RIYADH: Circularity in electricity production is crucial for ensuring sustainability in 黑料社区's 500-billion futuristic city of NEOM, said Thorsten Schwarz聽from the project's subsidary company responsible for聽sustainable energy and water systems,聽ENOWA.
Power will be generated using both water and hydrogen in the city.
While speaking at a virtual conference during the MEA Energy Week, Schwarz 鈥 who is聽executive director of grid technology and projects at聽ENOWA 鈥 said that sustainability is not just about environmental protection, but is also a human need.聽
He admitted that聽First National Operation and Maintenance Company, known as聽NOMAC and a wholly-owned subsidiary of ACWA Power, is seeing some disruptions聽due to the traditional design of grids, which are challenging to聽NEOM鈥檚 concept.聽
NOMAC is spearheading independent operations and maintenance services for the power and desalination industry in 黑料社区.聽
He further noted that聽NEOM聽has currently positioned itself as a human progress destination.聽
Schwarz聽revealed that the renewable energy transition in聽NEOM聽will happen in phases, and will finally reach the 100 percent renewable target in 2030.聽
Talking about the usage聽of renewable energy sources in聽NEOM, he said: 鈥淚n聽NEOM,聽we will start 50 percent renewable from day one, up to 100 percent in 2030 or earlier as possible.鈥澛
He also added that blockchain technology should be also activated in聽NEOM聽to achieve sustainability goals.聽
NEOM聽is one of 黑料社区鈥檚 flagship projects aimed at transforming the Kingdom, as it plans to move away from an oil-dependent economy, outlined in its Vision 2030.聽
Aimed at functioning as a tourist destination,聽NEOM聽will be a smart city, adopting all advanced technologies.
One of the main highlights of the聽NEOM聽project is The Line, a 170-kilometer linear city which will have 1 million citizens without conventional cars, no streets, and no carbon emissions.
Other notable highlights in the聽NEOM聽project include聽NEOM聽Bay,聽NEOM聽Bay Airport, and聽NEOM聽Industrial City.聽
