy trading and services,聽we cover the whole energy value chain. Green hydrogen is a logical next step.鈥澛犅
Although the collaboration between ACWA Power and Verbund has only just begun, the two parties said they are well-positioned to drive project progression quickly, partly due to ACWA Power鈥檚 ongoing green hydrogen activities and involvement.聽
For instance,聽ACWA Power鈥檚聽involvement in the NEOM Green Hydrogen Co.聽portrays the company鈥檚 capabilities to add a lot to the collaboration.聽聽
NGHC, which is聽a joint venture equally owned by聽ACWA Power, Air Products and NEOM, is聽working on聽the聽first at-scale green hydrogen project聽in the world.
Set to be complete by 2026, the scheme聽is expected to聽produce up to 600 tons per day of carbon-free green hydrogen聽in the form of green ammonia.聽This will聽be聽used聽as a聽low-cost聽substitute聽for聽current聽transportation聽methods.聽聽
